Ithra Sr. Breshears (William Breashear , William Breashear , William (Brasur) Brasier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born on 3 Sep 1779 in Spartenburg, Spartenburg, SC. The lineages of Meridith Dockin Breshears are in the possession of Brenda Collins of Mottlow Creek, Spartenburg, SC. She owns a Sawmill on the original Breshears land there. Memory Lester by the Rev.Ira Brashear and Christopher C. Brashears they identified their forefather as Matthew Brashears. This would have to
make (1) Marsham (a relative - pg 306 "TBS") a descendant of (2) Samuel
(3) Matthew.

SOURCE: Married CORDELIA dau of MARSHAM and LUCY PHELPS, a relative.
Double relative PHELPS/BRASHEARS? According to the account in "TBS",
Cordelia was much older than the other siblings in the family of Marsham
& Lucy Phelps Brashears. If she married in 1799, she would have been
born between 1770-74 or t-abts. Is this an error in linkage - or
statistics ? She should have been born abt 1799 to have married this
Marsham.

Marsham married Cordelia Brashear daughter of Marsham Brashear Lt. and Lucy Phelps on 11 Apr 1799 in , Bullitt, Kentucky. Cordelia was born in 1780 in , Bullitt, Kentucky.

Family tradition says 16 Children were born to John & Neoma Ann(Hogg) Breshears family, 1830 Census Lawrnceburg TN, shows possible girl child not
otherwise recorded, dau of John & Neoma Ann.

1927... Eighth Grade English class assignment for Minnie McGee: My great
great grandfather lived in Tennessee many, many years ago. There were
several children, they were mostly farmers. Great-Great Grandpa's name
was John Breshears. His wife's name was "Oma". I don't know the names
of their brothers or sisters. When Tennessee began to have many people
coming from eastern states, gr-gr-grandfather and some of his brothers
decided to go farther west, to Missouri, and maybe on to Texas. They had
heard of the fertile land in the valleys along the streams in
Missouri so they decided to go there first. I don't know what year it
was, but it was a long time before the Civl War, they loaded up their
Oxen drawn wagons and left for Tennessee. I don't know how the name was
first spelled, but when they left Tennessee, each one changed a letter
in the name. My gr-gr-grandfather came to Polk Co., Missouri and settled
seven or eight miles from here. One brother settled farther north and
another moved to the south. I think one went to Texas or Arkansa. They
had many hardships and when they got to the Mississippi River, it was up
but going down. They had to wait for a few days before the ferry boat
could cross. Two or three families moved their wagons farther north to
cross. Two or three families caught up with gr-gr grandfather's wagons.
At least one came here with him. One of their daughters married his son.
Gr-gr grandfather John and Oma had 15 or 16 children, some died young.
Their son Jesse was my grandpa. Great grandma's name was JUMP. Her
folks came about the same time as the others. There weren't many white
people here when they got here. They lived in their wagons for a while,
as they were building their log house. Once a storm tore up their house.
I don't know which gr-gr- grandpa's house it was. [John Breshear's-GH]
Lots of people began to come here soon after they got here. My great
grandfather GLADDEN didn't come for quite a while. My grandmother was
Mary Breshears, and my grandpa was Leslie Gladden, He died when mama was
three. Grandma died a few years later. Mama lived with Uncle Dan Gladden
till she got married. Daddy's grandpa and grandma came from Tennessee
too but they did'nt know each other. His mother came from Springfield
Illinois. Her name was Margaret ROBBINS, his was Mart McGEE. Mama told
me she lived with her grandparents with her mother and little sister
after her father died. She remembers when her great grandmother died.

