Purcell, Puirsceil A surname of Cambro-Norman origin derived from the French pourcel meaning ‘little pig’. The family became completely hibernicized and were one of the most influential families of Ormond (Kilkenny and Tipperary). The head of the family had the title Baron of Loughmoe (near Thurles, County Tipperary). In 1890 the estimated number of persons bearing the surname was 3,539. In that year the surname was chiefly found in Kilkenny and Dublin in Leinster and Tipperary in Munster.
