Towey, ó Toghdha A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Toghdha (meaning ‘chosen, elected’). A sept of the Uí Fiachrach who were chiefs of Bredagh, a district now in the barony of Tirawley, embracing the parish of Moygawnagh and part of the adjoining parish of Kilfian. In 1890 Towey was numerous in Roscommon, it was also to be found in Mayo. The estimated number of bearers was 1,344.
