Calvin A. Hutchinson

Calvin A. Hutchinson was possibly born in Ohio [1], in about 1837 or 1836 [2]. On April 30, 1863, Calvin married Anna Isabella McCaddon in Beverly, Washington County, Ohio [3]. Anna was born in Ohio(?) on April 7, 1844 and died in 1919 [4].

Calvin served in the Civil War, enlisting on April 23, 1861 at age 24 [5]. Calvin A. was a Master of Transportation on the Cooper & Bailey Great London Circus in 1876 and when that circus traveled to Australia in late 1877 - 1878 [6]. In 1881, Calvin A. was Master of Transportation for the Robbins & Colvin's Great American and German Allied Shows (circus) [7]. Calvin had fifteen assistants on this circus. On the 1884 Frank A. Robbins circus, the museum superintendent was a Mr. Hutchinson [8], it is not known if this was Calvin or some other Hutchinson.

Calvin's Hutchinson line connects to James A. Bailey (James Anthony McGinnis) through James A.'s wife Ruth Louisa McCaddon. Ruth's sister, Anna Isabella McCaddon, married Calvin A. Hutchinson and had sons Fred Bailey Hutchinson and Charles R. Hutchinson. James A. Bailey also is reported to have had a niece, Mrs. Hutchinson.

Charles R. Hutchinson

Charles R. was born February 9, 1868 at Racine, Indiana (Marion County, near Indianapolis). He died on July 10, 1934 at the home of his son, Charles M. (Buddy) Hutchinson, at Long Island, New York. "Charlie or Hutch" was treasurer with the Forepaugh circus (1892 - 1895) and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. He was treasurer for the Barnum & Bailey circus and the Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey circus for about 35 years. Charles R. Hutchinson line.

Fred Bailey Hutchinson

Fred B. lived in Parkersburg, West Virginia, dates unknown.


1. The only Calvin Hutchinson found in Ohio in the 1850 census index is listed in Xenia Township, Green County. This Calvin is recorded as age 17, born in Ohio, occupation Clerk.

2. Calvin was listed as age 24 when he enlisted in the Union army in 1861.

3. Copy of marriage license, Marriage Record 1859-1865, Washington County, Ohio, p. 63 (#532 in the Marriage Record Certificates Index). Accessed at the Marietta, Washington County, Ohio court house. Calvin is listed as residing in Lowell, Adams Township, Ohio and Anna is listed as residing in Beverly, Ohio on the marriage license (both are in Washington County, Ohio).

4. Letter from Anna's son Charles R. Hutchinson to J. T. McCaddon dated March 27, 1919 regarding the internment of Anna (Princeton University).

5. Civil War record.

6. Route Book, 1876, Cooper, Bailey & Co's. In the McCaddon Manuscript, written by J. T. McCaddon, J. T. states that Calvin was with the circus in Australia.

7. New York Clipper, May 7, 1881, p. 114. This show was organized in Janesville, Wisconsin. The show traveled on a train for twenty-five 50 ft. cars, made expressly for this circus.
