Griffin Johnson, also known as Griffith Johnston, is the earliest ancestor found so far on this line. He was born somewhere in Virginia, but was in Logan County, Ohio by 1818, when he married his first wife, Ruth Patton, there. Griffin moved to Adams County, Indiana, with his second wife, Jemima Cox, and their children, prior to 1840.
He was probably closely related to Andrew Johnson who married Jemima's sister, Esther Cox, and who also moved to Adams County, Indiana.
My thanks to other Johnson family researchers, in particular Craig Beeman, for generously sharing their research with me.
