MISCELLANEOUS

NATHANIEL DAIL

Prophetstown Echo, June 28, 1922

FIRE DESTROYED HOME TUESDAY OF LAST WEEK

On Tuesday of last week the home of Nat Dail in Portland township was completely destroyed by fire.  Mr. Dail came to this country at the age of seven years with his father, who built the shack on their forty acre farm.  He had made his home there since that time – a period of about 75 years.  The cause of the fire is unknown.  When neighbors arrived on the scene, Mr. Dail was seated outside on a box, holding a pair of shoes and an old but valuable violin that had been in the family for years.  Nothing else was saved from the flames.  A new cottage will be built, and Mr. Dail will live near his niece, Mrs. Wm. Dail.

FIRE ON HARRY EDDY FARM

HOUSE ON EDDY FARM RAZED BY FIRE FRIDAY

Contents Of Two-Story Home Saved – Insurance Covers Loss

Jan 7, 1938

The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Strating, tenants on the Harry Eddy farm, four miles north of Erie, was completely destroyed by fire early Friday afternoon.  All contents of the building a large two-story affair were saved.  Loss on the building was covered by insurance.

The fire evidently started on the outside of the roof from flying chimney sparks.  The occupants were unaware that the house was ablaze until a neighbor, Mr.s Howard Bonnell, turned in the alarm.  The Erie fire department reached the scene in record time but the lack of water nearby caused (illegible) and with the headway that the fire had it was impossible to do more than protect other nearby buildings.  The alarm was sounded at almost exactly 1 o’clock and many people mistook the siren for the regular 1 o’clock signal.

WILL MOVE GARAGE

(undated)

Harry Eddy expects to move the garage this week from the place where his tenant house that burned recently was located to a site near his home in the Albany-Erie Road and will fit it up for the occupancy of the John Strating family until a new tenant house can be built.  Mr. and Mrs. Strating and child have been staying in Erie with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Strating since the fire.

MODERN HOME NORTH OF ERIE

Eight Room Structure Has All Conveniences Of House In Town

Undated

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Eddy have moved into their fine new modern farm home recently completed across the road from their old home three and a half miles northeast of Erie.  The new building is situated on a side hill facing the south and will include every feature of modern home building found in the city or on the farm- modern plumbing, laundry, electricity, sun parlor, oil burning heating plant, air conditioning and built-in garage.  The structure is a story and a half high with ground dimensions of 30 x 36 feet, full basement, eight rooms and two bath rooms.  The rooms on the entire first floor are finished in oak and the upper rooms in yellow pine.

Mr. and Mrs. John Strating, who occupied the tenant house until it was destroyed by fire a few months back will move into the house vacated by the Eddy family.  They have been living in temporary quarters in a garage on the Eddy farm.

RALPH AND ARTHUR JAMES
HARRY EDDY FARM

FARMS 500 ACRES

Undated

Near Erie, or a mile east of that town, we find thee farm, or rather the two farms, operated by Will James, and comprising 500 acres.  The two sons of Mr. James, Ralph and Arthur, operate these places and are making good on them.  A general farming business is conducted.  They milk milking Shorthorns.

Arthur James feeds out about 200 head of hogs each year, with Ralph feeding about 100 head.  Both boys are good farmers and are so recognized.  Dairy products from the Ralph James farms go to stores in Erie.

Harry Eddy farms some 211 acres about three and one-half miles northwest of Erie, on the Albany Road.  Mr. Eddy has recently purchased the farm where has been a tenant for some years.  They not only own this place, but also another farm of 120 acres adjoining them.

The Eddy folks are fine people and specialize in sheet, poultry, dairy cows, and feed out a load or two of cattle every year.

Last year they tried out a pit silo on their place, scooping out a long narrow hole in the ground and covering it with rough lumber the silage kept as good as could be desired.
