Wodehouse Road, Colaba, Mumbai [Bombay] India
The following are transcripts from the plaques that adorn the walls on the inside of this Catholic Cathedral. Its location is behind "Electric House"
A plaque outside the church states:
"Cathedral of the Holy Name. This church of the Holy Name of Jesus was opened for worship on Sunday 15 January 1905. It replaced the old Fort chapel in Medows Street, which was the centre of Catholic life and a parish since 1767. Situated on what was the well known avenue Wodehouse Road ( now N.P. Marg") and running parallel to Colaba Causeway it is popularly call the Wodehouse church. The architect was WALTER ASHRIDGE CHAMBERS of GOSLING, CHAMBERS & FRITCHLEY. Of imposing design the general style is Gothic. The architecture blends well with the surrounding structures of the Majestic Hotel, Prince of Wales Museum, the Maharastra Police headquarters and the Taj Hotel. Its finest external feature is a system of flying buttresses and its pinacles. Internally the solid ground vaulting built of arched work supported by stone ribs is perhaps unique in India. On entering the church the three magnificent stained glass windows from Munich over the high alter pull you spellbound and all the vaulted ceilings are covered with frescos painted by Brother A MOSCHENI S.J. depictin subjects from the Old and New Testaments. On 1 January 1942 the Parish of the Holy Name was by a decree raised to the status of a Pro Cathedral and on 3 March 1964 was elevated as a full fledge cathedral by the sacred congregation of the Propergation of Faith Rome. It was concecrated on 28 November 1964 on the morning of the inception of the 23rd International Eucharistic Congress in Bombay by Bishop Dr REMI JOSEPH DE ROO of Victoria, Canada. This cathedral received the Urban Heritage award in 1998."
