Hi fellow Geanies,
I am feverishly researching my sister-in-law's SCANLAN and BROWN
ancestry. The reason for the rush is that my sister-in-law has recently
been diagnosed with a virulent form of cancer and has only a very short
time to live.
She often talked of researching her ancestry but was always going to do it
'tomorrow'. She is an only child and wants to get
all she can documented for her daughters before she dies. So she is
working on writing her recollections of her own life, her parents,
grandparents, etc., and she has asked me to trace the preceding
generations and origins.
Raelee's great-grandfather was Bernard SCANLAN, by the details on
his death registration in 1885, he was born c1813 at Sligo Ireland the
son of Bernard SCANLAN and Norah HENRY. His father's occupation is
shown as Farmer.
At some time prior to 14th March 1842, Bernard SCANLAN found his way to
Glasgow, Scotland where he married his scottish bride - Margaret BROWN,
born c1820 at Paisley, Scotland.
In c1857, Bernard and Margaret SCANLAN emigrated to Australia where they
first settled in Melbourne where their ninth child, Donald James was
born, and later moved to Belfast (Portaferry) where their last child,
Mary Ann SCANLAN was born on 17th November 1864.
Raelee descends from Mary Ann SCANLAN who married John James MOORE at
West Melbourne in 1880.
Any help with information or pointers on Bernard SCANLAN's origins in
Ireland, or their ship to Australia, would be most
gratefully accepted. And anyone who is researching these families, I
would be delighted to hear from you.
