MacTiernan, (Mac)Kiernan, Mac Tighearnáin A Gaelic surname meaning son of Tighearnán (diminutive of Tighearna, meaning ‘lord’). A sept of Breifney who were formerly chiefs of Tellach Dhunchadha, now the barony of Tullyhunco in the west of Cavan. A sept of Fermanagh of the same stock as the Maguires who were formerly chiefs of Clann Fearghaile. A sept who were a branch of the O’Connors in Roscommon, descended from Tighearnán, grandson of Turlough Mor O’Connor, Ard Rí. In its anglicised form difficult to distinguish from ó Tighearnaigh. In 1890 McTernan was numerous in Leitrim, and the estimated number of bearers was 896 (including variants), McKiernan was to be found in Ulster and the estimated number of bearers was 800. ,
