Accidents block highway, send 3 to hospital
News Tribune

Traffic was blocked on Highway 50 West in Jefferson City for about 90 minutes Saturday afternoon, after a rear-end accident that sent three people from one car to the hospital emergency room.  James Klinghammer, 72, Williamsburg, was listed in stable condition Saturday night at St. Marys Health Center. Sharon Padelford, 39, Jefferson City, and Janet Klinghammer, 63, Williamsburg, were treated and released from St. Marys.
Police said the problems began when a box of antique glassware fell from a pickup truck into the westbound lanes of the highway, just west of the Highway 179 interchange. A vehicle following the pickup smashed the box, spreading glass across the highway and stopping traffic in both lanes and the on-ramp from Highway 179.
However, a westbound GMC Suburban, driven by Emad C. Faddoul, 49, Holts Summit, ran into the back of Padelford's Pontiac Grand Am, knocking it into the median. The Suburban then ran off the right side of the highway and struck a sign.
Police said James Klinghammer was in the right front passenger seat of Padelford's car, and had to be removed from it with the help of extrication tools. Janet Klinghammer was in the back seat.
Police said although the trunk of the Grand Am was collapsed, the interior of the car was in good shape following the accident.
