Sharkey, ó Searcaigh A Gaelic sept derived from searcach meaning ‘loving’. A sept which originated in Tir Eoghain, but spread to Donegal and Connacht. In 1890 Sharkey was principally found in Roscommon, Donegal, Tyrone, Dublin and Louth, and the estimated number of bearers was 2,600. In the United States Sharkey is the 4,216th most numerous surname with an estimated 8,250 bearers.