LETTER...Minnie Fowler: I was told for as long as I can remember that
the Dallas Co., Breshears were not related, or to distant to count. They
lived near some of my father's brother and sisters and we often saw them
when we visited our McGee relations near Charity. I couldn't understand
why uncle George and Polk were my uncles and this man wasn't---. They
were all BRESHEARS but mother said they weren't kin. It seems JESSE
BRESHEARS lived in Dallas Co., at one time. What became of him? He
married ELIZABETH BELL. My gr-grandmother GLADDEN was Caroline BELL born
in Indiana 24 Feb. I hope to check this out farther, if possible, to see
if they were related. What became of WILLIAM and Polly Breshears MAY.
Did they come here also. I grew up with a family of MAYS not far from gr-gr-grandfather's
homestead [JOHN?}, with graves in an old grave yard a short distance south of that area.

An old letter:
1833...State of Tennessee, McNairy Co., directed to Larnce [sic] Co Tennessee. From
William BRESHEARS to Henry BRESHEARS and forewarded by John BRESHEARS:

Dear Brother; I imbrace this opportunity to inform you that we are all
well at present. Thank you. Hoping these lines will find you enjoying
the like blessing. I have nother [sic] perticular to wright to you but
can inform you that I am not settled here. I intend to move away from
this part of the world as soon as I can. I have never had enny chance to
right to you before I intend to come and see you as soon as I can. I
can't tell when between now and Christmas ecept I am providentally
hindered. I shall namor [sic] but remain your loving brother til
deth...WILLIAM BRESHEARS. Note...William would have been heir of
Henry's estate, which could have tied them to William SR., Henry's
Father, the estate possibly originally in McNairy Co TN? This letter
was saved by the Henry BRESHEARS family and taken to Missouri in 1838.

TRADITION: The descendants of John and Neoma Ann Breshears remember
there were 16 children in the family. One girl child probably died in Tennessee. This is indicated by the 1830 Census of Lawrence Co TN. The Census for 1820 and 1830 lists a John Breshears JR. in Tennessee. This John
is presumably listed as an heir in the land transaction from HENRY and others TO JOHN BRESHEARS.
The land is then resold in 1838 just prior to the removal of JOHN and Neoma Ann BRESHEARS to Benton Co., Missouri.
John BREASHEARS qualified for a land grant for service in the war af 1812. The families of ALEXANDER, NATHAN, HENRY, NATHAN, MIDDLETON [possibly THOMAS, AQUILLA, WILLIAM] and JOHN BRESHEARS arrived in the Benton Co., Mo., area and took up homesteads. Tradition tells us there were seven brothers who migrated by
Ox cart from Tennessee to Missouri. The first cabin built by the John Breshears family was blown away in a Cyclone.

The 1840 census records John and Neoma Ann BRESHEARS as living in Benton
Co. This area was originally counties of Dallas, Hickory, St. Clair,
Cedar, Dade and Webster and was acredited by act of congress 13 March
1835. John filed for land in 1840, described as "Twp 34, Range 21".
When he died he owned the following land, 520 acres [120acres, lot7 twp
34, range 21]-[40 acres, sec 1, twp 34, range 21 lot 4]-[80 acres, lot8
sec 1 twp34 on range 21]-[120 acres, lot3 sec2 twp34 range21 ]-[ 12
acres lot2, sec2, twp34 range12]. After John's death Neoma Ann
Breshears made her home with her son James Breshears. [See account under

1840...Polk Co MO., 2nd Division.

Aquilla BRASHER age 20-30 or 60-70, 2 males these ages in household.
This is probably Aquilla from Christian Co., KY.
WILLIAM BRASHER age 20-30; male: 1un5; 1-70-80; female: 1un5; 1-20-30.
This may be William and Mary Clayton. Who settled in Ralls Co? Margaret
Mason research [no source] said a JOHN, WILLIAM and HENRY BRASHER were
in Christian Co., KY., with AQUILLA and THOMAS and it appears to be them
that migrated through Warren Co., TN., to Lawrence Co., TN. Then removed
on to Benton - Polk Co., MO.

WILLIAM BRASHER 20-30; age 1810/20; males: 2un5; 2-5to10; 1-20to30; 5
slaves: Is this William and Rosanna Woods Breshears?
1810...THOMAS BRASHER age 20-30; age 1810/20; 1un5;

1818-1838...LAWRENCE CO TN: See descendants of HENRY ALEXANDER
BRESHEARS.

