Gaetano was my paternal
grandfather, born September 19, 1877 or 1878. He came to New
Orleans, La. sometime before 1903. In May 1903 he met his wife
Giuseppa, daughter Maria and sons Antonino and Giovanni at the boat. My
father Anthony was born June 13, 1900 in Alcamo Sicily. There is a
story told me by cousins who are presently visiting Sicily, that Gaetano
was the best barber in Alcamo. The "Mafia" chief wanted to
have the best haircuts in Sicily, so Gaetano was kidnapped and held for
about 6 months. After 6 months, Gaetano requested permission to go home
to see how his wife and children were getting along. When he got home,
Gaetano was quickly sent to America. I am assuming that he arrived in
New Orleans. His brother-in-law who lived in New Orleans paid his
passage. My grandfather was manager of the Italian Hall in New
Orleans from sometime in the 1930's until his death in 1957. He
was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. Gaetano and
his minor children who were born in Sicily were Naturalized in June
1915.
