Keegan, MacAodhagáin A Gaelic sept meaning son of Aodhagán, diminutive of Aodh. A sept of Uí Maine who were brehons. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries they settled in Ormond and Desmond. Also see Egan. In 1890 Keegan was principally found in Dublin, Roscommon, Wicklow and Leitrim, and the estimated number of bearers was 4,250. In the United States it is the 3,631st most numerous surname with an estimated 8,250 bearers.
