============================================================================================Notes by Charles Brashears: Correction of Errors??
There is a pedigree chart in the Ancestral Files in the Family History
Library in Salt Lake City, which contains some serious errors. And these
errors keep perpetuating themselves, because someone copies the pedigree and
distributes them, thinking they've nailed down the family history. Is there
a way anyone can destroy that erroneous pedigree? The one I'm thinking of is
at http://www.familysearch.org/Search/af/pedigree_chart.asp?recid=19531875.
This chart erroneously gives William Brashear (m. Sarah Cox) as parents of
Henry Brashears/Breshears, b. c1769, prob SC, d. 1828 Lawrence Co, TN (m.
Eleanor ?Hardin). First there are a number of confusions of Williams. The
William Brasher/Brazier who m. Sarah Cox was born in Orange Co, NC, lived
most of his life on Baker's Fork of Reedy River in Greenville Co, SC, next
door to his uncle, Aquilla Brasher/Brazier (See A BRAZIER/BRASHER SAGA for
documentation). But the William Brashear who is meant in the pedigree chart
lived in Jefferson/Bullitt Co, KY, was killed by Indians in 1781, and was
married to Anne Ray.
This William is definitely NOT the father of Henry Breshears/Brashears.
William left a will dated 1779 (though Anne concealed it until just before
her death in 1805) which named his children at the time, and there is a law
suit "Thomas Brown et al vs. Peter Cummins et al," Bullitt Co, KY, 1806,
which also names them. There is NO Henry among the children:

FAMILY OF WILLIAM BRASHEAR AND ANNE RAY
William and Anne (Ray) Brashear had eight children, the first four probably
born in Maryland, the next three in Fayette Co, PA, and the last after they
reached Brashear's Station in Jefferson County, KY (then Virginia).

Children of William and Anne (Ray) Brashear: (re: Will of William Brashear,
18 May 1779; "Thomas Brown et al vs. Peter Cummins et al," Bullitt Co, KY, 1806)
2. 7-1. *Sarah "Sally" Brashear, b. c1761, d. 1849; m. Elijah Whitaker, b.
1766, d. 1840. Elijah was a Lieutenant of Militia and s/o John Whitaker,
the Baptist Minister who performed so very many marriages in frontier Kentucky.
3. 7-2. *Nicholas Ray Brashear, b. ca. Oct 1762, murdered 1803 on the
Natchez Trace, near Duck River, TN; m. 9 Aug 1787, Martha Simmons,
4. 7-3. Anne Brashear, b. ?1764; d. between 1779 and 1782
5. 7-4. Nancy Brashear, b. c1766/7 (17 or 18 years old in 1784, per Benjamin
Ray's testimony); m.1. 26 Aug 1787, Housan Clifton, (Jefferson Co Marr. Reg.
Book 1, p.6, "dau of Wm. Brashear, by John Whitaker, Minister"). Housan
Clifton was killed by Indians, in 1793, and Nancy m.2. 7 Aug 1795, Robert
Scott, (see also Peter Cummins's testimony)
6. 7-5. *William Brashear Jr, b. c1768, (William Samuel Brashear is named as
a white taxable over 21 in household of Nicholas Brashear, Jefferson Co Tax
list, 1789, and he is on the lists as a head of household for 1792, 1794,
1795. He was in Bullitt County in 1806 when the Sheriff served a summons on
him. This and his age make it impossible for him to be the William Brashear
in Spartanburg, SC, from 1785 to 1829.)
7. 7-6. *Joseph Brashear, b. 26 Sep 1770, Brownsville, PA, d. 26 Jul 1856,
Louisville, KY; m.1. 12 Apr 1796, Elizabeth Cummins, (Washington Co, KY
Marr. Rec), d/o Peter Cummins; m.2. Charlotte Wheeler, (See separate chapter.)
8. 7-7. Elizabeth "Betsy" Brashear, m. 8 Sep 1792, (Nelson Co, KY Marr
Bonds, p.92), Reason Howard, d. bef 11 Jul 1831
9. 7-8. Jemima Brashear, b. 1779 (age 3, in 1782, when Peter Cummins m. Anne
(Ray) Brashear, per Cummins's testimony; William's will, dated 18 May 1779,
does not mention her; so she was apparently born after he signed it); m. 22
Nov 1802, Thomas Brown Jr, (Breckenridge Co Marriages, 1799-1891, by Baldwin
Clifton; bondsmen: Thomas Brown and John Brown; license co-signed by Ephriam
Cummins and John Brown, "with consent of Mrs. Cummins" i.e. Anne (Ray)
Brashear-Cummins.)

(With the exception of Anne, who d. young, these children correspond to a
list of Settlers at Brashear's Station in Filson Club Qty, v.30, #3, Jul
1956.) Daughters Anne and Nancy are both named in William's Will; so they
are not the same person. There were six heirs in 1806, Nicholas and Anne
having died.