1815...HOWARD CO MISSOURI LAND: A William had land grant at this early
date.

1783-1810...This then seems to be descendants of the old WILLIAM, AQUILLA, JOHN & THOMAS BRASHERS of record, in Dist 96, SC., who removed from the Cumberland County NC., about 1751.

LETTER: From Minnie Fowler 1972...Here is a point I've been thinking on
for some days. I don't know where to start. On pg 68, "GOLDEN LINKS", By Georgene Humphries) it
states HENRY H. BRESHEARS son of JOHN & NEOMI ANN HOGG BRESHEARS, was a
baptist minister, and that the BRESHEARS were traditionally "HARD
SHELLED" or "PRIMITIVE BAPTISTS". Most of mother's BRESHEARS were of
that faith. I've heard many older people talk of this when I was a
child. I used to listen to mother's older friends talk about AUNT OMA
with reverence. I was sure they had belonged to the primitive Baptist
Church, and heard them talk of UNCLE HENRY. My cousin is clerk of the
church where my parents belonged in LOUIBURY, We got out the old books
and they only go back to 1897. So we don't know where to go from there.
I do know that in 1832, the Baptist Church divided. From the time of the puritans until 1832 The Baptists were all one denomination. They were called the old school & the new school after 1832. There was a division
in the families and some homes. Now it seems the HICKORY CO & BENTON CO MISSOURI, BRESHEARS were MISSIONARY BAPTISTS, as are many of JOHN'S descendants. JESSE BRESHEARS, JOHN'S son was Primitive Baptist. [We might find something from the pastor of mother's church about TN; SC & NC BAPTISTS?]. Has the family of WILLIAM and MARY MAY been pursued? There was a family of MAYs,lived near the BRESHEARS Homestead. Mother
thought they were related. My daughter found an old MAY cemetery ,but didn't copy the graves. I have a picture of RAYMOND BRESHEARS, probably RALPH RAYMOND b 1894? I am working on JESSE CARROL & RHODA Catherine JUMP BRESHEARS. Waiting replies to letters now. I'm working my GLADDEN-BELL line which has been researched back to the 3rd crossing of the MAYFLOWER. Sincerely; MINNY FOWLER with MAY GRAVES.

Jesse's occupation was "Miller".

records still available... No other proof available at this time.

Hi Georgene,
I sent this to the Breshears List, but thought I would also send it
to you, in case you had any thoughts or feelings about it.

We've had almost no data on Jesse Brashears (he apparently kept the
older spelling of the surname), s/o Henry Breshears Sr. Cathy
posted some data on GenForum lately that, added to
what fragments I had, begin to make a family history for Jesse. Here's what
Cathy and I have together:

Jesse Brashears and Elizabeth Bell/ Mary _____
83. Jesse Brashears, (s/o Henry Breshears Sr and Eleanor ?Hardin), b. SC,
c1796 (54 in 1850, Dallas Co, MO); m.1. 2 March 1818, Lawrence Co, TN,
Elizabeth Bell (Early East Tenn Marr, by Sistler), b. c1800-1804 (16-26 in
1820; 20-30 in 1830); m.2. Mrs. Mary (_______) Flanigan, b. c1805 (45 in
1850). Jesse seems to have kept the older spelling of the surname: Brashears.
Jesse is listed on the 1819 Tax List of Lawrence Co, TN, and the 1819
census of voters. He is in the 1820 census, beside Henry Breshears Sr, with
a wife and one dau 0-10, probably born 1819, since he had just married in 1818.
In 1826, he was on the Lawrence Co, TN, Tax list, beside Henry Jr, William,
and a cluster of his brothers.
In the 1830 Census, Lawrence Co, TN, he has 5 daughters and a son
(100001-22101).
In 1830 and 1833, he signed deeds in Lawrence Co, TN, transfering his right
to lands of Henry Brashear Sr to his brother, John Breshears/Brashears.
Some time after 1840 and before 1850, Jesse married a second time, a Mrs.
Mary Flanigan who (in the 1850 census, Dallas Co, MO) had several Flanigan
children: Roda Flanigan, b. c1831 (19 in 1850); John Flanigan, b. c1833 (17
in 1850); Lavina Flanigan, b. c1835 (15 in 1850); Elizabeth Flanigan, b.
c1837 (13 in 1850); Thomas J. Flanigan, b. c1839 (11 in 1850). Then come:
Malinda Brashears, b. c1834 (16 in 1850); Isobel Brashears, b. c1837 (13 in
1850); Jesse C. Brashears, b. c1841 (9 in 1850); Cintha E. Brashears, b.
c1844 (6 in 1850). (Thanks to Cathy for the
info.) We don't know how many, if any, of the Brashears children were
Mary's; only the last two are possibles.

