Subject: [{ITA-SICILY-L}] Gervasi, Borruso, Fundaro, Navarra of Castellamarre del Golfo

Hello

My name is Mary Gervasi Torgersen. I have recently started gathering information about my family heritage. Below you will find a list of names that I know are in my family background. If you think you might be related please email me at the address at the bottom of this page.

Names included:

>From Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, then NY.  Gervasi, Borruso, Fundaro, Navara,

>From California: Gervasi and Bologna

Gervasi of Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. My fathers parents immigrated to NY, USA around 1926. Their names were Anthony Gervasi and Castrenza (Nancy) Borruso Gervasi. Anthony's parents were Guiseppe Gervasi and Paola Fundaro Gervasi of Castellammare del Golfo. Anthony had at least one brother, his name was Frank.

Castrenza's parents I only have last names.

Father Borruso, Mother Navara. I do know that they had a vineyard in Castellammare del Golfo. They also made olive oil. He was a merchant and had ships. I think some of Castrenza's brothers may have been captains of the ships. The vineyard was on a hill overlooking Castellammare del Golfo.

My dad said he has a cousin in California with the last name Bologna. The cousin has at least 2 sons. One of the sons is the actor named Joseph.  I have also learned of a cousin in NY that my dad grew up with named Josephine Gervasi. She would have been born around 1923. My dad's name is Joseph.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Mary Gervasi Torgersen

I do not know much on the Navarra name. My dad was born in 1923 and his mother is Castrenza Borruso of Castellammare del Golfo, her mothers last name is Navarra and I believe she came from Spain. My dad does not have many memories to share about his family. He is and only surviving child and his father died when he was 12 and his mother about 10 years before I was born.

That is all I have.

Mary

My father Guiseppe Gervasi was born on April 17, 1923. His birth certificate was dated the 20th, his baptismal certificate was dated the 17th. They thought he was going to die, so they baptized him right away, and bathed him in wine to stimulate his body. I guess it worked because he is still alive and has 5 children of his own. He had siblings but all were miscarriages or lived a very short life. Guiseppe didn't know until recently that his name is Guiseppe, he always went by Joseph or Rocky.

Gervasi of Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. My fathers parents immigrated to NY, USA around 1926. Their names were Anthony Gervasi and Castrenza (Nancy) Borruso Gervasi. Anthony's parents were Guisepee Gervasi and Paola Fundaro Gervasi of Castellammare del Golfo. Anthony had at least one brother, his name was Frank Gervasi.

Castrenza's parents I only have last names.

Father Borruso, Mother Navarra. I do know that they had a vineyard in Castellammare del Golfo. They also made olive oil. He was a merchant and had ships. I think some of Castrenza's brothers may have been captains of the ships. The vineyard was on a hill overlooking Castellammare del Golfo.

Navarra may have come from Spain.

My dad said he has a 2nd cousin in California with the last name Bologna. The cousin has at least 2 sons. One of the sons is named Joseph, (the actor).

I have also learned of a cousin in NY that my dad grew up with named Josephine Gervasi. She would have been born around 1923. My dad's name is Joseph.

They called them twins.

This is all I have for now. Does any of this sound familiar?

Subject: [{ITA-SICILY-L}] what other lists are good ones

What other lists are good ones to join for us Sicilian Genealogy newbies? I do not have much information yet and do not really know where to start other than my dad. I talked to him today and found out her has a lot of good paperwork that I will be able to go through when I am down in California this summer, including his birth certificate, baptismal certificate, his father's naturalization papers, a little black address book that belonged to his mother.

I am sorry to say that because of his job with Lockeed he could not keep in touch with anyone outside of the US without getting all letters OK'd, so he didn't hassle with it. I also found out that his cousin Josephine Gervasi was born on the same day as him and that is why they called them twins. And he thinks he came here to the US in 1927 not 1926 the year I thought he came.  I cannot wait to get my hands on all his paperwork!! I figure I will be spending a lot of time at the photocopy machine when I get there. And then at the translation site when I get back home to my computer.

Maybe?? I am not sure where any relatives are. My Dad lost track of everyone and his parents died early. My grandfather when my dad was 12 and my grandmother 12 years before I was born. My Dad was an only child. He had a cousin that lived in NY also, I guess they grew up together. Her name was Josephine Gervasi. I do not know if there were any others. Josephine and my dad were both born on April 17, 1923. So, my search is rather blind. My dad has some paperwork that I will be going through in June, his mothers address book is in there. Hopefully I will be able to get more info through the paperwork. I told my dad I would be photocopying everything. Thanks for the info about a Chicago Gervasi.

I haven't asked for a while, so I will ask again. Is there anyone on the list with any of the following names on their list? Gervasi, Borruso, Navarra, Fundaro.

My dad and his parents Antonio Gervasi, Castrenza Borruso Gervasi came from Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. They came to the US via NY in 1926 or 27.  Then they lived there in NY. My Grandparents had a daughter born in NY that I know nothing about; she died either at birth or within a couple years, my dad does not remember anything else about her.

In Sicily the Borruso family had a vineyard and he was a merchant and owned ships. They also made olive oil. My grandfather Borruso married a Navarra.  Her brothers were captains of some of the ships. Eventually a Navarra bought the vineyard from Borruso around W.W.I. I do not have any first names.

GGrandpa Gervasi was Guisepee he married Paola Fundaro. That is all I know about them.

I asked because that is where my dad was born. In a castle on the hill with a vineyard and olives to make olive oil. My GGrandfather Borruso owned the place then. Around WW2 my Grandma Castrenza Borruso Gervasi's Uncle -?- Navarra bought it from my grandfather. I was just curious if you were going there and if so, if you could tell me about what you saw.
