Ruane, ó Ruadháin A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Ruadhán (diminutive of ruadh for ‘red’). A sept of the Ui Fiachrach who possessed a district lying between Newbrook and Kileen, to the north of Ballinrobe in Mayo. A sept of the Uí Mhaine in Galway. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries seven of the name were bishops in Connacht. In 1890 the surname was principally found in Mayo (1,300) and Galway, and the estimated number of bearers was 1,660.