Further, the same pedigree chart erroneously claims that William (m. Anne
Ray) was a s/o Joseph Brashears, b. 1722, Prince George's Co, MD, who was
s/o Samuel Brashear Jr and Elizabeth Brashear. Again, there is a confusion
of people; there were two Josephs, and they weren't even in the same places
at anywhere near the same times, as these records would indicate:
Joseph Brashear, b. 15 Jan 1722, s/o Sam Jr and Eliza, apparently lived his
whole life in PGCo. He's obviously not the Joseph Brashears who speculated
in land in the 1770s in KY, and who died in Fayette Co, PA, in 1778:
1772, 15 Jan: Joseph inherited "Brashears Industry" from father. (PGCo
Wills, Book 39, p.604)
1774, 27 May: Joseph inherited 1 negro and stock from mother; extr of
mother's will (PGCo Wills, Book 40, p.329)
not in special 1776 Census of PGCo.
1777, 30 Jul: deed Jeremiah Brashears to Joseph Brashears, [PGCo Land
Records, Book CC#2, p.372-3; MSA C1237 MDHR 5725, 1/20/6/26; FHL film 0014254]
1777, Joseph Brashears apptd Overseer of PGCo Highways.
1780, 21 Feb: deed, Jeremiah Belt to Joseph Brashears, for £1330, two
tracts of 62.5 acres, called "Good Luck" and "Addition to Good Luck," on
Beaver Dam branch of Western Branch of Patuxent River. [PGCo Land Records,
Book FF#1, p.5-6; MSA C1237 MDHR 5726, 1/20/6/27; FHL film 0014255]
1783, 25 Mar: Joseph Brashears apptd to PGCo Grand Jury.
1785, 7 May: Inventory of estate filed, PGCo, MD, by admrx, Mary Brashear
[?his sister or wife?] (Book ST#2, p.219). Mary apparently died before the
estate was closed.
1789, 25 May: Accounts in estate filed by Alexander Duvall, admr, (Book
ST#2, p.25); further accounts filed by Alex Duvall, 13 Mar 1795 (Book ST#3,
p.90). Alexander Duvall was a Baltimore Lawyer.

Now, Joseph Brashears who speculated in land in the 1770s in KY died in
Fayette Co, PA, in 1778, and William Brashear(s) (m. Anne Ray) was his
executor. This Joseph had no children of record; his brother William
Brashears (m. Anne Ray) was his heir.
Many people have jumped to the conclusion that Joseph was William's father,
partly because of Virginia Land Office Warrant #131, which was issued to
William as a result of Joseph's prospecting for land in central Kentucky
(then considered part of Virginia): "To the principal surveyor of any county
within the commonwealth of Virginia, this is your warrant to survey and lay
off in one or more surveys for William Brashear, heir at law to Joseph
Brashear, his heirs and assigns, the quantity of one thousand acres. /s/
Starr D.N. L. O. March 4, 1780, Jefferson County, Virginia." (VA Surveys
and Grants, 1774-1791).
Joseph Brashear, brother of William, seems to have been a professional land
speculator. From various depositions concerning land boundaries in
Kentucky, it would appear that he headed a party of locators, sometimes
called Joseph Brashears & Company. These locators would find a good tract
of land, "improve" it by marking a few trees (cutting a ring through the
bark near the base to deaden the tree) and starting a cabin, usually left at
three or four logs high. This was sufficient to claim the land under the
Virginia land laws of the time.
He made at least five such claims in Bullitt County alone: One on Salt
River at the buffalo crossing (I think this is the site of Brashear's
Station); one on Cedar Creek, a branch of Floyd's Fork, where he built a
cabin which he sold to a man named Kelly, i.e. "Kelly's Cabin" (caution:
there are two Cedar Creeks, one south of Salt River, one on Floyd's Fork,
north of Salt River); another claim was on the buffalo trace between Blue
Lick and the buffalo ford of Floyd's Fork (about five miles west of
Brashear's Station; this was "Joseph Brashear's burned cabin"); one opposite
Fort Nonsense on Salt River; one at the Sinking Spring on the road from
Bullitt's Lick to Louisville. In addition, he seems to have planted such a
claim on Brashear's Creek in present day Spencer/Shelby County, and one on
Simpson's Creek in present-day Nelson County, a claim where the William
Brashear who died in 1789 seems to have lived.
To me, it is quite clear that land-speculator Joseph Brashears and Joseph
Brashears, b. 1722, PGCo, MD, are two quite different Joseph Brashears.
A case heard before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1795 proves that
the William Brashear who m. Anne Ray was brother to the Joseph Brashear who
located land in Kentucky.

