THE

BENSON FAMILY

OF

IRELAND AND THE UNITED STATES

GENERATION ONE

1. James Benson.

James Benson is thought to have been born in about 1730 in County Tyrone, Ireland. And, if the information contained in the below excerpt can be assumed to be accurate, it would appear that James arrived in South Carolina during the mid-1740's, eventually settling in what is now Union County. James was married in South Carolina to Martha Quinn, but unfortunately no record of this marriage has been found. James and Martha resided in South Carolina for the remainder of their lives. Martha is believed to have died in Union County prior to 1799, while James died there in 1801. His will, which was written on 20 April 1799, was subsequently probated before the Union County Court on 17 April 1801.

The following excerpt was taken from "Copeland, Bostick, Patton, and Allied Families."

"James and Martha Quinn Benson were both born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.  James Benson's great grandson, Dr. Henry Clark Benson, a Methodist Minister, wrote an autobiographical sketch some years ago in which he gave considerable information
about the early Benson family. Dr. Benson wrote that the Benson family was of English descent, though residents of Ireland. James Benson, born about 1730, attempted to go to America when about twelve years of age because he could not get along with his stepmother. He packed a few clothes, went to Belfast, and booked passage to Richmond, Virginia where his uncle resided. He hoped that his uncle would pay for his passage to America. Young James decided to remain in Ireland, however, and did not attempt to make the trip until about two years later. His ship, instead of going to Virginia, went instead to Charleston, South Carolina, and there James was taken over by a man who paid for the passage to America in exchange for James' labor on his farm. James Benson lived in Union District, South Carolina, where he eventually married and where he became quite prosperous.

"Dr. Benson told an amusing incident about his great grandfather, James Benson, which occurred during the Revolutionary War. James Benson was a Quaker and refused to fight.  He sided with the British, however, and vowed not to shave off his beard until King George had conquered the rebels. A colonel with a regiment of American soldiers was passing through the neighborhood where James lived, and the colonel, hearing about James, the "rank Tory," sent for a barber who shaved James, taking almost a half of bushel of hair off his face. Strangely enough, James Benson's sons fought on the side of the Americans."

In the above excerpt, Dr. Benson mentions that during the Revolutionary War, James Benson's "sons" fought on the side of the Americans. He subsequently identifies these sons as John, William, Henry, and James. Although James and Martha (Quinn) Benson may very well have had four sons, James Benson, Jr. is the only son named in his father's will. He is also the only male child of James and Martha Benson's to have been uncovered to date. Aside from the above autobiographical sketch, no information has been found to substantiate that James and Martha had other sons.

GENERATION TWO

NOTE: Only the author's pedigree ancestor and known siblings are covered in this generation.

2. Mary Benson.

Mary Benson, the daughter of James Benson and Martha Quinn, was born in about 1753 in the State of South Carolina. She was later married in about 1772 to a man named Jonathan Frost in Ninety-Six District, South Carolina. Jonathan was the son of John and Mary Frost.

Mary's husband, Jonathan, is believed to be the Jonathan Frost who died in Ninety-Six District in 1783. Although no will was uncovered in the Ninety-Six District probate records, this individual’s estate was administrated on 11 September 1783, and an inventory was carried out on 15 September 1783. Mary, on the other hand, died in Union County, South Carolina during the month of December 1796. Her will, which was written on 25 December 1796, was admitted for probate on 2 January 1797. The below children were named in Mary's will.

NOTE: In Mary’s will, she referred to her "four youngest children" as being Barnett, Elizabeth, Rachel, and William. Unfortunately, it is not known at this time whether these children were fathered by Jonathan Frost, or if they were born out of wedlock after Jonathan’s death. One reason for not believing they were Jonathan Frost’s children revolves around the fact that Mary specifically gives the full name, either birth or married, for the four children known to have been her’s and Jonathan’s, but does not give any surname to her four youngest children. In addition, in the will of Mary’s father, James Benson, he only refers to his "four" grandchildren, those known to be Mary and Jonathan’s. Because Mary’s youngest children may not have carried the Frost surname is one reason that no information has been found concerning any of them. Regardless of who the father is, the eight children listed below are known to be Mary’s, and are therefore included in this genealogy.

Sarah Benson, the daughter of James Benson and Martha Quinn, was born in the State of South Carolina. She was later married in South Carolina to a man named Alexander Brown. Sarah and Alexander eventually moved to Ohio.

In a deed, which was dated 19 October 1821, Sarah, a legatee of her father, James Benson, and James Brown and his wife, Sarah, Robert Brown and his wife, Hannah, Anna Goens (Goings), Elizabeth Brown, and Polly Brown, sold 100 acres of land along the Tyger River in Union County, South Carolina to William Brown and his wife, Polly. William subsequently resold this land to Theophilus Penny. In a later deed that was dated 29 September 1829, Alexander and Sarah sold 39.66 acres of land to Israel Thompson for $100. Their son, James, subsequently sold the adjoining 39.66 acres of land to Mr. Thompson on 23 December 1829.

