INTRODUCTION
Although it has yet to be proven beyond any doubt, I believe there is a strong probability that our particular Bond/Bonde/Band/Bande family traces back to the Walter Bonde who wrote his last will and testament on 12 March 1573, and who identified himself in his will as being "of Lacoke in the contie of Wilts, Miller..." Because Laycock was such a small village in the 1500's, and since I have been unable to find any other unconnected Bond families residing at Laycock during this time period, I cannot help but believe there is a connection between our Walter Bond, father of Edward, and the Walter Bond (Bonde) who wrote his will in 1573. The timing is right, the location is right, and the generational fit looks good for there to be a relationship.
Although it would be great if there were additional information available, other than the 1573 will, to support this line of descent, it can only be hoped that future research will verify this relationship. In light of all of the research I have done on this family, and until additional evidence convinces me otherwise, I have opted to include the Walter Bond (Bonde) who wrote his will on 12 March 1573 as being the earliest known progenitor of our Bond/Bonde/Band/Bande family in England and America.
DATES AND ABBREVIATIONS
DATES
When reading numerical Quaker dates from Meetings in the American colonies prior to 1752, it must be remembered that the calendar in use at that time by the Quakers was the Old Style, or Julian Calendar, which began the year in the month of March, not January. As a consequence, numerical dates found in most Quaker records are two months off of our currently used New Style, or Gregorian Calendar, which was adopted in America in 1752. For example, a numerical date which may have been written as the 4th day, 6th month, 1734 should be interpreted as 4 August 1734 under our current calendar, not 4 June 1734.
A similar situation exists with the use of double dates such as 20 January 1742/1743. Under the Old Style Calendar the date would be read as the 20th day of January (the 11th month), 1742, and under the New Style Calendar as 20 January 1743. Although the New Style Calendar was not officially adopted in America until 1752, there was some use of it prior to that time.

THE BOND FAMILY OF ENGLAND AND AMERICA
GENERATION ONE
1. Walter Bond.
Although it has not been proven beyond doubt, I believe Walter Bond (also written Bonde, Band, and Bande) to be the earliest progenitor of our Bond family to have been discovered to date. He was a resident of Laycock (or Lacock) in Wiltshire, England during the 1500's. His wife’s name, as determined from his will, was Johan (also written Joan and Jone). Unfortunately, neither Johan’s maiden name, nor her parentage, are known at this time.
Although Walter apparently died at Laycock in Wiltshire, England, the actual date of his death has not been determined. It is known, however, that he was a miller by trade, and that he was living at Laycock when he wrote his will on 12 March 1573. In his will, he names his wife, Johan, his two sons, John and Thomas, and six grandsons. No daughters were mentioned.

On 17 January 1607, Edward was married at Laycock in Wiltshire to his first wife, Alice Shewringe, the daughter of John and Margaret Shewringe (also written Shuringe).. Alice, later died at Laycock in 1624, and was buried there on 24 October 1624.
In about 1625, Edward appears to have married for a second time to a woman whose identity has yet to be determined. Edward, who is described in the Laycock Parish records as being "of ye Common," died at Laycock in 1659. He was subsequently buried there on 19 February 1659.

Ann, who was born on the 5th day of the 12th month, 1666 at Slaughterford, was the daughter of John Paradise and his wife, Susannah.
Ann Paradise passed away during the 8th month, 1704 at Devizes in Wiltshire, just six days after the birth of her son, Joseph. She apparently died due to complications associated with childbirth. Ann was buried on the 12th day of the 8th month, 1704.
Benjamin Bond and his family were Quakers, and the below letter, written by Benjamin, was found in the minutes of the Chester Monthly Meeting of Friends in Pennsylvania. It was written on behalf of his son, John.

Sarah, who was born in 1702 in that part of Philadelphia County which later became Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of John Cadwalader (also written Cadwallader) and Mary Cassel. Their intentions to marry were declared a second time at the Abington Monthly Meeting on the 22nd day, 12th month, 1724, and on the 29th day, 1st month, 1725 (29 March 1725) their marriage was reported orderly.
Sometime after their marriage, John and Sarah became united with the Richland Monthly Meeting located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and it is in the minutes of this Meeting that the birth dates of all but one of their children are found registered. On the 21st day of the 8th month, 1731, John was granted a certificate to "visit his friends in Old England," and in the 6th month of the following year he returned to Pennsylvania. John Bond passed away in Pennsylvania in 1747. He was an Elder of the Byberry Monthly Meeting in Philadelphia County at the time. Sarah, on the other hand, died in 1756.

