The revised letter of introduction for the Ireland List - effective September 19, 2001:

PLEASE READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY AND SAVE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

Have you seen the IRELAND LIST WEB SITE?

Dia dhuit agus failte! Hello and welcome!

My name is Deborah, Gobnait in the Irish. I am the administrator and facilitator for the IRELAND News List.

Thanks to Rootsweb (primarily staffed by volunteers), the miracle of modern technology and the kindness of the human heart, many family connections have been made via genealogy email lists. Genealogy has in fact become one of the world's favorite pastimes, a hobby and passion enjoyed by many millions people of all ages, nationalities and background. The search for where we come from, more importantly WHO we come from, seems to cross all class, age and ethnic backgrounds.

The IRELAND email list is aimed primarily at helping people with Irish ancestors. We are researching our family histories, curious to learn more about all things of Ireland, and eager to share a love for our heritage. Our list includes approximately 800 ancestor searchers, lovers of Ireland from all over the world. IRELAND-L is different from most other genealogy lists, more than 'who, where and when'. We enjoy diverse discussions which allow us to share information on genealogy, but also about all aspects of Irish history, folklore, poetry, literature and all things of Ireland. This in turn gives us a better understanding for the circumstances of our ancestors lives and our connection to Ireland, and a better understanding of ourselves as well.

De nobis fabula narratur, their story is our story.

Sadly, as the Americans and the world mourn, we have been forever altered by uniquely tragic events of September 11, 2001. The Ireland List has somewhat changed to meet the new needs of subscribers. Discussion topics on the Ireland List have been expanded. Discussions will now include the attack on American soil, a brutal attack which was really aimed at all civilised people everywhere in the world. A despicable crime against all humanity.

Subscribers are now encouraged to share information and opinions on these world events, and also to comfort one another through the challenging and difficult days ahead of us. Of course, as with all other discussions on the Ireland List, these conversations should always consider the gentle hearts in our midst. Keep arguments and complaints off list please. If you have a concern or question please do not hesitate to contact me at any time:

THE LIST RULES (sorry but there have to be a few! :-)

1) The most important list rule of all: NO FLAMING ALLOWED. Rude or insulting behavior will NOT, repeat NOT, be tolerated, respect and kindness are a must. A courteous, patient and tolerant manner is the very best way to communicate with anyone! For the comfort and consideration of our more gentle-hearted subscribers please respect this most important list rule.

Complaints or suggestions regarding the list should be sent DIRECTLY to Romilly@home.com for consideration. If you have an objection to a thread or topic on the list PLEASE do not notify the entire list. Please just block the thread. It is best to take a deep breath or sleep on it before replying in anger to anyone, even off list. It is helpful to be certain you understand the intention of a discussion before jumping to any conclusions. In this way our conversations will be productive instead of spiteful or mean-spirited.

2) If you need to unsubscribe. Send a message to

IRELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com

for Mail Mode or:

IRELAND-D-request@rootsweb.com for Digest Mode

Type UNSUBSCRIBE in UPPERCASE LETTERS in the subject line of your email and no additional text. (if you are ill or have a family emergency which does not allow you the energy to manage this list request please contact me and I will take care of unsubscribing you from the list)

3) How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference(for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to IRELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com. for mail mode to:

IRELAND-D-request@rootsweb.com

for digest mode.

4) How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "UNSUBSCRIBE" to:

IRELAND-L-request@rootsweb.com

to discontinue mail mode.

Second, send the command "SUBSCRIBE" to:

IRELAND-D-request@rootsweb.com

to start receiving digests.

5) How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again.

6) If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to:

IRELAND-L@rootsweb.com.
It will then be sent (through Rootsweb) to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both.

7) Please keep a copy of this notice for future reference.

8) Don't be shy. Post your interests as soon as you feel comfortable, post them often.

9) I can not stress enough, new people are the life-blood of any news or discussion list. Ask for help. We all started somewhere, knowing little about genealogy research, or our ancestors, or about news lists and how they work. Ask questions, this is what the list is for, sharing information.

10) HAVE FUN!

Once again, welcome to the IRELAND news list. If you have questions or a problem please don't hesitate to contact me Romilly@attbi.com

Go gcuire Dia an t-ádh ort! Best of luck to you!

Beannachtai agus Siochain,
Blessings and Peace,

Deb

Special Notice
Posting to the Mail List

Please be VERY specific in your subject lines. Henceforth, if your post is specifically genealogy related, (names, dates, places), please type (GEN) in the subject line. You will NOT be rejected from the list if you forget to do this, however this is a way to be respectful of our subscribers who wish to read only genealogy related messages.

Second, when responding to a post from another subscriber, please, please, pretty please - delete unnecessary portions of the previous correspondence.

Third, I would like to begin a new thread, IRISH RECIPES! Please hunt up and send your favorite recipe, Black Pudding is one that has been mentioned to me, and I am hunting one up. However, my mother used to make a delicious spaghetti sauce, and I am going to send it along. It is very unique, just as my mother was unique. I call it Irish Spaghetti Sauce, because it is not at all a typical Italian recipe, and it is VERY delicious. I have another for a very unusual Carrot Cake recipe, guaranteed to win first prize in any bake off or cooking competition!

Along with your recipes, please include your surname interests and the countries you are researching.

I hope this will mend some sore feelings. It is important to accommodate as many subscribers as possible. Hopefully this will prove a worthy exercise. Restraint, tolerance and forgiveness are all admirable qualities. Let us practice each one to their full potential! :-)

Beannachtai agus Siochain,
Deb

Roll Call Status
Revised: 28 February, 2002

Roll Call for the members of the Rootsweb Ireland Mail List and WEB Site began on on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2001. A second Roll Call was called for in the Fall of 2001.

Whenever possible, the names which were submitted to Roll Call in the Fall are being added to the Roll Call Section of this site.

But anyways, let's move on.. ;)

Incase you are unsure of what the intent of the "Roll Call" Section, it is meant to be a place where the Ireland List Members can state a brief amount of information about the Surnames which they are researching. This allows other members to go to the Pages and see the information. Once a member sees a name of interest, he or she can contact the submitter For more information on the subject. Please click on the following link if you are interested in learning more about the Roll Call:

This note is from my young friend Kevin, the little boy with acute diabetes and an avid interest in Ireland; I wrote to you about Kevin a few days ago. I thought some of you might like to see the note he sent to me. I send him Irish information everyday. His mother told me as soon as Kevin finishes his school work he hurries to the computer to do his Irish research. Gracie (Kevin's Mom) hears lovely Irish music on the computer for the rest of the afternoon :-)
