wellsgladden                                             John Wells and Mary Polly Gladden

John was born about 1785 and died Sept 25,1841 Whitley County, Kentucky.  He married Mary Polly Gladden.  She was born about 1780 North Carolina and died Mar 6,1852 Whitley County, Kentucky.  They are buried at Sutton Cemetery, Whitley County, Kentucky.  They had nine children.
I.      
Martin was born about 1802.
II.      Delila was born about 1803.
III.     Abner was born July 16, 1804.
IV.     Charlotte was born about 1805.
V.       Susan was born Mar 17, 1806.
VI.     Joseph was born July 1, 1810 and died Nov 29, 1829 Knox County, Kentucky.  He was buried at Skinner Cemetery, Whitley County, Kentucky.
VII.    Caroline was born about 1814.  She married Robert Rockhold Sept 2, 1832.  They had one child.
           A.  Louisa was born Dec 14, 1832
VIII.   Aaron was born about 1816.
IX.      James was born about 1820 and died Dec 24,1847.

John Wells Will

I, John Wells of the county of Whitley and State of Kentucky, calling to mind the certainy of death and the uncertainty of life, being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory do make constitute and ordain this my last will and testament; I first will and bequeath my Soul to God who gave it and my body to the dust; and as to my wordly affairs and goods which it has pleased God to bless me with I make a distribution of the same in the following manner 1st After my decease I wish my burial and funeral expenses to be paid out of my cash on hand together with all the demands against my estate. 2nd I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Wells, the plantation where I now live, one bed, and furniture, one horse beast at her choice and what farming tools will be necessary to carry on at the farm and the furniture of the cubbard and dresser. I also give her my negress woman,Lott or Louisa, which may  be her choice for a waiting maid during  her natural-life. I also give her three cows and calves at her choice and what meat will do her and the family one year and the growing crop; and if she should marry again she is only to have a child's portion and at her decease the same is to be equally divided amongst my heirs. 3rd I hereby constitute and appoint my two sons Martin Wells and Abner Wells my executors to make a distribution of the  balance of my estate amongst my children without having any sale except that be my Negro Man name Jerry which I desire  shall be sold for the best price that can be had and the proceeds divided with the balance of my estate giving to my sons each fifty dollars more than to my daughters, calculating the plantations which I have given to my sons and daughters, at the estimation that I have put upon them myself which is as follows(Martin Wells three hundred and fifty dollars) (Abner Wells six hundred dollars) (Delila Steele two hundred dollars) (Elizabeth Stinson two hundred dollars) (Caroline Rockhold two hundred dollars) (Aaron Wells two hundred and fifty dollars) (James Wells two hundred and fifty dollars)  I also bequeath to my two grandchildren heirs of my daughter Charlotte Stowe twenty dollars to each child in cash.  In testimony whereof I have herein to set my hand and affixed my seal this 3rd day of July, 1841
