Lavelle, ó Maolfábhail A Gaelic surname derived from Maolfábhail meaning ‘fond of travel’, a sept of West Connacht. There was also a sept of the Cineál Eoghain, who were chiefs of Carraig Brachaidh (Carrickabraghy) in north-west Inishowen, in Donegal. In this case anglicised as MacFall. In 1890 Lavelle was principally found in Mayo and Galway, and the estimated number of bearers was 1,700. In the United States it is the 7,266th most numerous surname with an estimated 5,500 bearers.
