General Notes:
Per son William's 1880 bio, John was born, raised and married in Pennsylvania. He came to Pleasant Hill in 1840 where he established a general store. Eventually he sold this store and relocated to Covington, OH where he went into partnership with John Mikesell and Col. J.C. Ullery. The store operated until 1860 when John moved back to Pleasant Hill. He again operated a general store there until he retired in 1873.
This bio states there were eleven children in this family. I have only documented ten.
1850 US Census the family is listed as John WHITMORE in Newton Twp., Miami Co. Living w/John at age 29 is wife Sarah 30, Sarah 14, Ellen 7, Washington 5. John 3, and Lewis 3/12. John's occupation is merchant.
1870 US Census, page 19 of Newton Township, Miami County, OH shows John 59 years old, was born in Pennsylvania, worked as a farmer with property worth $5050. He was living with his wife, Sarah and children Ellen 28, Lewis 19, Maggie 17, William 19. Charles 13, Mary 10 and Martha 8, in Newton Township, Miami County, OH.
1880 US Census shows John in Pleasant Hill at age 69 and serving as Justice of the Peace. He was living w/wife Sarah 61, Mary 20, Charles 23, Martha 18, granddaughter Lora 9, John W. 33 and John's wife Francis B. 25.
From 1880 History of Miami County Ohio:
A.F.& A.M.-Pleasant Hill Lodge, No. 361, received its charter from the Grand Lodge of Ohio the 17th October, 1866. The charter was signed by Thomas Sparrow, of Toledo, Ohio, as Most Worshipful Grand Master, and John D. Caldwell as Right Worshipful Grand Secretary. The following were the charter members: Joseph Marlin, Thomas H. Coate, Nathaniel Hill, Matthias D. Myers, John Whitmer, William Furnas, Jacob Reiber, Joseph Coppock, Joseph Cox, H. J. Byrkett, Jacob K. Teeter, William Anderson and Amos E. Duncan, four of whom are. members in good standing at present.
John married Elizabeth Stewart in 1836 in PA. (Elizabeth Stewart died on 4 Apr 1837.)
John next married Sarah Lenhart, daughter of John Lenhart and Sarah Unknown, in 1840 in PA. (Sarah Lenhart was born in 1819 in Pennsylvania, died on 1 Dec 1905 and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.)
