Sherrill Halsey "Steve" Stevens, who did most of the "grunt work" researching
the genealogy of Hugh Lemmon and his many descendants, died on 4 Aug of this
year from prostate cancer at 76 in The Dalles, Oregon -- just south of his
retirement home in Goldendale, Washington.
--
You'll find a brief bio he wrote several years ago along with an obituary
on his page, just below his name, by clicking the bracketed link [1] -- which
is appropriate, for without his help this site would be considerably smaller
than it is today. Will include a photo on his page shortly, followed by a
Photo Page later.
--
-
While I've not had time to do a complete update and have done selected
individuals from time to time, I hope to do a full-blown update after I begin
traveling later this year -- hopefully early in 2011.

This update contains eight new obituaries, one of which was mistakenly omitted
by the webmaster in the Dec 05 posting; that is, the obit of Matthew McHenry
Lemmon which was purchased via the Rutherford B. Hayes web site (see Resources
Page) by S.H. Stevens has now been posted.
-
The other seven obituaries were either obtained on-line (many newspapers now
have web sites and some have archives for a varying number of years) or
provided by RAOGK volunteers. Special thanks to Kendra Hoffman, the RAOGK
volunteer for Gage County, Nebraska; she provided obits for Lillian May
Turnbull and Ida Jane Catlin, daughters of Jason Eli Lemmon.
-
Special thanks is also due Darrel Roberts, who scanned a great many photos
that he and his sister Michelle had of
their parents and grandparents, Bea Lemmon, Floyd Roberts, and Loyal & Mary
Sallinen Lemmon. While time prevents including them all, you'll note that
there are two new Photo Pages for Floyd Roberts and Mary Sallinen Lemmon. See
the Photo Index and the top of the
Resources Page.
You can look forward to seeing more of the scans Darrel made in future
updates.
Also, thanks to Nancy Carey Kier for providing a photo of her
parents, Jim Carey and Gertrude Anderson Carey, daughter of Blanche Lemmon
Anderson Johnson.

As noted last time, I've added a link on the Resources Page to what is probably the best web site
for locating survivors of decedents, former classmates and teachers, and even
the flaky neighbor who moved out without returning your lawnmower. And best of
all, the site is free! ZabaSearch is better
than Intelius in every respect except one: it does not list
spouses or adult children living at home.

There are eleven new obituaries, eight of which were provided by RAOGK (Random
Acts of Genealogical Kindness) volunteers in several different states. The two
most recent are for the webmaster's late father, Robert Lemmon Sr, and Matthew
McHenry Lemmon, whose obit was purchased via the Rutherford B. Hayes web site
(see Resources Page) by S.H. Stevens.
-
Lori DeWinkler, an RAOGK volunteer in Butler County, Kansas, furnished
obituaries for James Irl Pennington and his wife Zelma Manning Pennington. In
case you had not noticed, there are more Mannings listed than for any other
surname other than Lemmon. And Ann Domjan, a Kansas City, Missouri, volunteer
who has provided obits previously, found one for Charles F. Manning, one of
Zelma's many younger brothers.
-
Cathy Gowdy, who monitors the Marin County, California, RootsWeb board and
does lookups for those posting requests [there has not been a Marin County
RAOGK volunteer for some time], found an obit for Eva Mary Elizabeth Marriner
Paige Lemmon Spade Clark, who may challenge one of Jason Eli's daughters who
was married five times for the longest name.
-
With the exception of an obituary for Ivan McKinley Seal, an uncle of Sue
Hellyer Lemmon who died in Moundsville, West Virginia, the remainder of the
obits were dug up by Mendocino County, California, RAOGK volunteer Barbara
Webster. They cover the family and ancestors of the late husband of Dorothy
Lemmon, Neil Friberg.