Lessee of Thomas Smith, esq
vs.
Bazil Brown
Ejectment for one messuage [sic] and 280 acres of land in Menallen township.
On motion of Mr. J. Woods for the plaintiff, the names of Francis Pursley
and Benjamin Brashiers were struck out of the declaration of the ejectment,
after the jurors were sworn, and the name of Bazil Brown inserted, in lieu
thereof, to make the record conformable to the entry in the Supreme Court
Docket. ...
It appears on the evidence, that William Brashiers settled with his family
on the lands in question in 1769, and lived there several years. His
brother, Joseph Brashiers, who was unmarried, continued with him two or
three years, and assisted him to work the lands. A cabin was built and
about ten acres cleared. Previous thereto, a cabin of four logs was begun
in 1767, by Zachariah Brashiers, and it was then called his improvement, but
neither he nor Joseph Brashiers ever claimed the lands. Two judgements were
obtained in Bedford County against William Brashiers in April term 1773, and
in consequence of writs of fieri facias issued thereon, the premises were
levied on, condemned by inquisition taken at the dwelling house of Thomas
Brown, the brother of the defendant, near the land, and afterwards sold to
the lessor of the plaintiff, at public vendue for 40 pounds, 6 shilling.
The sheriff's deed to him was dated 15 April 1775. On 4 Aug 1784, Mr. Smith
took out a warrant for 280 acres, including William Brashiers' improvement,
interest to commence from 1 Mar 1769, and on 21 Mar 1785, obtained a survey,
but the same was returned in dispute. William Brashiers also claimed a
survey without authority, in 1770, but it did not appear precisely in what
year he quitted the lands.
The defendant [Basil Brown] claimed under a certificate of three
commissioners, appointed under a law of Virginia, passed 3 May 1779, to
adjust the claims of the settlers, which declared him entitled, as assignee
of William Brashiers, to 400 acres in Yohiogeney county, to include his
settlement in 1770, which was regularly entered in the office of the county
surveyor on 22 Dec 1779. But the transfer from William Brashiers to him was
not produced, nor any account given of it. A survey was afterwards made for
the defendant, on 21 Mar 1785, and returned in dispute. The survey was
returned on another certificate by mistake, but of this no advantage was
taken. The defendant and his tenants worked the lands since William
Brashiers quitted the possession thereof.
It was contended on the part of the defendant [Bazil Brown], that there was
no evidence of Zachariah Brashiers, the first improver, abandoning his
claim; that the improvement of William Brashiers was a mere chattel
interest, not bound by the judgement, and that he probably left the land and
sold his claim before the same was levied on. ...
[Smith was ask to prove that he possessed the lands at the time of the
judgment. Bazil was asked to produce an assignment from William Brashiers
to himself, or call witnesses if the transaction were merely oral, but Bazil
was unable to do so. The Chief Justice saw this as "strong evidence that
the defendant does not wish to play a fair game." Zachariah's laying four
logs on the ground was not considered a legitimate claim to the land, though
William's building a cabin, clearing ten acres, and living there a number of
years was acknowledged as fulfilling the Virginia law regarding settlement:
that one gained a right by "the making of a crop of corn, or residence on
the lands for one year before 1 Jan 1778."
The Court decided that William had abandoned the land, that Bazil Brown had
not come forth with any objection at the time the land was seized and sold
at Sheriff's sale, although it was all done at his brother's house, and that
the circumstances of the case appeared that Smith had a legitimate claim.
Verdict was for the plaintiff, Thomas Smith.] (from Cases Heard by the
Supreme Court of Pennsylvania: At Nisi Prius, at Uniontown, May Assizes,
1795, before McKean, Chief Justice, and Yeates. Text of the case reprinted
in Arzella Brashear Spear's Newsletter, Br(e)ashe(a)r(s) Family Branches
[BFB], #54, p.7). The plat map of the grant to Thomas Smith is extant; the
land adjoined Basil Brown, Otho Brashears, Hugh Laughlin, and John Jones,
that is, it is the land where William Brashear and Anne Ray lived in 1769.
It was a mile or so northwest of another grant made to Zachariah Brashear.

Circumstances (but no firm documents) strongly suggest to me that William
Brashears (m. Anne Ray), his brother Joseph, and the Zachariah associated
with them (as well as others), were sons of William Brashears and Sarah
Wallingsford, of PGCo, MD. This William Brashears of PGCo was s/o Benjamin
Brashears Sr and Mary Jones, as is proven by various depositions concerning
land boundaries in PGCo. (For the documents, see Chap 10 in "The First 200
Years of Brashear(s) in America.") William Brashear(s) and Sarah
Wallingsford lived on a 44-acre plot of land in PGCo called "Major's Lott,"
until 1762, when they lost the land to debt, mortgaged it, then sold out and
disappeared from Maryland records.
William Brashears (m. Sarah Wallingsford) is on land adjoining the land of
William Brashears (m. Anne Ray) in Fayette Co, PA, in 1769; then on land
originally staked out by Joseph and Zachariah Brashears on Sugartree Run, a
branch of Chartiers Creek in Washington Co, PA. William's neighbors there
married some of his daughters, and they later appear in Jefferson, Bullitt,
and Nelson Co, KY. It seems (no proof) that this is the William Brashears Sr
who made his will and died in 1789 in Jefferson Co, KY, naming "the rest of
my children," Samuel Mason Brashears (extr), and two minor daughters,
MaryAnn and Elizabeth. He mentions land purchased from Nicholas Ray
Brashears, s/o William Brashears and Anne Ray. This land is apparently the
land where Brashear's Station stood.
I have about 40-50 pages of documents supporting these assertions; these
documents and discussion of them are scheduled to appear in vol 4 of A
BRASHEAR(S) FAMILY HISTORY, "Brashears Families of the Ohio Valley."
In the meantime, can't we please zapp those errors, to keep them from
proliferating?
Cheers,

1775-77...Joseph BROSHEAR died near Wheeling West Va., who was close
relative of WILLIAM BROSHEAR father of NANCY PHELPS ?], THOMAS BROSHEAR [Bro of ROBERT?] who died at Foreman's defeat. So - and who is the ZACHARIAH and BENJAMIN who appears with them-PRESUMABLY ALL BROTHERS AND SONS of William who married Calven ?..

