Hi,
I noticed the listing of Mills County veterans and would like to contribute
what I know about Asbury S. Collins.
Asbury Sebastian Collins was born in February 1840 in Liberty County,
Republic of Texas, in an area of the county which, in 1846, became Polk
County, and later, in 1870, became San Jacinto County. He was a son of James
P. Collins and Eliza G. Ainsworth Collins who emigrated to the Republic of
Texas in 1838 along with the families of Asbury Sebastian Ainsworth, Jeptha
Patterson Ainsworth, and George M. Reese. The siblings of Asbury Sebastian
Collins were Eli L. K. H. Collins, William Greenbury (or Greenhill) Collins,
John Franklin Collins, and Carrie Eliza Collins Porter, wife of William S.
Porter, all of whom lived in Mills County in the late 1800s. After the death
of Eliza G. Ainsworth Collins, in 1863, James P. Collins married Mary Talley
Campbell in Gonzales County, Texas. Their children (half siblings of Asbury
S. Collins) were Dugall Collins, Lanny D. Collins, Loucinda Dorcus Collins,
(married John N. McCamy), Clements Eugene Collins, and Amza Mae Collins
(married Willie McGuffin).
Here is an obituary for Asbury Sebastian Collins
as copied from microfilm in the newspaper collection at the Center for
American History, Barker Center, University of Texas at Austin.

"A. S. Collins"
"Mr. Asbury Collins died at his home in this city Wednesday morning at
about 10 o'clock, after a continued illness, and his remains were laid to
rest in the Odd Fellows cemetery Thursday morning. Mr. Collins was 68 years
of age and had lived in this section a long time, having located at Williams
Ranch in 1879. He was a native Texan, and was reared in the southern part of
this state. He was known to all the people of this community and most of the
people in the county knew and liked him. He was ever courteous and
accommodating and his pleasant manners made friends for him of all with whom
he came in contact. For a number of years he served this precinct as
constable and of late years he had been employed as night watchman of the
town and in all of his official experience he was ever faithful to his trust
and careful to discharge every duty well. In his death the town has lost a
good citizen and all who knew him sympathize with his bereaved son and
daughter and other relatives in their great sorrow."

Asbury Sebastian Collins was married to Allie S. (maiden name not known)
Collins. Their two children were Cora A. Collins who was born in April 1872
and Frank Collins who was born in 1874.
I am a descendant of Carrie Eliza Collins Porter, sister of Asbury
Sebastian Collins. I have an excellent photograph of Asbury Sebastian
Collins. If there are any descendants, I would be happy to have copies made.