During the Spring of 1779, Edward and Mary moved to Frederick County, Virginia, where they were subsequently united with the Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Friends on 3 May 1779. Although their membership was at Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Frederick County, Edward and Mary actually settled in an area that was later to become part of present day Shenandoah County. Shortly after joining the Hopewell Meeting, Edward and his family became members of the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting which had been established in Shenandoah County as an offshoot of Hopewell. In the minutes of this Meeting were found references to three of their children having been married at the Smith's Creek Meeting House in Shenandoah County.
On 4 July 1789, Edward and Mary, along with four of their children, were endorsed by Crooked Run to join the South River Monthly Meeting of Friends in Bedford County, Virginia. They were subsequently received at the South River Meeting on 21 November 1789. Three of their other children were received at a later date. Sometime later, Edward and his family were united with the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting, also in Bedford County. On 4 November 1797, Edward and Mary were granted a certificate to join the Westfield Monthly Meeting in Surry County, North Carolina, where they were subsequently received on 24 March 1798.
Edward and Mary remained in Surry County, North Carolina for about three years, returning to Virginia in 1801. For the next eleven years, the family appears to have resided in Grayson County, Virginia, where they were members of the Mount Pleasant Monthly Meeting of Friends. Edward and Mary were later given a certificate to join the Fairfield Monthly Meeting on 28 November 1812. This meeting was located near Leesburg in Highland County, Ohio. After arriving in Ohio, references pertaining to Edward and Mary are found in the minutes of several monthly meetings. A few of these are shown below.

51. Mary Bond.
Mary Bond, the daughter of John Bond and Sarah Cadwalader, was born on the 8th day of the 7th month, 1741 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. No additional information has been found concerning this individual.
52. Isaac Bond.
Isaac Bond, the son of John Bond and Sarah Cadwalader, was born in Pennsylvania in about 1744/45. Because he was not listed with John and Sarahs other children in the records of the Richland Monthly Meeting of Friends in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, it is assumed that he was probably born at about the time John and Sarah joined the Abington Monthly Meeting of Friends in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
Isaac was married twice during his life. He married his first wife, Jane Williams, at the Abington Monthly Meeting on 12 May 1769. Even though Isaac and Jane remained in Pennsylvania for about ten years after their marriage, they eventually moved to Virginia, where they joined two of Isaacs siblings in Shenandoah County. Although Isaac and Jane originally joined the Hopewell Monthly Meeting of Friends in Frederick County, Virginia on 1 January 1781, they soon transferred their membership to the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting of Friends, which had been established in Shenandoah County as an offshoot of the Hopewell Meeting. Jane subsequently died in Shenandoah County, Virginia. She was the mother of two children by Isaac.
After his first wife passed away, Isaac married for a second time to a woman named Lydia Allen on 14 June 1787 at the Smiths Creek Meeting House in Shenandoah County. Lydia, who had been born on 17 October 1762 in Frederick County, Virginia, was the daughter of Jackson Allen and Betty Davis. After residing in Shenandoah County for approximately fourteen years, Isaac and Lydia were given a certificate dated 4 April 1801 to join the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends in Bedford County, Virginia. Isaac subsequently died in Bedford County on 12 July 1823.

Edward Bond, the son of Joseph Bond and Martha Rogers, was born on 26 September 1740 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. As a young man, Edward moved to North Carolina, where he was received into membership on 28 April 1759 at the New Garden Monthly Meeting of Friends in Rowan County (now within Guilford County, North Carolina). He was later married on 16 August 1764 to a woman named Ann Mills at the New Garden Monthly Meeting of Friends. Ann, who had been born in Frederick County, Virginia on 7 May 1745, was the daughter of John Mills and Sarah Beals (also written Beales).
Edward and Ann left North Carolina on 18 September 1810 to settle in the Whitewater country of the Indiana Territory. They arrived on 27 October 1810, settling in that portion of Clark County, Indiana that was later formed into Wayne County, Indiana in 1811. Their son, Joseph, and his wife accompanied them on the journey. Edward subsequently died in Wayne County, Indiana on 6 May 1821, while Ann died there on 3 April 1826.

59. John Bond.
John Bond, the son of Joseph Bond and Martha Rogers, was born on 30 May 1755 in Rowan County, North Carolina. John was apparently married twice during his life. He married first to a woman named Jane Beeson on 28 January 1778 at the Center Monthly Meeting of Friends in Guilford County, North Carolina. Jane, who was also a native of Rowan County, North Carolina, had been born on 22 March 1760. She was the daughter of Benjamin Beeson and Elizabeth Hunter. Jane died in Guilford County, North Carolina on 9 January 1792.
After his first wife passed away, John married for a second time, also in North Carolina, to a woman named Elizabeth Beeson. Elizabeth is believed to have been a cousin of his first wife, Jane. She was the daughter of William Beeson and Elizabeth Norton. About three years after their marriage, John and Elizabeth appear to have left North Carolina and moved west into Tennessee.
John died in 1795 in Knox County, Tennessee. His will, which had been written on 17 June 1795, was probated before the Knox County Court during the September 1795 term. Whatever became of Johns second wife has not been determined.

