IV. E -Nels Thompson

1845 - Birth

Nils Torkelson was born 25 June 1845 (another source-29 Jun 1846) in the Kommune of Etne on one of the Indre Tungesvik farms, very likely Flato, where his mother, Guri Nilsdtr, had lived before her marriage to widower, Torkjel Torkjelsson Luren, Indre Tungesvik. Nils was the fifth of six children born to this marriage. Skaneviksoga III , p. 175 states "The census of 1865 relates that they still lived on Flato. Torkjel had become blind...They traveled to America together with their two youngest children [Nils and Guri]. Three children had gone [to America] earlier. Torkjel and Guri went to the vicinity of Morris, Illinois and took the family name of Thompson."

1866 - Immigration to USA

In 1866, the parents, Torkel and Guri, and their two youngest, Nils and Guri (who will take the name Julia), immigrate to America. Three older sisters of Nils and "Julia" had already immigrated, Anna in 1857, Siri and Kristi in 1858. Fornavnsregister Til Skipslistene Bergen-Quebec 1865-73 (First-name-register of Ship-Passengers Bergen to Quebec) gives the following information:

1873-Nels Thompson, Baptismal Sponsor

The West Lisbon Lutheran Church records show that Anne Josephine Thompson, born 9 Nov. 1873 to Torkel & Cecilia Thompson, was baptized 30 Nov. 1873. Nels Thompson, Anne’s uncle, was one of the sponsors.

1873 - Death of Father Torkel

"The father came to Morris, Illinois in 1867, and died in 1873, having been afflicted with loss of sight. The mother survived him until 1882. ." Nels, Guri and their parents have yet to be found in a census for 1870 or 1880. Nor do we know (in 1997) where Torkel (1793-1873) and Guri (1804-82) lived, or their burial place. One assumption is that they lived with Nels in the Chicago-Morris area. Nel’s youngest sister, Guri (who takes the name, Julia), married Stener (Frank) Stanerson, Dec. 1875, in Nevada, IA. They later moved to Emmet County in the Estherville area. There is later correspondence between Julia and her Illinois cousins, but no mention of their parents

Part of the problem is that the last name is not known for sure. Torkel lived too brief a time in the U.S. to become naturalized, and so establish a new name. Norwegian names have three parts, the third being an address or place of residence (often a farm). Nels Torkelson Tungesvik took the Thompson name, as did his older brother, Torkel. Anna, Kristi, and Julia are all referred to as having the maiden name of Thompson. A second problem in finding this foursome (parents and 2 children) is the geographical-political one. Nels bought land in Kendall County (Section 32 of Lisbon Twp) which is located on the southern boundary of Kendall County. Later he bought land just south in Grundy County (Saratoga Twp). Nel’s brother, Torkel Thompson (1840), the author’s great-grandfather, bought land in Grundy County (Nettle Creek Twp.) which shares a north border with Kendall County and a west border with LaSalle County. Then there are Nels’ movement back and forth between Chicago (Cook County) and Grundy and Kendall Counties. Many of the Thompson relatives are buried in either Saratoga Cemetery (Grundy County) or West Lisbon Lutheran Cemetery (Kendall County), ca. 8 miles apart Nels and his son Mansel and his family will later move to Dodge County Minnesota. But both Nels, who died in 1927, and Mansel, who died in 1975, were buried in Chicago.

1874 - Naturalization as US Citizen

Skåneviksoga III, p. 175 states that they settled in the neighborhood of Morris, IL and took the name Thompson. The next verifiable event happened at the Grundy County Court House in Morris, IL. Here before Judge James N. Reading, and Clerk Samil B. Thomas, Niels Thompson, and in the presence of two of Niels’ brothers-in-law, Wier Peterson (married Anna in 1857) and John G. Johnson (married Kristi in 1861), Niels became a citizen. To do this he had to have lived five years, and "to renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and more particularly all allegiance which he may in anywise owe to the Crown of the King of Norway or Sweden." For the positive he solemnly swore to support the Constitution of the United States."

