SAINT MARY'S CHURCH

The ruins of St. Mary's Church, Gowran, County Kilkenny. The plaque in the bottom picture was erected in 1225. It reads: "This was a collegiate church, built about 1225. The Chancel, now used for divine worship, contains an ogham stone, and baptismal font. There are several tombs of the Butler family, Lords of the district from the 13th century."

The modern day church at Gowran, County Kilkenny was built in 1826. It originally formed the chancel of St. Mary's, shown above in ruins.