Sometime after their marriage, Jesse and Ann moved to Ontario, Canada, where they settled in Crowland Township in Welland County. It appears that soon after their arrival in Canada, the Yocum name began to be spelled as Yokom. Hannah Bond, the daughter of John Bond, II and Margaret Allen, was born in Pennsylvania. She was later married to a man named John O'Neal in Shenandoah County, Virginia by a marriage bond that was dated 9 August 1801. John was a widower at the time of his marriage to Hannah, having previously been married to a woman named Rebecca Rambo. He was the son of Robert and Eleanor O’Neal.
Although John O'Neal appears to have been
dismissed from the Quaker Church, the records of the Crooked Creek Monthly
Meeting in Shenandoah County
indicate that on 5 October 1818 Hannah and three children were given a
certificate to join the Plainfield Monthly Meeting in Belmont County, Ohio. They were subsequently received into membership in the Plainfield

He was the father of eight children from a previous marriage to a woman named Barbara Bly.
After their marriage, Philip and Rebecca appear to have remained in Shenandoah County, Virginia, where Rebecca is believed to have subsequently died. Sometime after Rebeccas death, Philip moved to Rockingham County, Virginia. Available pension documents indicate that Philip, while residing in Rockingham County, was granted a pension on 15 October 1832 for his service in the Revolutionary War. Philip died in Virginia in 1841 at the age of one hundred and three.

85. Sarah Bond.
Sarah Bond, the daughter of Edward Bond and Mary Fox, was born in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on 5 October 1767. As a young girl, Sarah accompanied her parents on their move to Virginia, where they settled in what is today Shenandoah County. She was later married in a Quaker ceremony at the Smith's Creek Meeting House in Shenandoah County to a man named Jackson Allen on 10 April 1788. Jackson, who had been born near Mt. Jackson in Frederick County, Virginia (now Shenandoah County, Virginia) on 10 October 1764, was the son of Joseph Allen and Ruth White.
In 1794, Jackson and Sarah moved into Bedford County, Virginia, where Sarah's parents had settled earlier. They apparently returned to Shenandoah County a few years later, however, as Jackson's father deeded 100 acres of land to him there in 1802. These lands were subsequently sold in 1807 to Samuel Walton.
On 9 May 1811, Jackson and Sarah, along with a number of their children, were endorsed by the Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Virginia to join the Miami Monthly Meeting in Ohio. Their eldest son, Edward, had apparently moved to Ohio sometime prior to this, as he was married there in 1810, a year before the rest of the family were endorsed. After they arrived in Ohio, they settled in Greene County. Shortly thereafter, however, they were endorsed to join the Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting, which was located just over the county line in Clinton County, Ohio. In 1826, after the Quakers split into two factions (Orthodox and Hicksite), Jackson and Sarah were listed as two of the original members of the Greenplain Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) in Clark County, Ohio.
It appears that Jackson and Sarah remained in Ohio for over thirty years before moved west into Parke County, Indiana to be near their son, Solomon, and their daughter, Mary. This last move evidently took place in 1842, as on 14 September 1842 they were given a certificate by the Greenplain Monthly Meeting to join the Bloomfield Monthly Meeting in Parke County. Jackson Allen passed away in Parke County, Indiana on 18 June 1846, while Sarah died there on 9 May 1851. Although Jackson was subsequently buried in the Coloma Friends Cemetery in Parke County, it is not known at this time where Sarah was buried.

She was later married at the South River Monthly Meeting of Friends in Bedford County, Virginia to a man named Daniel McPherson on 20 June 1793. During the following year, 1794, Mary and Daniel joined the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, also in Bedford County. This Meeting had been formed in 1794 as an offshoot of the South River Meeting.
On 4 June 1803, Mary and Daniel were given a certificate from Goose Creek to join the Mount Pleasant Monthly Meeting of Friends in Grayson County, Virginia. They appear to have remained in Grayson County for about eleven years, at which time they moved to Highland County, Ohio. According to the records of the Mount Pleasant Monthly Meeting of Friends, Mary and Daniel, and several of their children, were given a certificate on 27 August 1814 to join the Fairfield Monthly Meeting of Friends near Leesburg in Highland County. They were subsequently received at the Fairfield Monthly Meeting of Friends on 26 November 1814.
Daniel died in Highland County, Ohio on 3 March 1832. He was subsequently buried in the Lee's Creek Friends Cemetery. Mary, on the other hand, died in Highland County on 8 December 1853 and was buried in the Fairfield Friends Cemetery.