Three RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) volunteers provided the
bulk of the 8 new obits in this update -- and two of them provided three
abstracts of death certificates from County Recorder's Offices here in
California.
-
Lynn Kaiser, an RAOGK volunteer in DeKalb County, Indiana, provided three
obits of Hugh Lemmon decendants who passed on in either DeKalb or Steuben
Counties. [For those who have not checked Mapquest for Angola, IN, lately,
DeKalb County is immediately south of Steuben County, a focal or staging point
of many of our L-Clan descendants during their migration west.]
--
Lynn, who squeezes in some lookups while working as a librarian, furnished
scans of obits for Riley Avery Lemmon, Sr., Elsie Lemmon Huffman, and Esther
Lemmon Sanders, all longtime Steuben County residents.
-
Tom Greer, an RAOGK volunteer in Kitsap County, Washington provided obituaries
for Marietha Irene Lemmon Walden and her husband Vinton Walden while two
volunteers here in California, Barbara Webster in Mendocino County and Bernie
Glienke in Santa Clara County , provided obits, death certificate abstracts,
or both. And your webmaster made his annual trip to the combined San Jose
City/San Jose State University Library [aka MLK Branch Library] to so some
lookups for others as well as for this project. An obituary for the mother of
Sue Hellyer Lemmon was located.

Jessica Collins Leon made contact with us and provided some information on her
branch of the Lemmon Clan. She is a descendant of Electa Jane Lemmon. Not only
did she provide a Gedcom file, but she also provided two photos, which are
described on the Resources Page.
-
She alerted us to an article on her grandfather, Robert R. Rierson, on the
occasion of his retirement from the Postal Services after 30 years of walking
routes in Bronson, Michigan, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Mark Manning, an RAOGK
volunteer in Maricopa County, AZ, provided not only the retirement article but
Robert's obituary as well.
-
Laurie Cotulla, an RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) volunteer in
San Joaquin County, Calif., provided yet another obituary, this time for Fred
Beardsley Lemmon, who died in Stockton in 1972. Two other obituaries, for
LuAnn Lemmon Reade and Lucie Lemmon Wilcoxson, were located on-line.

HELP! As you will see on the
Resources Page the Social Security Death Index
(aka, the SSDI) has been stuck on 31 Jan 2004 for its end of data for over a
year now. I suspect that budget problems mean that the SSDI will not be
updated any time soon. If you are aware of Hugh Lemmon descendants, their
spouses, offspring, etc. who have died since 31 Jan 04, please let us know the
name, POD, and DOD of the decedent.
--
11 April 2005:
Thanks to Cheryl Arver I discovered that the SSDI has been recently updated
and is now current through 28 Feb 05. [Here's a quick method for
determining the end date of the SSDI updates. Do an Advanced Search for John
Smith with a year of death of 2005; then try months following Feb; there'll be
several John Smiths who died in any given month.]

The deaths of Evelyn Lemmon Colberg, oldest offspring of Loyal Lemmon and Mary
Jane Sallinen, and the husband of the youngest, Dorothy, of the same family,
resulted in two new Photo Pages as well as two new obituaries.
-
Laurie Cotulla, an RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) volunteer in
San Joaquin County, Calif., provided obituaries for Louise Conklin Lemmon
Drace and Julian R. Colberg.
-
As you will see on the Resources Page there are
two new Photo Pages, each consisting of three photos, with this

Some new projects prevented the webmaster from combining the Genlinks.Txt
file into the Resource Page. But some helpful new links will eventually
force him to make the long-planned revision. (Since he's not an ice fisherman,
he can no longer claim he's too busy making fishing trips!)
September 2004

