Subject: [{ITA-SICILY-L}]  SULPHUR MINES---ITA-SICILY-D Digest V01 #64

My grandfather and his family were all involved with the sulphur mines in Caltinazetta as well. The lived in the town of Riesi, which is very close to Enna. Surnames are VITELLO, BELANTI, GALLANTI, PISTONE.  I visited Sicily in ' 98 and my remaining relatives in Riesi. It was a special treat for me as I was the only one in our family to return to Sicily since my father's family emigrated to the U.S. in 1914.  The sulphur mine my grandfather worked in at Riesi was owned by a Spanish prince. As I don't speak Italian/Sicilian, it was difficult for me to communicate and understand all the particulars regarding the mine but there was an old photo they showed me of the mine. I took a photo of that photo to show my Dad when I returned. I still have it somewhere. If you're interested, I'll go through my things and try to scan it for you. Just let me know.  When the mines in the area were depleted and failed financially, evidently, there was little work for the locals. So many of them left for greener pastures in the U.S., Canada, etc. at the turn of the last century.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll try to have the photo/s scanned for you.

Regards,

Dorothy

Subject: [{ITA-SICILY-L}] SULPHUR MINES IN CENTRAL SICILY

Hi there!

Does anyone have any information on the prosperity and decline of the SULPHUR MINES in Central Sicily? I would like to know more about these sulphur mines, what the product was used for, what problems (explosions/collapses, lung diseases, etc.) and how sulphur was traded/exported to other parts of the world. Also, what was it used for primarily (besides lighting matches)?

My grandfather and his family worked in a sulphur mine in Riesi, Caltanisetta. I remember him telling us (through my own father's translation) this his father (my g-grandfahter) was a "foreman" of the mine; also that the mine was owned by a Spanish prince!

My father, his parents, etc. left the town of Riesi in Caltanisetta (central/south of the island) in 1914, went through Ellis Island (their names are on the Wall of Honor there), and after 6 months in NYC, left and settled in Boston's North End.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