1829...A man named JOSEPH BURGHER [sic BURCHIER - keep in mind the Kentucky historians stress that phonetically SH; GH; CH;and TCH are pronounced "CH" as in "CHIN".], settled on the BIG BARREN PLAINS some where along the BIG BARREN RIVER in KENTUCKY. This river snakes across the counties of WARREN and BARREN, just south of Greenriver KY. He made his will. [Wills BK D, pg 14, Barren Co. KY] He named his wife MARY; and
sons CHARLES; WILLIAM; JOHN and JOSEPH - [Joseph who was deceased]. Daughters RACHAL; ELIZABETH; POLLY; and MAGDELIN. He made reference to his brother BENJAMIN BURGHER of Virginia who had willed his estate to JOSEPH'S sons CHARLES and WILLIAM. Could this have something to do with
the Supreme Court Case before McKean that struck out BENJAMIN and replaced it with WILLIAM BRASHEAR [associate of the THOMAS BROWN heirs?]. Evidently Joseph's brother in Virginia, left his property to
JOSEPH'S [1] children, specifically WILLIAM and CHARLES. NOW... what-if this JOSEPH [1] was still alive as late as 1829 and he was watching out for the heirs of his son JOSEPH'S [2-died 1778] children? [couldn't be Joseph born 1722 - right?].
...What if JOSEPH [2] was the JOSEPH that died in 1777- near Wheeling.
...What if this is the JOSEPH who is mentioned as having Rev. War
service from Pittsylvania Co., Va. [Wataugua Settlement]. This is the
area settled by Thomas WALKER in the mid 1750s.
...A JOSEPH BURGHER sic is mentioned as in and out of Mechlenburg Co. NC. [This is the Burke Co., NC., Settlements - [ insert this later]
...What if CHARLES (probably in Greenbriar Co.,) remained in VIRGINIA as heir - but- WILLIAM ventured on into Kentucky.
...What if CHARLES was the CHARLES BRESHER with claim to the Rev. War lands in Kentucky/Tennessee. That was 15,000 acres in Hardin County
Kentucky [That isn't chicken feed!]. No wonder there were so many heirs. ...What if the Pou-pourri of Breshears in Hardin/Grayson County were
descended from these three brothers.
1761ish...Joseph BOSHIER, registered in an election pol taken by GEO. MERCER in Fredrick Co. MD. There were 2 JOSEPH BROSHIERS who registered that year. The second is on a list by GEO. WASHINGTON.
The JOSEPH JR. may be the one who died in 1777 with heirs CHARLES & WILLIAM.
1790ish...The Augusta County VA. Cronicles by "CHALKLY", document JOSEPH BOUGHER - He was in and out of the courts [insert here].
Would it have been possible that this is the JOSEPH BURGHER sic mentioned above? Maybe this is JOSEPH BROSHEAR who died in 1777 with William administering the will?
=======================================================================================
There is also a JOSEPH BURGESS mentioned in the records of MD/VA. Along
the migration path of my ancestors is a Col. JOSEPH BURGESS who went to
the area in VA., that was PITTSYLVANIA Co., VA [Colonial]. In the same area as WILLIAM BRATCHER/BRADSHAW of Henrico Co., VA.

1783ish...A WILLIAM BURGESS signed as witness for THOMAS BRASSHEAR in Greenville SC.- must be a relative?

1799ish...The clan which included WILLIAM BURGESS was in the East Tennessee area [See Arch. Basham doc. "Welding Links" -1992 ed]

1824ish...HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS referred to the land in Lawrenceburg TN as being a portion of that granted to JOSEPH BURGESS [BURGHER-]. I'm wondering if this is a maternal forefather or a corruption of the name BRASHER sic?

*** It is not known if there is a connection between JOSEPH BURGHER and JOSEPH BROSHIER - I'm just speculating here ***

The siblings linked below were taken from the "WILL", in Barren Co., KY., where John Breshears b 1793 met Neoma HOGG. John's father Henry is the one who mentioned Joseph Burgess in the LAwrenceburg TN records.

74. William Breashear (William (Brasur) Brasier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born before 1740 in of, Henrico Co, VA.

Nelson Co KY deposition of Sam Osborn: Statem't of persons at COX"S FORT
- mentions Brashear at fort.

1780-81...WILLIAM BRASHEARS, the "surveyor," was in Jefferson Co., KY,
and marked an "Allum" tree with W.B. The claim was for 800 acres on Floyds Creek, 7-8 miles from it's mouth. John MOORE was there also. [Jeff, Co. Records- Min. Bk 4].

1783...Capt. William JOHNSON'S muster, N-YR Volunteers, commanded by Geo Turnbull, Foster's Meadows N-Yr., 16 Jan: WILLIAM BRADSHAW on duty.William Johnson; The Morgans; James Wade and William Brazier (sic Bradshaw/Bracher), took land in old Wake Co., NC.

The JAQUES family records of Alberta Canada, placed WILLIAM and SARAH
COX BRESHEAR to Bullitt Co., Kentucky, and give descendancy through
Nancy Brashears who married Anthony Phelps. The old fellow who wrote his
will and died 1789, is apparently their ancestor. The will indicates he
was "very old and infirmed", so probably in his upward 80s or thr-abts,
which brings to mind the question of the age of William and Sarah Cox Brashears.

Tradition places a William born 1740 from Fauquier Co VA. He apparently
removed via Surry Co., NC., with descendants to Spartenburg Co. SC. This
is the land granted up in the North Western corner of Spartenburg Co.,
bounded by the "Old Indian Line". William b 1760, and Mary CLAYTON, son
of WILLIAM BRASHEAR, from Fauquier Co., VA., born about 1740, have
descendants, children of Major D. Breshears, and his wife Fanny, who
still live on Motlow Creek, in that area of South Carolina.

A Jacob SHIVELY was also with that colony. John HARDIN [ forefather of GH]
was a close associate of Jacob SHIVELY. The memoirs [by Kirkham] of
the HARDINS in KY., mentions Jacob SHIVELY, but not BRASHERE. SHIVELY'S
memoirs mention BRASHERE, but not HARDIN. The map by FILSON gives the
name of "BRASHERE" to BRASHEAR Station in KY.

1777..William BRASHEAR Came to Wheeling, Ohio CO., on the Ohio River,
with Andrew SWEARINGEN-also a Prather descendant, as documented by Draper, MSS.,4ZZ21.
The "TBBF", gives an account of "an older William BRASHEAR", who lived in Fayette Co., PA., who would be older than the William, who married Ann RAY. The SWEARINGENS are relatives to the Brashears and are found in the Spartenburg SC., records and in the Bullitt Co., Kentucky records.
[Family records of Orin Swearingen, College Station TX., believe their
anc. came from around Wash., DC.-That is where the Matapony River is}

1781?...Nancy Brashears, the daughter of William and Sarah COX
BREASHEARS [BRAZER], gives her birth place as "PENNY" [PA.], not PERRY
Co., PA. as formerly thought, [proven - Robert Mathers, index of Hardin
Co., KY], who married Anthony Phelps, documents the family as
"BROSHEARS" [maiden name]. The records published by PA., Archives with
service for the PA. 8th regiment, give both Thomas and Zachariah
BRASHEAR, the same persons as seen in the Supreme Court Case before
Chief Justice McKEEN, as spelling their name with the "O", viz:
BOSHEARS, in the claims for invalid compensations from service in PA.
...So it follows, the PA records for William "BREASHEARS" of Virginia,
are probably spelled "BROSHEARS", in PA, as Nancy indicated in her
deposition in KY, then reverted to the BRASHEAR sic spelling under the
VA., Court system.

