Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray- 1861-1865


 In 1912 a woman named Mamie Yeary send out questionaires to all the living confederate veterans she could find in Texas

. A remarkable number of them responded and she compiled these first person accounts in a large book (927 Pages). The book has been out of print for many years and sold on the rare book market for about $450.00

In 1986 Morningside Bookshop reprinted this book. The reprints are now out of print. But Morningside Bookshop has planned to release another reprint on October 15, 1999- see Morningside Catalogue 47 under the "y's"

Stanley Bessent, Civil War Historian and Researcher has provided some extracts from Mamie Yeary "Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray- 1861-1865" reprint for those living in Mills County, Texas:

Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray- 1861-1865

M. M. HANCOCK, Mullin, Texas

--According to the questionaire he completed in 1912,

he was born in 1840 at Lebanon, Tenn and enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861, at Paris, Texas, as private in Company G., Whitfield's Legion, Ross' Brigade, Jackson's Division, Army of Tennessee. Geo. W. Patterson, first Captain, and Hawkins, first Colonel. He was never changed, wounded, captured nor promoted. He was in the battles of Corinth, Murfreesboro and Thompson's Station.
