Brennan, ó Braonáin, ó Branáin

A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Braonán, which personal name is a diminutive of Braon meaning ‘sorrow’.

A sept of Ossairge (Ossory) who were Chiefs of Uí Dhuach, in the north of the present Kilkenny.

A sept of Crevagh in Westmeath.

A sept of Síol Anmchadha, of the same stock as the ó Madáin (O’Madden), seated in the barony of Longford in south-east Galway.

A sept of Dunkerron, who were followers of ó Súileabháin More (O’Sullivan More), in Kerry.

It is difficult to distinguish the anglicised form of ó Braonáin from ó Branáin :

A Gaelic surname meaning descendant of Branán. The personal name Branán is a diminutive of Bran, which means ‘a raven’.

An ecclesiastical sept, who were erenaghs of the church of Derry and of Derryvullan in Fermanagh also anglicised Brannan.

In 1890 Brennan was the twenty-eight most numerous surname and the estimated number of bearers was 16,000. It was the most numerous surname in Kilkenny and Sligo, and was also principally found Dublin, Mayo, Carlow and Roscommon.

In the United States it is the 744th most numerous surname with an estimated 44,000 bearers. It is numerous in the states of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

In England and Wales in 1996 it was the 340th most numerous surname.