Family of Jesse Brashears and Elizabeth Bell/ Mary _____:
1. dau Brashears, b. c1819 (1-10 in 1820; 10-15 in 1830)
2. dau Brashears, b. c1820-25 (5-10 in 1830)
3. dau Brashears, b. c1820-25 (5-10 in 1830)
4. dau Brashears, b. c1825-30 (0-5 in 1830)
5. dau Brashears, b. c1825-30 (0-5 in 1830)

9. Jesse C. Brashears, b. c1841 (9 in 1850)
10. Cynthia E. Brashears, b. c1844 (6 in 1850)

That many people surely left more paper tracks than we have found so far!
Help, anyone?

They also brought with them from Tenn, a slave call Aunt Roda. Roda
died 9-6-1878 and is buried in

This information was submitted on May 9, 1994 by Don Brooks a

Etheridge.

DECENDENTS OF HENRY JR AND ATSY BRESHEARS OF SO. CAROLINA.

Henry Breshears Jr (B) Oct 23, 1801, probably in No. Car. (D) Mar 18,
1860, married Atsy Etheridge.
They came to Missouri from Tennessee in 1838 and settled in what became
known as Breshears Valley. They settled near a bend of the Pomme De
Terre river, about half way between the future county seats of Hickory
and Benton Counties.
He was followed by his sister Margaret and her husband Alexander
Breshears (Kissin Cousins) in about 1831 or 1832. They came after the
treaty with the Osage Indians ( and other tribes ) was signed.
These tribes gave up this territory in exchange for reservations in the
Indian territory which later became Oklahoma. One of the ironies of
this transaction was, the discovery of oil on the land assigned to the
Osage Indians. Consequently some of the tribe are quite wealthy today,
in place of the beautiful but generally hard-scrabble ground which they
had been forced to give up, they have oil.

Henry married Atsey Etheridge daughter of Thomas Etheridge in 1822 in Tenn. Atsey was born on 1 Feb 1806 in , , Tennessee. She died in 1888 in , Hickory, MO. She was buried in Henderson CEM.

Jim Prine 1998 Notes:
Henry Breshears, Jr. was born in South Carolina and was married to Atsey Ethridge about 1822, probably shortly before they migrated to Lawrence County Tennessee. Their first child was born in Tennessee on April 20, 1823.
According to Lawrence County Court records, several Breshears families were living in and about the county. The name had several spellings such as Brashears, Beshears, Boshears,Brasures, Boshers, Bashears, etcs.
Several of the families had moved on to Missouri by 1833-5. Alexander, Middleton, Jesse, Andrew, and Nathan Turner, known as the Breshears with the money, were already settled in and near the place to be known as Breshears Valley but Henry and his family did not leave Tennessee until April of 1838. He and his family stayed the winter of 1838 in Dallas
County, Missouri where a son, Henry Thomas, was born November 22, 1838. Henry's brothers, John and William and some of the Southard and Ethridge families, who were a part of the wagon train, chose to remain in Dallas County. William and his brother-in-law, Matthew Ethridge, moved to Arkansas between 1840 and 1850. Henry was not listed on the 1840 Benton County Census or the 1850 Census of Hickory or Benton County. The first mention of Henry's family was in 1860 and by that time, Henry had passed away. Two of Henry's children
were buried in the Henderson Cemetery. One, Matthew Calvin was buried in November, 1843 and Jesse Hardin was buried on Christmas Day, 1845. This would indicate that Henry was living in the area at the time.
The Census of 1840 listed six Breshears living in Benton County. They were Jesse, a son of Henry, Sr., who married Elizabeth Bell (Jesse moved on to Polk Co.), Middleton, Nathan, Robert, Alexander, and Andrew. Henry Jr. had a brother, John, who married Naomi Ann Hogg, was living in Polk County, Missouri and another, William, who married Anna Ethridge, was living in Montgomery County, Arkansas in the 1840s. William was living in McNairy County, Tennessee in September of 1833.
When Henry first came to the Valley, he lived on the land that later was owned by his son, Levi. This farm was then owned by Horace, son of Steve Breshears, and grandson of Madison Golman Breshears then by Rona, son of Marion Breshears and grandson of John Martin Van Buren Breshears. Rona then sold it to Ed Prine, whose wife, Nell, was the daughter of William Wesley Breshears, a son of John A. and grandson of Alex Breshears. It is presently owned by Durward Byers whose grandfather was John Henry Breshears. The farm that Henry finally settled on was purchased from Sampson Norton. This was the property where Henry built his eight-room log home overlooking the Valley to the east, that was so well described in the account of the January, 1933 tornado in the Kansas City Star newspaper. According to the article which was written from an interview with Henry's grandson, Henry moved from Tennessee in 1859 and set up a blacksmith shop in the Valley. This date was a misprint or the actual date was misunderstood by the Star reporter. The land in the county was surveyed and sectionized in 1838 but Norton did not file on the property until March 30, 1847. He probably filed on it at that time so he could sell it to Henry. Norton had also filed on land in Polk County in 1839 but in the early 1840s, during the Slicker War, Sampson Norton was living on a farm, west of the Pomme de Terre, overlooking what is now (1998) known as the Phillip's ford. This information is in the History of Hickory County.
Henry, Jr. was 58 years old when he died at his home March 18, 1860 of an unknown cause. Atsey lived on until Nov. 11, 1888 and died at the age of 82. Their graves were in the Henderson Cemetery, surrounded by a wall of field stones. The graves were moved to the Avery Cemetery because of the building of the Truman Dam.

193. Eleanor or Nelly Brashears (Henry Alexander Breshears , John Brashier or Braysor , John Brashier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born about 1804/1805 in Of, Spartenburg, North Carolina.

Batch #: 8705605, Sheet #: 01, Source Call #: 1396312

Eleanor married Richard Pippin in 1825 in , Lawrence, Tennessee. Richard was born about 1804 in Of, Spartenburg, North Carolina.

If memory serves -I believe I've seen James Pippen in North Carolina and
have always thought this could be the tie between pippen and a Brashears living in his household.(Note to me: See lists from ID 0735)

Richard and Eleanor had the following children:

  338 F i Margaret Pippin.
  339 F ii Mary Pippin.

Jerry Johnson research recompiled by Roy Forbes sealed William Marion Breshears to MARY PIPPIN. Georgene does not have this marriage. [needs verification]. The parent connection is unproven.
Mary married William Marion Breshears son of Henry Alexander Brashears Jr. and Atsey Etheridge. William was born on 5 Oct 1833 in of Lawrenceburg, Lawrence, TN. He died about 1861/1863 in Camp Cole, Civil War, Missouri.

William died at Cole Camp, Missouri as a result ot Pneumonia contracted during action at the beginning of the Civil War. He and his brother Henry T., were members of a group of Home Guards at that place. They were trying to prevent
the removal of Arms and Provisions to a more advantagious part of the state. He had become chilled during the day's action. He also drew the duty of careing for the horses that night. He became ill and was unable to recover. After his death he was buried on the farm of the good German couple who had cared for him while he was ill.

GEDWRAP suggests checking notes for hanging indents.
  340 M iii Henry Pippin.
  341 M iv William Pippin.
  342 F v Ellen Pippin.
