Mr. R. S. Holmes
Holmes Funeral Home
Nixon, TX

Dear Mr. Holmes,

I acknowledge receipt of your Letter of August 18, 1945 notifying this office of the death of Mrs. Mary Jane Caraway, which occurred on June 30, 1945.

This is the first notice this office has had of the death of Mrs. Caraway. The law specifies that proof of death of a pensioner shall be made to the Comptroller within 40 days from the date of such death, by affidavit of the doctor who attended the pensioner during the last illness, or by the undertaker who conducted the funeral. Since it has been much longer than forty days after the death of Mrs. Caraway no Mortuary Warrant or burial fund can now be issued. For this reason it would be no use to furnish you blank forms for the collection of the burial allowance. However, I am enclosing you a blank but if same is filed, it can not be approved. I am also enclosing you a copy of the Mortuary Warrant Law.

I am very sorry the application was not filed within the required time specified by the Mortuary Warrant Law.

Yours very truly,

Geo. H. Sheppard
Comptroller of Public Accounts
