| The Parkers John Parker the son of John Parker and Martha (Matty) Jowett was born 1815 in Idle. His father was a woollen cloth manufacturer of Windhill Crag. He married Harriet Mellor and after she died Frances Mellor. Frances seemed to be some relation to Harriet as she lived with them at least from the age of 14. Harriet Mellor the daughter of David Mellor and Mary Wright was christened 31st May 1815 at St Peters, Bradford and married John Parker 27th October 1834 at St Wilfrids, Calverley. Witnesses were George Mellor and Elizabeth Mellor Frances Mellor was born about 1826, we think she is the daughter of Elizabeth Mellor and was christened 29th September 1826 in Bradford. She married John Parker in 1853 at St Wilfrids, Calverley. On the 1841 census Harriet 26 and John 25 and a clothier were living in Windhill with their children David 4 and Martha 1, Harriet's sisters Maria 22 and Lydia 20. Also living with them was Frances Miller 14, A worsted weaver. We believe that it is a misprint for Mellor and she was related, though were are not sure how and is definitely Mellor on the marriage record. By 1851 John 35 now listed as a widower was still living in Windhill with daughter Martha now 11 and two more sons, James 9 and John 5. Frances was now 24 and was Johns housekeeper and she had a son William Mellor aged 2. His daughter Mary born about 1844 is not mentioned. David now 14 and an errand boy was living with his uncle Hugh Parker and his wife Susannah (Goldsborough) in Windhill. John and Frances were married in 1853 at St Wilfrids, Calverley. We think Frances is on IGI as the daughter of Elizabeth Mellor and presume it is the same one who was a witness at Harriet and Johns marriage. Frances's son William Mellor was christened 25th June 1848 at Wesleyan Methodist, Windhill. John and Frances had 2 more children Elizabeth born 1843 and Ann born 1855. On the 1881 census Frances 54 now a widow and her son William Mellor 32 a cloth loom maker (mechanic) both born Windhill were living at 54 High Street, Idle. John and Harriet and some of their children are buried in Charlestown Cemetery and the following is the inscription on the gravestone. Martha Parker was born 22nd August 1840 and christened 19th June 1861 at Wesleyan Methodist, Windhill. In David's will he left his sister Martha Brook of Windhill, wife of blank Brook a bequest and we believe she married Henry Brook in 1871 at St Wilfrids, Calverley. On the 1881 census Henry Brook 35 an Iron moulder born in Mirfield and his wife Martha 41, a laundress were living at 24 High Street, Idle, not far away from Frances. James Parker was born 1841 and went to Australia where he was a shepherd and after only 15 months in Victoria he died on 12th May 1866 aged 24. An inquest was held by the coroner J B Pounds of Sandhurst on 14th May, his verdict was that James died after fracturing his skull after accidentally being thrown from the top of a wagon in High Street. He was buried at Sandhurst Cemetery by Rev. William R Croxton on 14th May 1866. His name is on the family gravestone in Charlestown, Cemetery. Elizabeth Parker was born 10th October 1843 and christened 15th January 1862 at Wesleyan Methodist, Windhill. She was christened on the same day as her brother John.
