Subject: Surnames in Sicily

Hi,

I am new to the list and just thought I would post the surnames that I am looking for in Palermo -- Abate, Valentino and Romano.  My great-grandparents (Abate and Valentino) were both born in Sicily and immigrated to Detroit Michigan in about 1910.  Thanks

Peggy

I am a recent new commer to the list and I too am descended from an Abate.  My great grandmother was born Jennie (probably Giacoma or Giacomina according to what I have learned the American name translates to in Italian) Abate born November 24, 1889 to Rank (Franco or Francesco) Abate and Catherine (probably Caterina) Romano. Jennie married Joseph Valentino and they immigrated to the US around 1910-1913. Jennie had four sisters--Francis (Francesca), Anna, Marie and Catherine (Caterina).  Catherine was the only one to remain in Italy with her parents. My grandmother was quite young when her parents died (17 years) and only remembers that her parents are from Palermo Sicily, although the town of Balestrate does ring a bell with her but she is not sure for which parent as her father Joseph (Guiseppi) Valentino was also from Sicily. Just thought I would weigh in with my line. If it sounds at all familiar to anyone, I would love to hear from you.