1880 - Nels moves to Chicago

Here Nels worked as a coachman, and later as a motorman for the the electric railroads in the city. He also worked as a janitor in a large apartment building. HEI & HGC, p. 910

"Thompson, Niels, coachman, 72 Park Ave" The Lakeside City Directory 1880, p. 1099

1882 -Nel’s Mother, Guri Dies

1882 Nels Marries Mary Smith

According to HEI & HGC, " In September 1882, Mr. Thompson was married to Mary Smith, born in Denmark, who died October 8, 1888, having been a devoted wife and mother. They had two children: Anna E., who is deceased (as of 1914; nd Mensell." p. 910

1885 Mansel Born

Mansel was born [March 27, 1885] in Lemont, IL This we learn from his marriage license. His parents are listed as Nels Thompson and Mary Hextill. Hextill could well have been her last name in Denmark, and upon coming to the U.S. took the name Smith as HEI & HGC states. There was an earlier child, Anna, who died young. (HEI & HGC. p. 910

1900 Census

Mansel, 15, is a boarder at his uncle Edward and Julia Erickson’s home in the 1900 Census for Grundy County, Saratoga Township (twp.) In 1911, Nels will buy this place.

1907-Mansel Marries Tillie Osmonson

On March 5, 1909, Mansel married Tillie Osmonson at the Ottawa Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Joliet, IL Finding their marriage license gave the first solid information for the Nels & Mary Thompson family. Tillie was the daughter of George Osmondson (-1888) and Mary Ann Nelson Osmondson (1852-1938).

Their first child, Vernon was born in the fall of 1907.

1909-Nel’s Sister, Anna Dies

Anna, Mrs. Weir Peterson, was the first of the Nel’s family to emigrate (1857). Her obituary in the Morris Daily Herald states that Anna died May 24, 1909, having been ill for 17 weeks, finally succumbed to stomach cancer. Besides her immediate family of husband and nine children, survivors included two brothers and two sisters "Nelson Thompson of Chicago, Torkel Thompson of Saratoga, [Kristi - Christine] Mrs. John G. Johnson of Audubon, Iowa, and [Julia] Mrs. Frank Stinnerson of Estherville, Iowa. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon, with services in English at the home at 1 o’clock , and in Norwegian at the Osmonson Church at 2:30 o’clock." In Anna’s husband’s obituary in 1919, the same church is called Hougas (from Haugie). It later becomes Grace Lutheran, located four miles north of Morris on # 47.

1910 Nels Moves to Kendall County

"In 1910 he moved to Kendall County where he bought 80 acres of land. In 1911 he bought 80 acres in Saratoga Township, Grundy County which farm is now operated by his son, Mensell (Mansel)." (HEI &HGC. 1914, p. 910) The number of this transaction is 69316. Book 110, p.587, Grundy County. for sale of E1/2 of SW1/4 Sec. 4, Twp. 34, N Range 7. $16.000. It is interesting that the Grundy County land was purchased from Edward & Julia Peterson Erickson (Nel’s niece), and later inherited by John W. Ostrem (related on the Peterson side).

Baptismal Records For Mansel’s Children - Bethlehem Lutheran, Morris, IL

1909 - Norris Milford Thompson, b. July 2, bapt. Aug. 15; Sponsors: Marshall Osmonson, Mattie Osmonson, Henry Lampson, and Berdine Lampson

1911 - Roy Edward Thompson, b. Dec. 23, 1910, bapt. Mar. 5, 1911; Sponsors: Thomas & Emma Peterson, Silas & Sarah Osmonson

1913 - Burnell Erwin Thompson, b. Aug. 26, bapt. Oct 19; Sponsors: M/M Lyle Osmundson, George Osmundson, Sadie Peterson

Baptismal sponsors are often relatives, and in this case that is true. Marshalll and Silas Osmonson are Tillie’s brother and sister; the other Osmundsons are, no doubt, cousins. Thomas and Sadie Peterson are the children of Nel’s sister, Anna, Mrs. Weir Peterson. Tillie’s father’s name is George, but he died in 1888. What is now Saratoga Cemetery, north of Morris (where many of the Osmondsons are buried), was at first called the Osmonson Cemetery after its land donor, Halvor Osmonson.