1787...Minutes from the Board of Property, Western PA- Pub by Western Biographical Ass., Pitts. PA., 1923- pg 518: At a meeting of the Surveyor Gen., 5 Mar 1787 - HAMILTON vs BRASHIERS: Hamilton sending representation that this case is in law, it being postponed. [A court record in Ireland has a Brazier Estate v Hamilton-need this-may be same people - GH].

1790...Thomas HAMILTON: Letter informing that he being convinced of the priority of Wm Brashier's Title-and desiring that the CAVEAT entered by him might be dismissed, the same is dismissed accordingly. [PA. Arch. 3rd series, Vol1, pg 518,687]

1800...The Surry Co., NC. William BRAZIER/BRADSHAW who was affiliated
with KEENS, was also affiliated with Thomas BREWER, and that brings us
back to William BESHAR/ BASHAW, of Fauquier Co., VA. [keeping in mind,
Fauquier Co., was the northern most out reach of the "Old Rappahannock
County", which registered all colonials on the Rappahannock Ri.
watershed-also the Matapony river].

Thomas BREWER was closely allied to the descendants of Thomas BASHAW
[1], & son WILLIAM [2], who variously spelled the name as Bashaw/Bashan
[M] -Bradshawe and BESHAR, in the counties that were divided out of ''Old Rappahannock Co." VA, viz: Lancaster; Westmoreland; Prince William; Spotsylvania and later Orange County VA.

to " Pittsylvania" Co., VA, from "Old Orange" CO., VA, into the south of

migrating along with other families found on Georgene's Pedigree.

*** The children of William Breashear who are marked with Breshear*, are circumstantial connections only. He could be father or protector of his brother's heirs [nephews]. It appears there are other heirs also viz:
Balach; White; Stevens; Bashams; Connors? Brazeals? and undoubtedly others ***

1783...William BRADSHAW [alias BRAZIER], was granted a land warrant from
NC., for Continental line service in Middle TN. [BK. "NC land grants in Tennessee"]. No William BRASHEAR mentioned.

1818-1824... Many Cumberland River (KY) Settlers who were BRADSHAW/ BRATCHER/ BRACHER heirs appear in Warren Co., TN., about 1818 with land grants. They must be heirs in right of the old William Breashear d 1789 of KY.

1824... A widow, Elizabeth BESHEAR, [correct spelling], is given a deed to her land in WARREN CO. TN., abt 1824, by WILLIAM, J [ John or James?], LABAN, and ELIJAH BESHEAR (these heirs, SIGNING IN SAME MANNER, are seen also in the deeds of Spartenburg. SC). Is this elderly Elizabeth Brashear who is later living with HENRY and JOHN Brashear in Lawrenceburg TN. Elizabeth is probably the ELIZABETH who is shown on the WARREN CO., TN., 1800 census as ELIZABETH BRATCHER (SIC BESHEAR). The clan near her appear to be those of record in Lawrence Co. TN.

William married Sarah Cox daughter of William Cox in 1760 in of Fauquier, VA. Sarah died after 1783 in of, Bullitt, Ky.

17??...Archibald Beshaw, (correct spelling) who is found in Fauquier County Virginia and is mentioned in the will of DR. RICHARD HALL, must be an heir of James BASHAW. A Dr. Richard Hall first lived in Worchester Co., MD. 1784...Archibald was on the Tax lists for Bedford County Virginia. 1799...Removed across Tennessee and into Lincoln County Tennessee where
he had a land grant. [insert grant here].

There are BASHAMS: ALEXANDER; NATHAN; ROBERT; DRURY; RICHARD; JAMES and
others, who are are clearly cross referenced as "BRASHER", in the early land deeds of Lawrence Co., TN. The BRASHEARS clan from Lincoln Co., who
settled Lawrence Co.,TN., about 1820, viz: HENRY; JOHN; JESSE; JAMES;
THOMAS and SAMUEL were close allies of the BASHAM family. The census/tax
lists [that this researcher has ], do not record BASHAMS. It appears the
above men reverted to the BRASHER/BROSHER surname after receiving the
land.

1833... ALEXANDER BRASHER and his wife MARGARET BRESHEAR, the daughter
of HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEAR, are known cousins. A family bible in
possessionn of DELLA SCOTT, descendant of NATHAN BRASHER, records HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS'S grandson JOHN W. BRESHEAR and wife LUCY. This
helps establish a close alliance between the two families.

1817...The land deeds for Lawrence Co., TN., and the above mentioned
people give ROBERT BRASHER alias BASHAM; NATHAN BASHAM alias BRASHER;
and DRURY BASHAM who's mother was ELIZABETH BRASHEARS, seen in the deeds
index as alias BRASHEAR . [[[ This ROBERT BRASHER was deceased by 1832
as seen in Inventories, Wills, Sale Bills, Settlements for the State of
TN, Lawrence County 3rd Jan., Court term.]]]. At that time he was termed guardian of WILLIAM BRASHEAR'S HEIR - SGN: ROBERT BRASHER desceased.

GEDWRAP suggests checking notes for hanging indents.

William and Sarah had the following children:

+ 106 M i William Breashear
107 M ii Samuel Mason Breashear was born about 1756 in of Beaver Co, VA.

