Hutchison Family
Analyzing the Evidence
Who were the parents of Keziah Hutchison?
Keziah Hutchison was born about 1807, probably in Pennsylvania. In November 1825 she married William Dickenson Sims in Monroe County, Ohio, and shortly thereafter they moved to Auburn township, then in Richland County, Ohio, but now in Crawford County, Ohio.
On 6 August 1834 William D. Sims purchased 40 acres, described as the Northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 7, Township 22 North, Range 20 West.
On the same date James Hutchison purchased 40 acres, described as the Southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 7, Township 22 North, Range 20 West.
On 8 June 1840 James Hutchison and his wife Nancy sold this tract to Charles Hutchison for $400. No relationship is stated between the grantors and the grantee. The witnesses were William D. Sims and William Hutchison. William D. Sims was also the Justice of the Peace who officiated at the sale.
Were James & Nancy Hutchison Keziah's parents? And what other children might they have had?
James was listed in Auburn Township, Richland County in the 1830 and 1840 federal censuses, but had apparently either died or moved away before the 1850 census.
According to Enoch Baker's biography, Enoch's wife, Sarah Hutchison, was a daughter of James Hutchison.
And the Annual Report of the Secretary of State to the Governor of Ohio, Appendix B, Return of the Number of Deaf and Dumb, Insane, and Idiotic Persons, May 1856 lists James and Nancy Hutchison as the parents of Susan Hutchison, and states that they had a total of 13 children.
Possible children, located in Richland and Crawford County records:
- William Hutchison, who witnessed James's deed in 1840.
- Keziah Hutchison, born about 1807; married William Dickenson Sims.
- Sarah Hutchison, born about 1810; died 30 Jan 1851; married Enoch Baker.
- James Hutchison, born about 1811; married Lovina Heeter.
- Barnet C. Hutchison, born about 1815; died July 1896; married 1)Matilda Hook; 2)Rhoda Ann Munyon.
- Charles J. Hutchison, born about 1818; died before 1870; married Nancy King.
- Susan or Susanna Hutchison, born 4 Oct 1818; died 9 Jan 1871; she was an "idiot"; never married.
- Samuel Hutchison, born about 1821; married 1)Rachael Meek; 2)Catharine J. Dewit.
- Rebecca A. Hutchison, born 22 Jan 1824; died 29 Dec 1904; married James Maloney.
- John Hutchison, born about 1826; married Jane Ferguson.
Even if these all are James's children, several remain unidentified; some of them may have died young. It is also possible that Nancy was James's second wife, and he had additional children by an earlier wife.
In the 1830 census, James's household consisted of:
- 1 male 60-69; born between 1760-1770: James, born about 1765-1770
- 1 female 40-49; born between 1780-1790: Nancy, born about 1780-1785
- 1 male 20-29; born between 1800-1810: unidentified — perhaps James H. Hutchison, born about 1811 or William Hutchison who witnessed James's deed
- 1 female 15-19; born between 1810-1815: Sarah, born about 1810
- 1 male 15-19; born between 1810-1815: Barnet C., born about 1815
- 1 female 10-14; born between 1815-1820: Susanna, born in 1818
- 1 male 10-14; born between 1815-1820: Charles J., born about 1818
- 1 male 5-9; born between 1820-1825: Samuel, born about 1821
- 2 females 5-9; born between 1820-1825: Rebecca A., born in 1824; and unidentifed — probably died young as no additional female of this age is in the household in 1840
- 1 male 0-4; born between 1825-1830: John, born about 1826
In the 1840 census, James's household consisted of:
- 1 male 70-79; born between 1760-1770: James, born about 1765-1770
- 1 female 50-59; born between 1780-1790: Nancy, born about 1780-1785
- 3 males 20-29; born between 1810-1820: probably Barnet, Charles, and Samuel
- 1 female 15-19; born between 1820-1825; Rebecca, born in 1824
- 1 male 10-14; born between 1825-1830; John, born about 1826
What other records tie these Hutchisons together?
- In the 1850 census, John Hutcheson is listed (with slightly different ages) in both Enoch Baker's and Charles Hutcheson's households. Susanna Hutcheson is also in Charles's household.
- In the 1860 census, Susan Hutchinson is residing with James and Rebecca Maloney. Also in the household is an 8-year-old named Wm. Hutchinson.
- When she was a child, my grandmother knew Rebecca (Hutchison) Maloney, and was told that "Aunt Becky" was her grandfather's aunt.
- William D. Sims was a Justice of the Peace, and performed the marriages of James Maloney and Rebecca A. Hutchison, Enoch Baker and Almira Wood, Lewis Warner and Rachel Baker, and Samuel Hutchison and Catharine J. Dewit.
- Samuel Hutchison obtained the marriage license for Lewis Warner and Rachel Baker.
- Barnet Sims obtained the marriage license for Samuel Hutchison and Catharine J. Dewit.
- Names:
- William and Keziah (Hutchison) Sims named sons Barnet, Charles, James, Samuel, and John; and a daughter Rebecca.
- Enoch and Sarah (Hutchison) Baker named sons James, John, and Ephraim; and daughters Nancy and Keziah.
- James and Lovina (Heeter) Hutchison named sons Ephraim and James.
- Samuel Hutchison named daughters Rebecca and Sarah; and sons Enoch B. and James.
- Charles Hutchison named his only son James.
- James and Rebecca (Hutchison) Maloney named their daughter Sarah Keziah; and had sons named Charles and William.
- Locations:
- William and Keziah (Hutchison) Sims, as well as several of their children moved to Van Wert County, Ohio and the adjoining Adams County, Indiana after the Civil War.
- Charles and Nancy (King) Hutchison moved to Van Wert County, Ohio prior to the 1860 census.
- Susanna Hutchison is buried in Backesto Cemetery in Adams County, Indiana, along with member of the Maloney family.
- Samuel Hutchison's son Enoch B. was in Adams County, Indiana by 1870. Samuel's widow and younger children may also be there.
- James and Rebecca (Hutchison) Maloney also moved to Adams County, Indiana prior to 1870.
Contradictory Evidence
Rebecca (Hutchison) Maloney's death certificate gives her father's name as "Wm Hutchison", his birthplace as "Not known", her mother's name and birthplace also "Not known". However, the informant, Frank Maloney of Muncie, Indiana, was Rebecca's grandson, and may not have actually known the correct facts.
Conclusion
Based on the majority of the above evidence, I believe that Keziah Hutchison, who married William Dickenson Sims, was a daughter of James and Nancy Hutchison.
