THE DAWSON FAMILY
OF
MARYLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, VIRGINIA AND ELSEWHERE
GENERATION ONE
1. John Dawson.
Although John Dawson may have been born in England, neither the date of his birth, nor the actual place where he was born, have been satisfactorily determined. He is known to have immigrated into the Province of Maryland at an early date, possibly by about 1670, or shortly before. Sometime after his arrival, John settled in Charles County, where he had applied for and received a land grant. John, who was styled planter, is thought to have married soon after arriving in Maryland to a woman named Rebecca Doyne. Rebecca was the daughter of John Doyne. Family tradition, as stated by at least one researcher, suggests that John and Rebecca met aboard ship during their voyage to America, but that initially there were objections to their getting married because of differences in their religious beliefs. John, it appears, belonged to the Church of England, while Rebecca, a native of Ireland, was a Roman Catholic.
Although John and Rebecca are reputed by some researchers to have had seven children, only the five that are listed below have been identified as known, or very probable. Their exact order of birth is not known, however. John and Rebecca both died in Maryland.

Edward and Mary resided in that part of Prince George's County, Maryland that was later formed into Frederick County in 1748. According to available deed records, Edward owned a plantation called "Dawson's Mill Land," which consisted of 214 acres.
On 19 October 1731, Edward and his son, Edward, Jr., leased land to a man named William Young for a period of ten years. During the following year, 1732, Edward died in Prince George's County. His will, which was written on 15 December 1729, was admitted by the Prince George's County Court for probate on 28 June 1732. He left his plantation to his son, Edward.

4. Nicholas Dawson.
Nicholas Dawson, the son of John and Rebecca (Doyne) Dawson, is believed to have been born in Charles County, Maryland. He was later married to his cousin, Mary Doyne, the daughter of Robert Doyne and Mary Stone in about 1704. Nicholas and Mary were married at "Fendall's Delight," a plantation in Charles County which had been acquired by Mary's father shortly before his death in 1689. Mary, who was also a native of Charles County, had been born there in about 1682/83. Mary's mother, Mary Stone, was the daughter of William Stone, the first Protestant governor of Maryland.
After their marriage, Nicholas and Mary lived for a short time at "Fendall's Delight," but in 1710 they sold their interest in it, and in an adjoining plantation named "Lyon's Denn," to William and Sarah (Doyne) Hutchinson. Sarah was Mary's older sister. They subsequently moved to a plantation called "Saturday's Work," where they appear to have resided for the remainder of their lives. "Saturday's Work" had been acquired by Mary's father in 1688, and was situated in that part of Charles County that eventually was made a part of Prince George's County.
It is interesting to note that when "Saturday's Work" was first granted, the Lord Proprietor offered those wishing to settle in Maryland all the land they could ride around in one day. James Bodkin, the original grantee, acquired this plantation in that manner on a Saturday, and hence the name "Saturday's Work." This land was situated approximately six miles south of present-day Washington, D.C.
Aside from "Saturday's Work," "Fendall's Delight," and "Lyon's Denn," Mary also inherited several other plantations from her father which she later left by will to her children. These were "Constant Friendship" along the Bush River in Baltimore County, "Spring Banks" in Somerset County, and "Sligo" in Prince George's County. In addition, Nicholas and Mary petitioned the proprietary government for the right to take up lands for which warrants had previously been issued to Robert Doyne, but which he had not executed.
As a result of their petition, Nicholas and Mary were allowed to claim 2,000 acres "in any part of the Province not formerly laid out nor cultivated by any person, nor reserved for the use of his Lordship." Although a portion of this acreage was taken up near Port Tobacco in Charles County, it appears to have been sold shortly thereafter. The remainder was not taken up during Nicholas Dawson's lifetime, but was eventually acquired by his eldest son, John.
Nicholas Dawson died in 1727 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Although Nicholas does not appear to have left a will, an inventory of his estate was filed in the Upper Marlboro Courthouse on 22 August 1728. Mary Doyne, on the other hand, died in 1734 in Prince George's County. Her Last Will & Testament, which had been written on 14 December 1734, was probated on 24 January 1734/35. Nicholas and Mary are believed to have both been buried on their home plantation, "Saturday's Work."

Mary Dawson, the daughter of Edward and Mary Dawson, was born in Charles County, Maryland. Mary was evidently married twice during her life. She married her first husband, John Cash, in Prince George's County, Maryland. John died in Prince George's County in 1726. His will, which had been written on 28 August 1726, was subsequently probated before the Prince George's County Court on 26 September 1726. In his will, John left his dwelling plantation to his son, Caleb, and another plantation called "Huckleberry Hill" to his sons, Dawson and John. This second plantation was situated along the East Branch of the Potomac River.
After John passed away, Mary married for a second time, also in Prince George's County, to a man named Alexander Fraser in December of 1727. There are no known issue from Mary's second marriage.