Could this be SAMUEL BRACHER with NC service in the Revolution? A Samuel transfered land to William P. Brazier in Lawrence Co., TN deeds index, pg 404 Bk M. A son of William P Brashears, William C. was executor of his estate. This must be William C. who lived in Little Rock Arkansas. He wrote a letter to Phillip Brasher of New York trying to establish his linage (1929).
108 F iii Mary Ann Breashears was born about 1767 in Of Virginia.

Mary Ann was under age 16 when her father's will was written.
Eleazer Thompson was on the 1800 tax list of Bullitt Co., KY..

Mary married (1) Joshua Anderson about 1795 in of, Nelson, Kentucky. Joshua was born about 1768 in Of, , Kentucky.

75. Matthew Brashear (William (Brasur) Brasier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born before 1734 in of, Beaver, PA. He died in 1774 in , of Botecourt, VA.

1783...MATHEW BRAKER # 2500 granted 640 acres, service for 84 months,
NC.
A Descendant, Rev. Wallace Brashears of Alexandria VA and another Paul
Allen of 21 Green Ave. Conn, [22 Jul 1942], said there was a pedigree
chart of Brashears/Richardson lineage which was filed in the New York Genealogical Society. This chart compiled by a Mrs. Richardson was
supposed to prove their lineage to Matthew. Paul Camp a descendant of Christopher C. Brashears - Marsham[3] - Samuel[2] - Matthew [1]-, who corresponded with Memory Lester, and also Ira Brashears of the same
lineage as Paul Camp, felt they descended from Basil "TBS" #31. This
could have been possible since Basil and Sarah WALLINGSFORD, his first
wife, had their first child BENJAMIN in 1729. [Who knows-I'm thinking there is no connection to Basil, but from the Worcester MD, William Brazsier-GH].

* THEORY... A LINEAGE THROUGH WILLIAM BEASOR OF CHESTER/LANCASTER
CO.,PA*

1756...Matthew's son Samuel, was born in Beaver Co., PA. I suspect this
was actually old Cumberland County PA., at that time. This is about the
time that the REDSTONE COLONY from New-Jersey arrived that brought
-?-BRASHERE and PHILLIP SHIVEY (of New Jersey) to the area. Samuel remembered that he had several brothers but could not remember their names. Since he was 16 when he left with Daniel Boone for Kentucky, perhaps he did forget his
family? Since Matthew died in 1774 in Dunmore's war, maybe the family
fell apart?

1773...Matthew BRACKEN [sic Braker?], was with Capt. Bullett sic at

Cumberland River Colony in Ky., and came from Greene County Tennessee
[old State of Franklin].

Matthew married Mrs. Matthew (Abigail) Brakin before 1750 in of, Beaver, PA.

1785...Evidently the widow of Matthew Brakin was alive in 1785 since she
was listed as receiving a Widows pension from the Commissioners in
Greenbriar Co., VA [later W. VA]. William Bratchey lived on Bratche Run
in GreenBriar Co.

Matthew and Mrs. had the following children:

+ 112 M i Edward Brashears

=======================================================================================
A Sarah is thought to be the sister of Lt. Thomas Brashears of "Foreman's Defeat". A Thomas is proven as being from Hampshire Co., VA. I think we may need to add a sibling Sarah to this list of siblings. Thomas had a brother Robert (will). This Robert is a brother and administrator to Thomas Brashears of Foreman's defeat in 1777. If Robert is the brother in care of the estate of Thomas, then it is probable this Robert (died bef 1818), is the Robert looking after the affairs of the family in Warren and White County Tennessee. In the Court records of Lawrenceburg Tennessee, it is stated that in 1814 one John and Robert Brashier are on the Jury lists.

Robert Brasher (alias Basham) is active in the affairs of the family (court Records of Lawrence Co., TN ) until about 1829. It is indicated he is deceased at that time. This Robert is not to be confused with Robert Samuel Brashears of the same area. This Robert Brasher (not to be confused with son of Robert Samuel Brashears of the same area) is seen as adm for William BASHAM SR.and WILLIAM BRASHEAR'S minor heirs.

It is from this family that the Basham and Bashaw connection comes into play. Elizabeth, wife of Drury Basham Drury sometimes seen as Brashears in the Court Records), must be the sister of Henry Alexander Breshears (she is claimed by the Robert Samuel Lineage).

This might explain the cousinship claimed in the families of Henry Alexander and his son-in-law Alexander Breshears and the person who was the Robert(died before 1832) who played so prominent a part in their affairs.

Note...If Lawrence Brasher was married to Elizabeth Black then Henry, who Hans Black gave P/Att. for, from Christian County KY back to Spartenburg, must be this Henry. This could be the HENRY BRASHEAR who received the large land grant on Big Barren River in KY., in right of John Brashier (b. 1735), who may have been deceased leaving orphans?

*** THOMAS BRASHEARS OF WARREN/WHITE COUNTY TENNESSEE-THEORY ***

Thomas above),must be the Thomas who is seen with THOMAS ETHERIDGE (from
Norfolk Co., VA) in the early Tennessee records. Thomas Brashear died in Warren County leaving his wife Amie [Miller?]. A Thomas Etheridge settled in WEAKLY COUNTY TENNESSEE. [Looking for the THOMAS BRASHEAR of White Co., TN., who appears with the rest of the clan along with HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS & THO.ETHERIDGE This could be him. Thomas's wife AMIE is named in his will of Warren Co., TN. (insert). There is an Amie Miller named in her mother's will
in Maury Co TN. Connection to THOMAS] ? - NO PROOF.