1920 Census-Dodge County Minnesota

Mansel Thompson is in the 1912 Morris, IL telephone book, but after the sale of the Grundy County land in 1915, Nels and his son, Mansel seem to fall off the map. There were letters from Julia Stanerson in Iowa back to the Illinois cousins in 1922 that made reference to Nels and Mansel, even of Edward Erickson visiting them, but never a clue as to where...until the Soundex for the 1920 Census said that there was a Mansel Thompson in Dodge County, Minnesota. Here are the findings:

1922-Nels’ Brother Torkel Dies

Torkel Thompson, at 83, died from a fall while picking cherries at his home northwest of Morris. His wife, Sisselia "Celia," had died in 1913. Torkel and Celia’s daughter, Annie, Mrs. Tom Peterson, had been living with her father. Tom Peterson had died in 1911.

In a Sep. 1, 1922 letter from Julia, Mrs. Edward Erickson, to Julia Stannerson in Iowa, she tells of Uncle Nels staying a whole year with them, although he lived most of the time with his son, Mansel in Minnesota.

1927-Nels Thompson Dies

It was in a microfiche of Cook County Illinois Deaths 1871-1933 that the death notice (9/21/1927) for Nels Thompson was found. A visit to Ripley Twp of Dodge County found me stopping at a farm to ask about the oldest person who might know anything about the Mansel Thompsons. Their directions led me to a couple who recalled the name from the 1930s, but though they could not help, they did know someone who might. A later letter to Ed and Phyllis Baudoin brought this response: "My husband Ed remembers the family; he remembers threshing for them. They lived about 2 miles from his farm. One of the sons, Roy, worked for Ed for a while, that was probably about 1933. [enclosed] is a picture of Roy taken about that time that you may have." A letter to the Dodge County Historical Society, with the year of death of Nels Thompson’s death, brought me a photocopy of a newsclipping from the Dodge County Star, for Sep. 22, 1927>

Nels Thompson passed away Tuesday afternoon at the home of his son, Mansel Thompson, southwest of Dodge Center. Mr. Thompson was 82 years, 2 months and 27 days old. Funeral services will be held at the M. Thompson home Friday afternoon and the body will be taken to Chicago on the evening train for burial.

As of 1997, the burial site for Nels Thompson remains unknown, as does that of his wife, Mary, who died in October 1888.

1975-Mansel Thompson Dies

A computer search of Social Security records revealed that Mansel died in January 1975 in Chicago, in the Logan Square community. A check with Graceland Cemetery records shows that Mansel’s ashes were strewn. The Social Security records confirmed his birth date as 27 Mar. 1885.

1976-Roy Thompson Dies

Again the Social Security records gave our lead. From his baptismal records at Bethlehem Lutheran in Morris we knew his birth date. That date agreed with the Social Security records which gave his death date as July 1976. Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, noted that Roy was cremated and his ashes strewn by Graceland.

Research Intentions

Knowing that my great-great grandparents, Torkel and Guri [Thompson] had come to America with their two youngest, Nels and Julia, in 1866, I assumed that the parents would have stayed with one of them. My great grandparents, Torkel and Sissilia Thompson had stayed with Weir and Anna Peterson when they came to America in 1870. Tracing Julia’s and Christine’s families did not solve the question of where Torkel and Guri had lived. Finally, because the biography of Nels Thompson in HEI & HGC was the only clue as to when Nel’s parents had died, it was assumed that his parents lived with him. But in that critical period of 1867 to 1911, we know very little of Nels’ whereabouts (other than Mansel’s birth in Lemont, IL in 1885). I suspect that Mansel’s wife, Tillie Osmondson Thompson, may be buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Chicago. But where are Nels and Mary Thompson, and Nel’s parents - Torkel and Guri Torkelson Tungesvik buried?