11. John Dawson.
John Dawson, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Doyne) Dawson, was born in 1706 in Charles County, Maryland. He was later married to Martha Ann Marbury, the daughter of Francis Marbury and his second wife, Frances Herd. Although no record of this marriage has been found, it is believed to have taken place in about 1734 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Martha, who was also a native of Maryland, had been born there on 11 September 1715.
John died in 1764 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Although it appears that John did not leave a will, an inventory of his estate was undertaken on 23 April 1764 by Robert Wade and Richard Edelen. This inventory was subsequently acknowledged to be a "true and perfect inventory" by his widow, Martha, on 17 June 1764.
Martha survived John by more than thirty years. She died on 28 January 1795 in Frederick County, Maryland, and was buried in the Mount Olivet Episcopal Cemetery at Frederick in Frederick County.

12. Thomas Dawson.
Thomas Dawson, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Doyne) Dawson, was born in 1708 in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was later married in Maryland to a woman named Elizabeth Hawkins Lowe. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it is believed to have taken place in about 1740 in Prince George's County. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Lowe and Mary Hawkins, and a sister of the Eleanor Ann Lowe who married Thomas' brother, George.
In about 1753, Thomas and Elizabeth moved to that part of Frederick County, Maryland that was subsequently formed into Montgomery County, Maryland in 1776. It was here that he founded the village of Dawsonville, and where he resided for the remainder of his life. Thomas died in Montgomery County in 1800. His will, which had been written on 6 January 1794, was admitted for probate before the Montgomery County Court on 2 October 1800. The following children were named in Thomas Dawson's will.

13. William Dawson.
William Dawson, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Doyne) Dawson, is thought to have been born in about 1710/12 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Shortly before his mother passed away in 1734, William appears to have married in Prince George's County to a woman named Elizabeth Marbury. Elizabeth was the daughter of Francis Marbury and his first wife, Mary Greene. Elizabeth was also a native of Prince George's County, Maryland.
Although William had inherited a one-half interest in the Somerset County plantation called "Spring Banks," there is no evidence to indicate that he ever resided there. Instead, it is believed that he remained in Prince George's County until his death in 1756. Unfortunately, no will has been found for William, suggesting that he probably died intestate. An inventory and appraisement of his estate was filed, however, and bond was given, on 14 October 1756 by John Dawson, John Harris, Jr., and Andrew Hilton.
Because of a lack of available records, especially a will, the number and names of all of William and Elizabeth's children are not known for sure. The children listed below are believed to be theirs, or probably theirs, based upon information presented by various researchers. There may have been others, however.

14. George Dawson.
George Dawson, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Doyne) Dawson, was born in about 1716 in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was later married in Maryland to a woman named Eleanor Ann Lowe. Although no record of their marriage has been found, it is believed to have taken place in about 1740 in Prince George's County. Eleanor was the daughter of John Lowe and Mary Hawkins, and a sister of the Elizabeth Lowe that married George's brother, Thomas.
George inherited from his mother a plantation in Somerset County, Maryland named "Spring Banks." He later acquired two other properties in Prince George's County, namely "Mitchell's Choice" and "Addition to Golden Rod." George and Eleanor resided in that portion of Prince George's County that was latter formed into Frederick County, Maryland in 1748.
In about 1770, George and Eleanor moved to western Pennsylvania, settling in that portion of Bedford County that was later formed into Westmoreland County. They resided near the community of Uniontown in what is today Fayette County, Pennsylvania. George died in 1783 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. His will, which had been written on 8 July 1778, was subsequently admitted for probate before the Westmoreland County Court on 9 June 1783.

50. William Dawson.
William Dawson, the son of William and Elizabeth (Marbury) Dawson, was born in 1738 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Although William apparently remained in Prince George's County until shortly after his father passed away in 1756, he eventually joined two of his uncles, Thomas and George Dawson, who had previously moved into Frederick County, Maryland. In 1760, William purchased a plantation in Frederick County called "Well Wishes." This plantation was later sold to a man named Robert Rose on 3 February 1769.
William is believed to have married his wife, Elizabeth Melott, in Frederick County, Maryland in about 1763. Elizabeth, who was born in Frederick County, was the daughter of Theodorus Melott and Catherine De La Chaumette. In about 1769/70, William and Elizabeth moved to Pennsylvania, where they settled in Spring Hill Township in that portion of Cumberland County that later became Bedford County in 1771, then Westmoreland County in 1773, but is now part of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. William's name is shown on the list of taxable inhabitants of Westmoreland County as residing in Spring Hill Township in 1773, and in Franklin Township in 1783. He apparently paid taxes in 1783 on 80 acres of land and a small amount of livestock.
In about 1787/88, William and his family appear to have moved back to Maryland, however, where they settled just west of Cumberland in Allegany County. Although many of the pre-1800 Allegany County records have been destroyed, one document that was found that pertains to William was a property deed dated 13 August 1801. This deed indicates that William purchased one half of a plantation called "Hawkin's Clover Bottom" from his brother, James Dawson, Sr. This land was subsequently left by will to his sons, William and Benjamin. On 21 November 1801, another son, James, purchased the other half of "Clover Bottom."
William died in Allegany County, Maryland in 1802. His will, which was written on 11 June 1802, was probated on 21 July 1802.