1866...Tishomingo Co.Mississippi (MS Probate records, under misc., Bk 9, pg 522): Amelia BOSHEARS, widow of THOMAS BOSHEARS died Sep 1866. 2 minor children Jane P. Boshears & Thomas J. BOSHEARS. The land a section, incumbered by deed of trust & small personal property - assetts due.
Sooooo - is this the clan from Warren/White Co. TN? Via Lawrenceburg Tennessee? Thomas Brashear is Anna Locke's Mississippi documentation. See her research from Corinth MISS where she found her Berry and Anna BRESHEARS before removal to Arkansas (ID602).

There was a Thomas J. Brasher in Talladega Co. AL, in 1850, son of James who had a brother Thomas Brasher - I'm wondering if there might be a connection here - GH ? This could be James M. Brasher who went to Angelina Co., TX.

John married Elizabeth Crooper or Cooper daughter of William Crooper (Cooper) about 1764 in pro, Cumberland, North Carolina. Elizabeth was born in , Worcester, Maryland. She died in pro Lawrence, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.

The land the Coopers owened in Worcester Co., MD., may have reverted to John & Elizabeth . (XCK the Maryland census (1787) records for a Widow Elizabeth and children (Not named) of H/H #11-might be them?
HOGG QUARTER: Worcester Co., MD, pg 302, by Dryden.
1802 ...Bartholomew SLATTERLY willed his son Bartholomew (wife Elizabeth) 12 May 1806 Elizabeth SLATTERLT widow of Bartholomew sold to John CROPPER 11 3/4 acres that William CROPPER deeded to her.
1809 ...On 17 May, John BRAZIER, with wife Elizabeth Brazier sold to Edward Hammond that William CROPPER granted his DAUGHTER Elizabeth (Cropper) Slatterly now wife of John Brazier 100 acres.

This may be the John BRAZIER we are looking for as near relative or father of Henry Alexadnder Breshears of Lawrenceburg Co., TN. Since Henry and William were close allies of The Claytons then this would give both Clayton connections. We could then explain Henry's living near a William Brazier and brother William Brazier of Spartenburg Co., SC., along with the Willoam CLAYTONS.

John and Elizabeth had the following children:

115 M i Lawrence Brashier was born about 1760 in pro NC. He died in Pro Christian, KY. The parent relationship has been challenged.

It has been conceeded that Lawrence Brashier who moved to KY is the son of a John ...right? Are the children in H/H 99 below the descendant of John b 1699?
I guess it pays to go back and relook! Here are some things I have observed from the "AIS". (Accelerated Census System)
1699...William of "North Gunpowder Hundred, Maryland, in 1699, was registered as "BRAYSIER" .
1703...William of "Gunpowder Hundred Maryland" was registered as "BRAYSON (r)?

Others called Brayson (r) in Edgefield Co., SC

In looking for the children of John descendant of John b 1699, I think John Brashear of Edgefield/Pendleton Co., is the heir of John, the son of William & Elizabeth Clayton Brazier, living close to William Brazier b 1740, of Edgefield.

Haw River flows across the northern part of GUILIFORD CO., then bends
south and more or less splits present day Alamance Co., diagonally from north-west to south-east, before flowing into CHATHAM CO NC. On the same

Sarah and her husband DR. John PYLE JR. lived in NC.,SC, and KY.

Sarah married John Pyle Jr. son of John Pyle Dr And Col and Sarah Baldwin about 1765 in Chatham Co., PA.. John was born in 1746 in Chester Co., PA.. He died in 1818.

The Pyles are from Chester County Pennsylvania and removed to NC along
with the Brashears, Cox and Blacks.

John and Sarah had the following children:

+ 130 M i William Pyle

91. James Brashear (Thomas Brashier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born about 1753 in , , MD. He died in 1835 in , Talladega, AL.

1800...James and Sitley (Cethea or Cithea) sold their land in SC,
and removed to Talladega County Ala, in 1834.
1808...James witnessed a will in Franklin Co. GA.
1850...James is on the US Census.
The estate of James Sr. was administered in Taladega Co., AL, which
mentioned Cethea as adm. The adm recites that Cethea and Thomas J.
BRAZIER of Shelby Co., are next of Kin. James not mentioned. [it is
possible this is a Cithea Jr. who married another Brashers - not likely].
A James Hosey applied for Adm. - relationship not known. It is pointed
out that it is strange that Cithea and children are in Shelby Co. and
the James Sr. is residing in Talladega.

James married Sitley Cox daughter of William Cox about 1789 in , Greenville, South Carolina. Sitley was born about 1748 in , , North Carolina. She died in of, Talladega, AL.

They had the following children:

95. Elijah Brazier (James Mumford Brazier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born about 1750 in of, Worchester, Maryland. He died after 1815 in Cumberland Co, NC.

1812...HASHER'S DISCOVERY (Braziers Discovery?) patented by Elijah Hasher (Elijah Brazier?) for 16 1/2 acres.
Charles Brasher gives 2 marriages for Elijah (1)______(2) Rebekah.

1815...Elijah Brazier was granted the entire JAMES BRAZIER estate by
BARSHEBAL sic?. Cumberland Co., Land-BK: 28, pg 169.
The question is - is this his Grandmother, Barsheba? It could be his
sister relinquishing her share [if he had one], that is doubtful since
it is the "Entire Estate".

1816...ELIZAH W. BRAZIER [GR-SON?] was deeded 200 acres from JAMES
BATTLE, on PARKER CREEK. [BK 30, PG 148]. A family which included AL
[ALEX.?]; ENOCH; and MARTHA BRAZIER were grantees of land to JAMES
BATTLE [JR.?], in 1851.[bk: 50, pg: 168; file 10?-Cumberland Co., NC].

1783...JAMES BRAZIER deeded ELIJAH 100 acres, pg7, on the Cape Fear
River.

