LETTERS

Letter from Isabel Hill Elder her niece Adelaide Brandon Cross, December, 1969

My dear Adelaide,

I hope you & your family have had a good year in spite of the unrest which seems to abound everywhere.

For myself I am well, and comfortably housed and keep myself busy in various ways. I enclose a copy of my latest booklet [1]…it is being translated into the Dutch language. As soon as Christmas is over I am starting another.

I wish I could say the same for the health of my sisters as I can for myself, one in hospital now 18 months, the other more and more crippled with arthritis in her hip, but still, by taxi and train able to travel from Derry to Belfast to spend a day with me at an hotel there once a month, a meeting which we both very much enjoy.

I had these lines of Peter Goward [or Howard] printed on cards for Christmas. I have read his “Life and Letters” and discerned that his mission in life was a John Baptist one.

I am happy to say we have had no disturbances in Bangor. Belfast and Derry saw most of the riots and there were terrible. My dear love and good wishes to you all for Christmas and the New Year.

NOTES:

[1] The Cup of the Last Supper, Isabel Hill Elder (Merch o Lundain Derri), Bangor, Co. Down, H. McGowan & Son, 1969. Aunt Isabel was the wife of Samuel Elder. Samuel Elder was the brother of Josephine Elder Brandon. Isabel and Samuel never had childre. She was a leading light in the British-Israelite (also called the Anglo-Israelite) movement. Her books and pamphlets are still widely read. British-Israelites believe the "Ten Lost Tribes of Israel" settled in Britain and Ireland after their release from captivity in Babylon.
