Subject: [ITA-SICILY-L] Vincenzo
GigliaBecause of so many questions about omissions of information, I am reposting.
Vincenzo Giglia, and Rose Agnello got married ( I guess ) in Sinagra, Messina, Sicily, Italy. probably around 1890. Shortly after 1900 when Vincenzo, and Rose, came to America, they had probably 5 or 6 children. I don't know how many came with them initially, but most stayed in Sicily, for the time being. As they had enough money, they would send for the oldest child. This continued, until 1915, when they sent for the youngest child still in Sicily. That was Leone, who was 15.
Leone Giglia, after he came to America, was talked into changing his name from Giglia to Sillavo, by his brother William, who also changed his name.
These are the only two to do so.
The youngest child is Dean, born in America.
Leone was my father-in-law until his death in 1967.
In 1948, after his stepson, daughter and her husband had moved to California, he, his wife Elizabeth, maiden name Lisching, and youngest daughter Rosalind moved to Harbor City, Calif.
I married Rosalind in 1960. The family did not talk about the old days, to her, and since there is a 15 year time gap between her and her sister, only her sister would remember anything personally.
Her sister is in a home with dementia, and cannot give us any information.
I cannot find Vincent and Rose in the census, They died too late to be in the Indiana state death list, and too early to be on the SS death index.
Besides, he was an independent worker, buying produce from farmers, and reselling in the city, with no records.
The bright side: I have written to the Messina State Archives in Sicily (last week) Maybe something will come of this. but I thought, surely there must be some records of him.
I cannot find him on the immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild List, or any other ship list. I do not know what city he entered through into the U.S.
I cannot get a death certificate from Indiana, because I don't know when he died. His name does not appear on the Ellis Island on line index. I do not know if he became a citizen.
All I know is that my wife, knows that they went to East Chicago, Indiana, to visit them. I have a list of all the Cemeteries and Catholic churches in East Chicago, but have not found him in a cemetery yet. and hesitate to write to a church with so little information, since he did not attend church, although he was a Catholic.
If you can figure something I've missed. I'll be glad to hear from you.