4. James Benson.

James Benson, the son of James Benson, Sr. and Martha Quinn, is thought to have been born in about 1759/60 in the State of South Carolina. During the Revolutionary War, James served as a horseman in Colonel Thomas Brandon's Regiment, and during the years 1781 and 1783, he also supplied provisions and forage to the American forces.

After the War, James married Elizabeth Clark, and from this union ten children were born. Elizabeth, who was born on 20 June 1767 in York County, Pennsylvania, was the daughter of John Clark and Mary Campbell. Although the actual date of their marriage has not been determined, it is believed to have taken place around 1783. This date is primarily based upon the stated age of their eldest son, William, when he died in 1847.

Although James may have been associated with the Quakers prior to his marriage, the earliest Quaker record that has been found which pertains to him was in the minutes of the Bush River Monthly Meeting of Friends in Newberry County, South Carolina. It was dated 26 April 1788, and stated that he was "received by request."

James and Elizabeth were later united with the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, however, in what is now Union County, South Carolina. In the minutes of this Meeting, dated 24 August 1805, was found the following: "James Benson and family given certificate to Miami Monthly Meeting, Ohio." Like many of the Quakers living in the Carolinas and Virginia, James and Elizabeth moved to Ohio after it had become a state in 1803. One of the main drawing points of Ohio was that it had been granted statehood as a "free state," and many southern Quakers were anti-slavery. Whether the Benson's were anti-slavery Quakers, or whether they were simply looking to settle on new land, is not known, however.

The Benson's were subsequently received at the Miami Monthly Meeting on 14 November 1805, and soon took up land along the Little Miami River in Greene County. In 1810 a new meeting was established as an offshoot of the Miami Monthly Meeting. It was called Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting, and was located just over the line in what is now Clinton County, Ohio. The minutes of the Caesar's Creek Monthly Meeting show that three of James and Elizabeth's children were married there. The Benson's were listed in the Ohio census records as living in Sugar Creek Township in Greene County, and it appears that they remained there until James' death in 1829, or early 1830.

Prior to his death, James deeded nearly all of his land holdings to his children. They in turn deeded these lands to John Benson after James' death. John Benson was the youngest child of James and Elizabeth, and most of the older children had already moved to Indiana. On 27 January 1831, James' widow, Elizabeth, was granted a certificate to the Cherry Grove Monthly Meeting at Lynn in Randolph County, Indiana to be near several of her children who had previously moved there. She remained there until her death on 31 January 1844. Elizabeth was buried at Lynn.

He was later married in Warren County, Ohio on 14 January 1808 to a woman named Mary Stewart (also written Mary Stuart). Mary, who was a native of North Carolina, was calculated to have been born there in 1790. She was the daughter of Robert Stewart and Ann Hornaday.

Although William and Mary Benson resided in Ohio for a number of years, they eventually moved to Randolph County, Indiana, and then later moved on to Warren County, Indiana. William died in Warren County, Indiana on 2 August 1847. He was subsequently buried in the Union Cemetery in John Q. Adams Township in Warren County.

Edward, who was the eldest son of Jackson Allen and Sarah Bond, was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia on 25 September 1790.

Although Edward and Mary were both Quakers, they eventually left that faith and joined the Methodist Church. Two years after their marriage, Edward was drafted and served in the War of 1812 as a private in the 1st Regiment of the Ohio Militia (4th Brigade, 1st Division). Because of this service, he received a warrant for 40 acres of land.

In 1829, Edward and Mary moved into western Indiana, where they settled in Warren County. Mary Benson died in Warren County on 27 September 1843 after a lingering illness. After Mary passed away, Edward married for a second time to a woman named Nancy Alexander on 29 March 1844 in Warren County. Shortly thereafter, Edward and Nancy moved to Wisconsin to be closer to some of his children. According to available census records, Edward and Nancy were residing in Jefferson Township in Green County, Wisconsin in 1850.

Several years later, Edward, along with his 16 year old grandson who was also named Edward, made a visit to Indiana. On the way home he came down with cholera and died in the vicinity of Elgin in Cook County, Illinois. This was in the year 1855. Whatever became of his widow, Nancy, has not been determined.

He was later married in Greene County, Ohio to a woman named Elizabeth Ann Wilson on 11 November 1824. Elizabeth, who was a native of Ohio, was calculated to have been born there in 1805.

Clark and Elizabeth eventually moved to Indiana, where they settled in Warren County. They later purchased 80 acres of land in Warren County from Samuel B. Clark for $ 200 on 4 October 1830. Clark died in Warren County on 22 February 1857, while Elizabeth died there on 22 July 1872. Clark's will, which was written on 8 July 1854, was submitted for probate on 2 March 1857. Both Clark and Elizabeth were buried in the Union Cemetery in John Q. Adams Township in Warren County.

The three children listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from available pre-1850 census records. These are also believed to be Clark and Elizabeth's children, but have not been positively identified as yet. Because they were not named in Clark's will, however, it is believed that they probably died at an early age.
