Subject: [{ITA-SICILY-L}] suggestions needed
I didn't get the file numbers from the FHC lady for the 1900 census, but I have the numbers for the Philadelphia passenger lists. I'll send this to the list, too, just in case somebody has information.
This is what I have so far:
Phila. Passenger lists index 1883-1948
Soundex
Christaldi : NARA #T526-9 and T526-10
FHL # 1380265 and 1380266
Califano: NARA #T526-8a
FHL #1380264
Philadelphia Passenger Lists index 1800-1906
Alphabetical
Christaldi: NARA #M360-22
FHL #0419445
Califano: NARA #M360-18
FHL #0419441
Angelina Califano (maiden name unknown) died July 6, 1926 while living at 1813 S. 17th St., Philadelphia. The burial was by J.W. Burke funeral home and the church was St. Thomas Aquinas. Buried with her is Salvatore Califano (her husband's name), but the cemetery has him as 6 years 11 months. He could be a grandson (my mother's younger brother). I've looked on the Internet for the funeral home and the church and come up blank. Does anybody have suggestions? Are there death records searchable online?
More: On the Christaldi side, my great-grandmother (maiden name unknown) was thought to be Antoinette. It seems to me that there would be a different spelling for an Italian. My first goal is to find out exactly where in Italy both sets of grandparents came from.
Thanks for all your help.

Subject: [{ITA-SICILY-L}] Catania ancestors
I just joined the list, hoping to get some tips on tracking down my grandfather's family‹ thought to be from Catania ‹ and my grandmother's family ‹ thought to be from Sorrento. My sister and cousin and I are taking a two-week trip to Sicily and the mainland in September, and it's been left to me to do some research.
I got a couple of Italian genealogy books but I think that people who've gotten their hands into it are better resources. I've done a couple of Web searches but come up with nothing. The Catania name is Christaldi and the Sorrento name is Califano, but I can't find any reference to either name, even spelling the former without the "h." There's one remaining uncle who remembers basically nothing, not even his grandparents names. When his sister died recently, we found naturalization papers for my grandmother's father and my grandfather's father. There was also an interesting Indenture contract with Stetson Hat Company for the latter.
We think both families came over in the 1880s and lived in the Philadelphia area, but don't know what port they came into. Did everyone at that time come through Ellis Island? Is there an archive of entrants through there?
I hope someone on the list can give me a jump start.
