John Bernard BRADY was born in 1820 in Ireland. Little has been recorded about his life, save for a few short years after he immigrated and moved to San Antonio, Texas. He appears as a 30 year old single man whose occupation was Clerk on the 1850 Bexar County Census. It was there he met and married Susan D. HINFEY. Following is a transcription of the marriage record on file in the Bexar County Courthouse, San Antonio, TX Vol. B. Page 241 of Marriage Applications.April 2, 1856, Bernard obtained his citizenship when he met all the criteria and took the requisite oath required by the Naturalizaiton Laws. Bexar Co. TX Index to Naturalization papers give Bernard's age as 39. While his age is not shown on the record in the Dist. Minutes when he was granted citizenship, I believe this to be the year he was 39. This places his birth as 1817 rather than 1820 as calculated from the 1850 Federal Census. The 1860 Federal Census indicates he was 42 making his birth year 1818. Any and all of these dates are "suspect" based on who was giving the information.
Bernard and Susan are shown on the 1860 Bexar County Census with their five children. Bernard is listed as a Corn Merchant and other records state he was a grocer working for Daniel Murphy.
