My Hyde Connections

By Michael W. Caughey

Francis Hyde, my great grandfather, was a farmer who farmed at Ballyaghagan, near Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland. Ballyaghagan is at the rear of Cave Hill, near Mc Art's Fort where a branch of the O'Neills were crowned. He married Ellen Wright, whose father William Wright, farmed at the nearby Squire's Hill, Lower Ballysillan.

Their children included
My grandmother Ellen Wright Hyde born at Lower Ballysillan on 5 July 1878, died on 4 December 1955 in Belfast and is buried in the City Cemetery, Belfast.

Sarah Jane Hyde born 17 August 1866 in Whitehouse, Co. Antrim, Ireland. She married John Doherty. They lived for a period on the Oldpark Road, Belfast.

Isabella Hyde. I think she married ? Spratt. They had at least one son and a daughter. A son was engaged in the milk trade for many years; traded as Spratt & Sons. He lived at 43 Upper Cavehill Road, Belfast.

HYDE de Hyde

As de la Hyde this name was early prominent in Leinster. A leading family of Hyde settled in Co. Kilkenny in the fourteenth century; later the name became prominent in Co. Cork where they were Elizabethan planters after the Desmond rebellion. Douglas Hyde, though born in Co. Roscommon, was of the Co. Cork family.
