To CeCe In Tennessee:

I assure you that Betty and I are two different people and that can be verified. I live in Dallas and part of my work is teaching at a local university. I have had a thing for history since my mother who was a James told me stories of family connections to Jesse James. My undergraduate work was in history and for a while I taught in the subject in public schools. I became very interested in genealogy and have traced many my of my lines back past the 1700s. Unfortunately my James line stalled out. Pleasant James is my g-grandfather and I believe his father was Laban James. So far I have not been able to tie them into any established James genealogies.

Anyway my cousin sent me an article about Betty Duke in April 1999, and a few weeks later I met her. I discovered some interesting connections between Betty's g-grandfather and mine. (I have related this earlier.) I agreed to help her in her project by responding on the Internet on her behalf but with her input.

Betty lives in south central Texas near Georgetown. Her husband Joe and their three grown children also help her in the work.

Betty and I talk on the phone almost daily. Unless the remarks I make are a repeat I get her input as to what should be said. I try my best to represent Betty's views in her way and try to make it clear when it is my viewpoint. Betty receives copies of each of my letters. In some cases I send her a rough draft and she edits it before it is posted. This process takes hours of my time, but that helps Betty. She needs every spare minute to do research and writing her new book.

Betty's motive for writing the book is to relate her family stories, pictorial evidences, and other documentation that shows a relationship between JLC and JWJ. Obviously she sees this is a benefit to history and to future generations.

I believe that this project is worth careful examination and that will take some time but is all necessary before anyone can qualifiably say that Betty's claims are fully true. Someone wrote a while back that one collects available information, develops a theory, and seeks to prove or disprove. Just because one does not have the full proof at the moment does not mean that one should stop the search or find no value in the work. Supportive proof is mounting and with that as the trend, Betty will continue to see the work to the end.

Betty does choose to write her own letters without my paraphrasing from time to time. As a journalist I am sure you will be able to tell the difference when that happens.

David

Disclaimer and Message from David Hedgpeth:

Dear Reader,

The purpose of the letters and responses I have written on the Jesse James-James L. Courtney controversy is to fully and fairly examine all sides of the issue. It is a good possibility that my family in Texas is linked to Jesse James and James L. Courtney, so I have a driving personal interest to know the truth. For future generation and our peace of mind I feel moved to see this process to the end. My opinions and viewpoints today will modify as new information comes forth. Likewise, I hope all can say and mean that. Sometimes I may be wrong. If I make a statement in error, let me know and I will gladly correct it. If though it is a difference of opinion, then all are entitled to their own. I try to be careful in criticizing only the issues and not individuals. It may seem at times I am getting close to that but that is not my intent because doing so would be unproductive. I do try to engage everyone to broaden their perspective and work together for a common good to find the whole truth on this important family and historical issue.

I invite your input pro or con on the Genforum or to me directly. If you have an interest, then your help is needed.

Thanks to all,

David Hedgpeth