Elijah married Mary Stuart about 1779 in Of Fayetteville, Cumberland, North Carolina. Mary was born about 1760 in Of, Cumberland, North Carolina.

They had the following children:

133 F i Sarah Anne Brazier was born about 1780 in of Cumberland, North Carolina.

Updated records by Charles Brashr.
134 F ii Bathsheba Brazier was born about 1785 in of Cumberland, North Carolina.
Bathsheba married John McDougal about 1814 in Of, , North Carolina. John was born about 1782 in Of, , North Carolina.
135 F iii Rebecca Brazier was born about 1787 in of Cumberland, North Carolina. She died before 1850 in Tishomingo, MS..
Rebecca married Richard Smith son of Daniel Smith and Anne Blalock on 17 May 1813 in Cumberland, NC. Richard was born in 1792 in , , North Carolina. He died in 1863 in Farmington, , Mississippi.
136 M iv Elijah Westley Brazier was born about 1788 in Of, , North Carolina.
137 M v William Brazier was born in 1797 in of Cumberland, North Carolina.

96. William Brazier (James Mumford Brazier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ) was born about 1730/1740 in Parker Creek, Cumberland, NC.

Is this the father of LABAN. N. BRAZIER who had parents WILLIAM & SARAH
of Surry Co NC. Lineage of Suzanne Barker 2229 E. Vista Pheonix, AR.

1778...WILLIAM BRAZIER had land warrant # 136, 4 Mar 1778, issued in
Wake Co., NC., adj his own plantation, on both sides REEDY CREEK.
1813...Surry Co., NC., lists his "Will" and heirs.

William married Sarah Horn about 1768 in , Rowan, North Carolina. Sarah died about 1811 in Of, , North Carolina.

They had the following children:

  138 M i Laban N. Brazier was born on 24 Jul 1769 in , Surry, North Carolina.

Is this the right connection for this family? It looks like Laban might
be descended from JAMES brother of WILLIAM? I wonder if the middle name
here could be NATHAN? [This connection as per LDS-GS- Archives- SLC,
Utah]
139 M ii James Brazier Sr was born on 17 Jan 1772 in Surry, NC. He died in Lincoln/Franklin, TN..

Bible records indicate he and brother Elijah moved to TN.

*** This is a CIRCUMSTANTIAL CONNECTION ONLY ***
The Filson Club papers - made mention of one "Crooked Leg Brashears"
" who was an early pioneer to KY.
It is probable this is he or his son. There was a James who died during
the War of 1812. (see "WL" notes abt Zaddock and descendants). It is
probable the James M. Brashears who went with the Royal Colony to what
later became White County Arkansas is a descendant of the old "Crooked
Legged Jim". (Big Question - Is he James Mumford Brazier?).

A James Turney Brashear (son of Ja. M.?) was an early pioneer in Maury Co., TN abt 1790. He is mentioned on the same list as Thomas Brashear and William Brassieur, undoubtedly the same men found later in Rutherford/ White
CO., and then Lawrence Co., TN.

1830...There are two separate individuals named JAMES in Middle
Tennessee viz: JAMES BASHIER living in Lincoln Co., Enu# 262, WM:
1100101 WF: 1322001 and JAMES BRAZIER in Lincoln Co.,TN., Enu#181, WM:
000001 WF: 0001011. Others named Brazier are viz: Elijah Brazier in Franklin Co. WM 00012001 WF: 001100001 and Jacob Brazier of Dickson Co. WM: 000001
WF: 0001011 [Jacob son of William of Dickson Co.?].

If ALEXANDER BRASHEARS was a literal cousin of his wife Margaret
BRASHEARS, daughter of HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS, he would have had to
be a son of the brother of HENRY, [I believe it to be JAMES]. How ever
the same relationship works if a sister was his mother. DRURY BASHAM
married ELIZABETH BRASHEARS who may be a sister (or a widow of a brother?) of HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS. [See BASHAM connection].

1830...Anna Locke notes: In Loudes Co., near Pontatoc Co., Mississippi
is a JAMES BASHEAR. This is near where ROBERT TURNER BRASHEAR is found
about 1810. [Connection not established to any of above- GH].

1830...James BASHIER, a man over 60 years of age was still residing in
Warren Co., TN [Middle TN Census]. Since that is the area that the clan
[Heirs] in Lawrenceburg were located in pre 1820, it is probable this is
the older pioneer [son of JMB], who remained on the original land when the younger generation removed south after the Indian Lands were opened to settle. William Breshear and John Breshear were still located in Lawrenceburg
, Lawrence Co., TN area, in 1830.

Interestingly, the younger men who removed to Lawrence Co., TN are not
listed in the MIddle TN State Census Book. [insert doc- here]. James; Elyjah and Jacob Brazier son of William from Dickson Co TN are listed as separate individuals in Lincoln Co., in 1830.

1819-1871...James Boshear's deed to Leonard Hartwick [G279 - Law. Co.]

The Forbes Tax list for abt 1819 lists the Henry Alexander Breshears/
Brashers and others as Boshears. This is the spelling that came out of
PA.

It is the oppinion of this researcher that ALEXANDER BRESHEARS is the
probable son of a James or the older Alex Brazer who was in Livingston County KY, in 1803.
        James married Mrs. Brashear.

Jane is thought to be a TURNER - no evidence.
+ 140 M iii William Brazier
141 M iv Elijah Brazier was born about 1773 in , Surry, North Carolina. He died in Lived Franklin C, TN..

144 F vii Polly Brazier was born about 1779 in , Surry, North Carolina.
        Polly married Kerr about 1800.

97. John Brazier (James Mumford Brazier , William Brashur or Bradshaw , William Bradshawe , William (Burcher) Bezer , Edward Burcher , Edward ).

This John is named in JAMES BRAZIER'S will.

He had the following children:
