"My mother is a daughter of Maynard Brashears Smith. Maynard, my grandfather took the name of his stepfather and was known as a "Young" most of his life.
My grandmother was Wanda Irene (Beals) Smith. Maynard was the son of Dovie Gertrude (Brtashears) Smith and Douglas Smith. Dovie was the daughter of Henry N. Breshears, and his second wife Sarah (Allen) Brashears. She is thought to be Cherokee. Henry is the son of Berry and Francis Brashears. They removed from Lawrence County Tennessee.My grandfather Maynard remembered his grandpa as a "Hard Hearted person". This relayed to me by my mother.
Dovie, my gr-grandmother loved her parents dearly. She told us that her dad was a preacher and related a story of how she could not wear makeup because of this. One Sunday she decided she wanted to look pretty for a young man. She pinched her cheeks to make them blush and took flour from the flour barrel and put it on her face. She was made an example of in front of the congregation-embarrassing!
She told us her mother was a Cherokee Indian, I remember her telling this as if it was yesterday. She was very proud of her Indian heritage. Her mother died in child birth when Dovie was a young girl. She was probably no older than five or six. She told us it took three days for her to die. She would never tell us if the baby survived. After this she and her sister Molinda were raised by other families. She by the Brookins (Dysee Brashears her Aunt was married to a Barookins) and Molinda by a family named Covington. Their brother Claude dwas raised by another family. Molinda and Dovie kept in touch. They searched until their death for their brother Claude and never found him.
Of their half brothers and sisters they were most close to Ozro and William. I have copies of letters that are in my mother's possession for William's daughter Perle.
Sarah relayed a story of a long treacherous journey her family made. People cried all the way she told Dovie. Could be this was the account of the "Trail of Tears" made earlier by her parents and grandparents from Tennessee.
I have found no record other that from Dovie's heart as she remembered her mother Sarah. I made her a promise not to forget my Indian heritage when I was a little girl. Dovie and I were very close. She was very spiritual and was gifted with spiritual insight into events. This was passed down to various members of our family. (Note by Georgene-We have insight in our family also. This closeness of the spirit as it gives guidance to our lives is very special)
Cheryl spoke to Molinda's granddaughters yesterday and they have no rememberance of her parents as she was raised by the Covingtons. They recall Brashears cousins by the name of Penny and Brookins. They have fond memories of their uncle Ozra and Aunt Ada. I have a picture of Ozra and Ada. Uncle Ozra ran a sawmill. Even to this day , even though I have given the correct pronounciation, they call "Ozra" Arzo". He has passed away years ago.
I have Maynards birth certificate. His given name is Maynard Brashears Smith, born in Oklahoma City Oklahoma. Please note, his grandpa Henry, Dovie and Maynard are in Oklahoma in the 1910 Census. His father Douglas Smith born in Texas, is living in Denver Colorado, a white man age of 23. Mother is Dovie Brashears born in Oklahoma, Post Office address Stonewall Oklahoma. She is white and age 19.
I have not located the marriage certificate for her and Douglas yet. I have the original of her and second husband John A. Young. They married in Gainesville, Texas on 2 Feb 1915. Marriage between J.A. Young and Mrs. Dovie Smith.
My research has been concentrated on finding Sarah, Dovies mother. I would like to know where she is buried and who her parents were. I have searched the Oklahoma Territory Census and the Indian Territory Census and have not found Henry and Sarah. They do not appear on the 1900 Texas Census either. Sarah died about 1893-98. I still have a promise to keep. There is a problem with Dovie's birthdate. She claimed October 1888. Molinda's daughter say Dovie was the oldest sister. Could be Nov 1891 or Nov 1892." **There is a problem with the math here!***

Breshears named his oldest son James Monroe, one son Henry, George W,
Moses Taylor and Samuel Franklin. Grandfather had 13 children my father
the 13th. My gr- grandfather born in Tishmingo Co. Mississippi in 1836.
He named his sons Calvin who died young, Marion who died young, Dekalb
lived all of his life in Arkansas, Moses Taylor, my gr - father lived
all his life in Montgomery Co. & Garland Co. AR. William Henry and
Robert Monroe lived and died in the same counties.The story is told that my gr gr-father Henry lost three oldest children
during the Civil War.
