The chief lowland family of the surname were of Fordell in Fifeshire. A branch of the Clan Gunn bears the surname, they are believed to be descendant of Henry, the younger son of George Gunn, a chief of the clan in the fifteenth century. The MacEanruig (anglicised Henderson) of Glencoe are probably descended from Dughall who lived in the early part of the fourteenth century.
