Subject: Re: [{ITA-SICILY-L}] New photos on site - any updates for surnames?

Hi donna: I am very new to the list and my family name of DiGalbo is VERY rare in the U.S. but I have visited the town of Castelbuono (province of Palmermo) and found the birth records of my grandfather Vincenzo DiGalbo who came through Ellis Island around 1913-1915 and settled in Phila. He was the only one of his family to come to America as far as we all know.

But, Please add DiGalbo to the surname list!!! Grazie!

Well, I don't think that Galbo is possible now that I have gone to the Municipio Commune building in Castelbuono (in Nov. 1999) and looked up my grandfather birth certificate and his father and mother before him.  They have been in Castelbuono back into early or before 1800's. I always wondered if my grandfather's name was changed at Ellis island but it was not. Interestingly enough, Castelbuono contains a lot of DiGarbo's (with the "r") which is also a rare name. My grandfather had one sister he left behind and he never corresponded with his family after he left so his immediate family may have died out. There were 50 DiGalbo's listed in the current town register. I would have to get their addresses or go back and start walking the streets to see if any knew of my grandfather's family. I just wonder if there are any Italian American in the US with the name DiGalbo...we have never seen it here at all.

Wow, such long surname lists! Just want to tell everyone again my surname - My one Sicilian grandfather out of all of my Southern Italian grandparents and great grandparents.

DiGalbo

From Castelbuono (south of Cefalu, in the mts.), in province of Palermo. Vincenzo DiGalbo came to the U.S. in 1916-17 and was in his 20's then. I've been to Castelbuono and I know there are other DiGalbo's still there but don't know if I have any relatives there or here in the U.S.!?!?!?! Does anyone write to or know anyone from Castelbuono?
