Yes, Abbate is a very common name, even in Brooklyn, where my husband Frank is from. Here is some info we have on his family, sorry to say it doesn't seem to match with anyone else's.  

 

Frank's grandfather was Vincenzo Abbate, b 1851; his grandmother, Domenica Anania, b.1858; His uncles and aunt: Rocco, Gus, Salvatore, Vincenzo, and Tina.  His father, Giovanni; all deceased. Alan, we met a Rosario in Sicily one year, but I believe his name was Passalacqua.
