Inherited property on the Fowey in Cornwall and establilshed a Mechanics Institute in Penzance where he gave his first lecture.

Returned to London and worked for a chemical manafacturer. When photography was discovered, he started researching it and published Philosophical Transactions. One of his discoveries was that proto-sulphate of iron could

In 1842, he read a paper before the Cornwall Polytechnic on a 'Peculiar Band of Light Encircling the sun'. In 1843/4 he announced that there are three distinct phenomena in the solar ray: light, heat and photographic power. This photographic power both he and Sir J Herschel agreed to call 'actinism'.
Wrote a Popular Treatise of the Art of Photography (Glasgow 1841, 8 Vols) which passed through 6 editions.

Also distinguished himself by his experiments on electrical phenomena in mineral veins and papers about using steam engines in mines. In 1845, he was appointed keeper of mining records, a position he held for 37 yearsd.

After two years, he succeeded to the chair of Experimental Physics at the School of Mines but resigned this position to devote more time to the Mining Record Office.

Occupied with the Scientific work for the 1851 Exhibition and wrote the synopsis and handbook for this. Was also involved in the 1862 exhibition and in 1884 he received the Diploma of honour for services rendered to the exhibition.