Thanks to the work of two researchers with an interest in the Lemmon Clan
there are five new obituaries in this update.
-
Joyce Crowl, after a trip to the Angola, IN, library, provided an obituary for
Lenora Tuttle Lemmon, wife of David Riley Lemmon. Assuming the obituary in the
card file at the library was correct, note that Lenora's name end with an "a"
rather than an "e." Also, she was born at Pleasant Lake in 1840 rather than in
Ohio in 1838.
-
Even more interesting is the fact that Lenora's father was named Lemmon
Tuttle, and Joyce also provided the obit for him from the Angola Library card
file. (Guess with a father named Lemmon, Lenora was destined to marry a
Lemmon.)
-
Gerry Mack, who formerly lived in Fort Bragg, CA, but who has moved inland to
the warmer climes of Willits, furnished obituaries for the parents of Lillian
Ikola Lemmon, Emil and Emma Ikola, as well as an obituary for Lee Channel,
late father-in-law of Dorothy Lemmon Friberg's youngest daughter, Cindy
Friberg.
-
As you will see on the Resources Page there is
one new photos with this update. See the
Photo Index for a list of those for whom one or

Too many fishing trips prevented the webmaster from combining the Genlinks.Txt

There are eight new obituaries again this month thanks to efforts by RAOGK
(Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) volunteers and an alert librarian in
Ohio, one of the key states during the westward movement of Hugh Lemmon's
descendants.
-
An additional obituary for Richard G. Lemmon was located (perhaps on-line on
the advice of a LaPlata County RAOGK volunteer) and added to his text file.
Humboldt County, California, RAOGK volunteer Steve Fox provided obituaries for
husband and wife Carl B. Ortner and Ruth Lemmon Ortner. And Jane DiGirolamo
provided links to a web site for the Salinas Californian, where an
obituary of her husband's father, Tony DiGirolamo, appeared shortly after his
death on 24 June.
-
But sometimes a mistake can be a good thing. An alert librarian in Powhatan
Point, Ohio noticed that his grandfather, Allan D. Ramsey, was listed on this
web site as the husband of Eleanor Odessa Keyes. But he knew your webmaster
had the wrong person, for the correct person was Allan G. Ramsay. The name of
the librarian? Alan Ramsey.
-
He furnished half of the obits in this update -- those for Eleanor Keyes
Ramsay, Allan G. Ramsay, Iola Keyes Moore, and Reece "Alex" Moore.
[Incidentally, he passed on a local joke: those living in Powhatan Point who
spell their names Ramsey were democrats while those who spell their names
Ramsay were Republicans. :-)]

In addition to eight new obituaries this month some "cool effects" have been
added for those using Internet Explorer. See
Form below.
--
Since we have been having difficulties tracking down the descendants of
Chaplin H. "Chapp" Lemmon, the obituary for his son Rex Lemmon provided by Ann
Schmidt of Hillsdale County, Michigan, was quite useful. The RAOGK volunteer
for Steuben County, Indiana, Lillian Zinnecker Stoner, secured an obit for
Evelyn "Eva" Lemmon Riblett Keyes, who died in 1945. Several other RAOGK
volunteers did lookups and found obits for Edith Dudley Manning, widow of
Loyal Manning, Dr. Roger Carey, grandson of Blanche Lemmon Anderson Johnson,
George C. Ernst, son-in-law of "Mertie" Lemmon Hempstead, William Everett
Grinnell, son of Beatrice Lemmon Grinnell Taylor, and John W. Ortner, brother-
in-law of Ruth Lemmon Ortner. Finally, the ever-reliable Gerry Mack sent an
abstract of an obituary that originally appeared in a February 1944 issue of
the Fort Bragg Advocate of Warren Harold Lemmon, who died during his
Senior year at Fort Bragg High School.
-
Because some of the obituaries arrived only yesterday (and more are on the
way), there should be some new descendants in the next update. If you're
interested in genealogy and are not using RAOGK volunteers, you're
working with one hand tied behind your back. You'll receive a response in most
cases much sooner than if you make a post to a RootsWeb board requesting a
lookup.
-
As you will see on the Resources Page there are
no new photos with this update. See the
Photo Index for a list of those for whom one or
more photos have previously been posted.

When you click a link using Internet Explorer you'll see the new page appear

There are four new obituaries this month, with one provided of Reba Lemmon
Crowl by Joyce Crowl just last month. The other three are for Richard G.
Lemmon, grandson of Arthur Earle Lemmon, Pauline Lemmon Schrader, daughter of
Chaplin H. Lemmon, and Howard J. Harbaugh, son of Erdeen Lemmon Harbaugh.
-
The RAOGK volunteer for Steuben County, IN, indicated that after approximately
1950 the locals wanted a daily paper. (The Angola Steuben County
Republican is published weekly.) Hence, she suggested that one check for
obits in the Fort Wayne newspaper(s) as well after the deaths of relatives in
Steuben County.
-
Note also that there is more information on the descendants of Sherman
Beardsley "Boyd" Lemmon -- and they're not gin or gun runners!
-
As you will see on the Resources Page there are
two new photos, both parts of new Photo Pages. Thanks to Toby & Sue Lemmon for
providing the new "old" photos. See the Photo
Index for more information as well as links to all of the photos or
Photo Pages.

As opposed to the last update, there are 16 new obituaries or funeral
notices in this update, most of which were provided by RAOGK (Random Acts of
Genealogical Kindness) volunteers. The new text material, which one can reach
by clicking the link or number in brackets just below a descendent's or
spouse's name, are for the following: Raymond M. Thorpe, Angletta May, Ora
Dowell, Ruth Ruby Lemmon, Statira Brown, Truman Beecher, Una Lemmon, Riley
Avery Lemmon Jr, Louis D. Lemmon, Ethel C. Dirram, Klink Lemmon, Glen
Birdsall, Oliver H. Birdsall, Martin Stoddard, and Chaplin "Chapp" Lemmon.
-
A special thanks to Sybil Herring, former RAOGK volunteer in Steuben County,
Indiana. Because health problems now require a helper to get to the Angola
Library, she deserves our thanks for her assistance in transcribing five of
the obits on cards in a card file there.
--
The funeral notice for "Chapp" Lemmon from Tampa was just that -- a notice as
to when the funeral was to occur but no list of survivors. Hence, we're
looking for someone who lives in or near Steuben County who can search for an
obit of Chapp -- especially now that we have a nearly exacty DOD (Date of
Death). What little we have on his particular branch is from his son Klink's
obit from the Tampa Tribune.
-
As indicated on the Resources Page there are
three new photos, principally of Evelyn Lemmon, the Colbergs, and the
Andersons, all of Fort Bragg in Mendocino County, California. See the Photo Index for more information as well as links to
all of the photos or Photo Pages.
-
On the Resources Page Karen Bogart, Ruth Guins, Gerry Mack, and Chuck Manning
are listed with addresses of Unknown. While I should be able to
locate Gerry Mack, who has provided more obits than anyone else, perhaps the
rest of you know something of the whereabouts of the other three.
-
The GENLINKS.TXT file has been revised. The LDS Family Search link is now to
their main Search Engine or page. After seaching the SSDI and any state-
specific death records, the World Connect search engine and the Family Search
site are usually worth checking next.

There is one new obituary this month -- for Lawrence C. Crowl, husband of Reba
Lemmon. And it was provided by the Steuben County, Indiana, RAOGK volunteer,
Lillian Zinnacker Stoner. As most of you know, next to Sandusky County, Ohio,
Steuben County in the NE corner of the Hoosier state was the launching pad for
many Hugh Lemmon descendants. Hopefully Lillian will have time to do more
digging in the files at the Angola library so that we'll be able to read obits
not only for those named Lemmon, but also for those who married Steuben County
Lemmons; eg., those with names such as Fee, Crowl, Menges, Woolf, etc.
-
Further, sometimes an obituary for someone born in Steuben County who died in
a large city elsewhere might be easier to obtain from the home county
newspapers rather than from those of the large city.
-
Since I did not have many new photos with which to work for this update, I
concentrated on improving the Photo Pages (see Form below). The new Photo
Pages can accomodate an unlimited number of photos. If you're tired of seeing
photos mainly from Sherrill & Bob, help broaden the coverage by sharing some
of your line's family photos.

The following are L-Clan researchers listed on
the Resource Page with addresses of Unknown: Karen Bogart, Ruth
Guins, and Chuck Manning. Hopefully the three have not "cashed in." Joyce
Crowl's address has been corrected.

There are seven new obituaries and a wedding announcement in this update --
and they were all provided by the distaff side. [C'mon, guys; surely you can
dig up a few family obits too; otherwise, your better half may soon start
flexing her biceps and start calling you a genealogical whimp!]
-
The obituaries for Ira J. Lemmon and Pearl Warren Lemmon as well as the
wedding announcement for their son Mac were provided by Southern Oregon
researcher Diane Evans. She says that the University of Oregon Library, which
is open to the public, has microfilm of virtually every paper in the state.
You'll find some links to it in the GenLinks.Txt file on the
Resources Page.
-
Sybil Herring, RAOGK volunteer for Steuben County, Indiana, provided the obit
for Richard Weir Lemmon, who, though he died one county to the east in Ohio,
was born in Steuben County. Sybil says that there are a passel of Lemmon obits
and such in the Angola Library; hopefully we can have her procure some of them
for us while she's still able.
-
Old standby Gerry Mack, who seems to have every obit from Mendocino County,
California thanks to her 8 or 9 volumne set of births, deaths, etc. on the
Mendocino Coast, supplied obituaries for Blanche Lemmon Anderson Johnson, her
two husbands, Edward Christian Anderson and Fred Johnson, and one of her
daughters, Charlotte Anderson Snow.

The following are L-Clan researchers listed on
the Resource Page with addresses of Unknown: Karen Bogart, Ruth

An obituary for Cornelia Brooks Lemmon Rose received two days ago from Sybil
Herring, RAOGK volunteer for Steuben County, provides two heretofore unknown
Lemmons: Elnora Lemmon and Mary L. Lemmon, both daughters from
Cornelia's first marriage to Maurice Adhill Lemmon. Upon further online
searching, however, the two were know to some LDS Church members since they
had uploaded their birth and death dates in an Ancestral File.
-
Indeed, where a Lemmon or Lemmon descendant has become a member of the Mormon
Church, one can usually find data on ancestors in that particular branch of
our tree which currently starts with Hugh Lemmon. In fact, several branches
that have Mormon members now have "fleshed-out" pedigree charts because of the
data found on the LDS Family Search site. (You'll find a new link to it on the
Resources Page.)
-
The other new obituaries are for Blanche Beatrice "Bea" Lemmon Roberts
Sullivan, who died last month and whose obituary was furnished by sister
Eleanor Lemmon Dahl Holberg, and several Colbergs, two of whom married Lemmon
descendants in the Fort Bragg, CA, area. Finally, a quasi-obituary for Ruth
Anderson Colberg was created from information provided by her son Douglas
Colberg. (Hopefully Doug will also be furnishing some photos for the August
update.)
-
The two new photo pages are for the aforementioned Bea Lemmon Sullivan and for
Sherman Beardsley "Boyd" Lemmon, uncle of S.H. Stevens. While some might call
Boyd a black sheep, he certainly did many different things in
his 73 years. For the August Update you can expect an expanded text file
outlining some of those accomplishments as well as some of his indiscretions.
The new photo pages are followed by a "**" in the
Photo Index. If you have some photos of Hugh
Lemmon descendants or their spouses that you'd like to contribute, please let
us know via e-mail or letter.
-
While Joyce Crowl has resurfaced, there are still several who
have changed e-mail addresses and no longer receive notices of each update. If
you know the present addresses of any of those in the table of researchers on
the Resource Page whose addresses are Unknown, please
clue us in!

If you check out the new obituaries (eg., Cornelia Brooks, Bea Lemmon, and/or
Ruth Anderson), you'll see improved text files with paragraph indentations.
(The webmaster discovered how to improve the formatting while working on
another genealogy project. Hopefully the forced line feed every 256 characters
can be eliminated also.)
--
Over time all of the text files will be
converted to the format used in the new obits.
-
The other change is that the marquee still starts with Hugh Lemmon, but then
continues with eight different descendants each update. And, before those of
you who are NOW member complain that we're not including any female Lemmon,
note that the eight names are evenly balanced with four males and four
females.

This update contains six new obituaries, one less than ten days old, as well
as three new photo pages. The photo pages were created from photos
provided by one of Chryl Arver's cousins who wishes to remain anonymous
because of the flaming e-mail she received from someone connected with
her job.
-
Two of the new obituaries are for Clifford Anderson and Florence Snow
Anderson, son and daughter-in-law of Blanche Lemmon Anderson Johnson. They
were provide by long-time Mendocino County resident Gerry Mack. The obituary
for Cecil J. Lemmon, grandson of Chester Err Lemmon and son of Richard Weir
Lemmon, was provided by Martin Murdock, a first cousin. And, other than an
obit for Earl Gunter dug up by the webmaster, the remaining two obituaries for
Etta Cattell Rierson, great granddaughter of Electa Lemmon Houston, and her
husband Fred Rierson were furnished by the aforementioned anonymous source.
-
You'll find the three new photo pages followed by a "**" in the
Photo Index. They are for Etta Cattell Rierson,
her brother, Russell W. Cattell, and her husband, Fred Rierson. While it's
somewhat easier to obtain obituraries these days using the RAOGK (Random Acts
of Genealogical Kindness) volunteers, we prefer that the photos on the web
site not be dominated by our close relatives. If you have some photos of Hugh
Lemmon descendants or their spouses that you'd like to contribute, please let
us know via e-mail or letter.
-
This Update is somewhat smaller or shorter than previous ones because
the webmaster has been working on a web site looking at the teachers and staff
of his high school at the time of his graduation many moons ago. I'm sure
you've often wondered, "What ever happened to old so-and-so?" No, not
that old so-and-so who made me run laps, but rather the high school
teachers whose names I can't remember because I was never in one of their
classes. Whether you still live near where you graduated from high school,
attended a large or small high school, or was a student of a school that is
now closed, there are many former classmates, teachers, staff members,
and their descendants who would not only enjoy reading obituaries of
those faculty and staff members no longer giving out large, circled red F's,
but their ancestry as well, especially of those who taught you more than to be
in class on time.
-
Finally, several of those who have changed e-mail addresses no longer receive
notice of each update. If you know the e-mail addresses of any of those in the
table of researchers on the Resource Page whose addresses are
Unknown, please clue us in!

Some minor changes were made to the Photo Pages to improve the displays. While
the Text Pages have not yet been reformatted so that the date and day of the

Also, starting with the next update, the names in the
Marquee will be changed with each update so that there will be eight different
Hugh Lemmon descendants' names scrolling on the Home Page with each Update.

The major contributer to this month's update was Gloria Call Chenault,
daughter of Shirley B. Call and Iszora Lemmon and granddaughter of Chester Err
Lemmon and [Velma] Edna Muser. In searching for the families of the many
spouses of Hugh Lemmon descendants the webmaster found a World Connect site
put up by Gloria -- and her W/C site helped in the ongoing campaign to include
the parents and brothers and sisters of as many descendants as possible.
-
If you're working on the genealogy of another family, consider exporting a
Gedcom that deletes all but the names of the living. When you make a post to
World Connect, you have the option of leaving the names of the living intact
or replacing them with "Living Smith," "Living Jones," etc. But the big
advantage to posting your Gedcoms on W/C is that other distant relatives of
whom you're unaware may now be searching (or in the future may search) for
connections between their ancestors and yours. [End of unpaid
testimonial for posting Gedcoms to World Connect!]
-
In addition to correcting some of the errors in our data on the descendants of
Err Lemmon, providing exact dates where we had none, and sending obituaries
of her grandparents, Gloria also provided two photos which are the basis for
this month's new photos. A family photo of Err and Edna Lemmon's family was
cropped to provide most of the photos in this month's update; see the
Resource Page and
Photo Index.
-
Three other new obituaries that appear this month are of Claud Elliott Lemmon,
his wife Vernoica "Billie" Eaves, and their daughter Roberta Lemmon Gaethle.
Claud almost certainly qualifies as the most western of the Lemmon Clan
since he learned to ride as a teenager and spent most of his adult working on
his and other ranches in Montana. His obituary was provided by Great Falls,
MT, RAOGK volunteer Kathrine Jenkins. (If you've not had much success in
requesting lookups on the RootsWeb county boards, try using an RAOGK
volunteer; see the link in GENLINKS.TXT.]
-
An obituary for Harvey Burton Lemmon was furnished by yet another helpful
RAOGK volunteer in Branch County, MI, and an additional obituary for Beecher
B. Lemmon was supplied by still another RAOGK volunteer. [Beecher vies with
the two Uriahs (Lemmon and Thorpe) for having the most euphonious given name
among the many Hugh Lemmon descendants.]
-
Finally, the last new obituary is for Andrew Colombi, son of Steven Colombi
and Arlene Lemmon. While one expects to see obituaries for L-Clan descendants
who are older than 70, it's painful to see one for someone only 19 years old
-- and even more so for members of the immediate family. Andrew's father
described the circumstances of his son Andrew's early death in a recent e-mail
to the webmaster; that is included below the article and obituary from the
Fort Bragg Observer.
-
The campaign to include the parents and brothers & sisters of the spouses
of any Hugh Lemmon descendant continues. If you see that we do not have those
family members listed and you have information that will help us, please send
us either e-mail or a letter.

No changes for the February 2003 update; however, the Text Pages will be
reformatted so that the date and day of the week of any obituary is
posted at the top of same. Also, in keeping with standard genealogical
practice, the surnames at the top of the Text Pages will be capitalized.

In a word: Obituaries. In three words: Many new
obituaries. And by new we mean new to us -- not obituaries of Hugh Lemmon
descendants who expired in the last few months. While photos give you an image
to connect with a name, an obituary fleshes out the mental picture of a
person, especially if that recounting of a life comes from a small-town
newspaper.

Electa Jane Lemmon is again in the picture -- this time because two of her
descendants (or spouses thereof) have provided either obituaries or data on
heretofore unnamed descendants. The latter wishes to remain anonymous, in
large part because she became the target of some flames when her e-mail address became known. But she
provided a great many new descendants (easily 100+) of Electa Jane's. Though
not all of them appear on the web pages for various reasons, when the
webmaster created the GEDCOM from which the web pages were created, there were
1572 individuals; the Persons Index on October's Update shows 1437.
-
Another source of obituaries (and new descendants named in those obituaries)
was Cheryl "Busy Beaver" Arver, who finished a
family history of her mother's family just in time to send us a passel of
obituaries, some of which we had requested early in December from volunteers
on various RootsWeb County boards who do lookups. (Cheryl and her unnamed
cousin each deserve an extra cookie for dessert -- at least, until their
husbands start making comments about their weights!)
-
A third source of obituaries of Hugh Lemmon descendants was provided by Nick
Melhinch after Dick & Dona Lemmon sent a copy of one of his World Connect
pages showing Charles Harvey Lemmon's wife's name as Bessie J. rather than
Rebecca Jane. Three obituaries, included on her web page, show that "Bessie"
was an unexpected nickname for Rebecca; thus, her name is now listed as
Rebecca Jane "Bessie" Nehrhood. [Thanks, Dick & Dona, for bringing this
question as well as Nick's World Connect site to our attention.]
-
If you download GENLINKS.TXT, renaming it to GENLINKS.HTM in the process,
you'll have a web page of useful links -- and you'll find links to both Nick
Melhinch's World Connect site and another site he calls Nick's Nook.
Also included is a link to the Cleveland Public Library's Necrology File; it
contains 21 obituaries of Lemmons, many of whom are from Charles H. Lemmon's
family.
-
One of last two sources of obituaries was mentioned above: RootsWeb County
boards. While there are many volunteers helping out on most of the county
boards (the webmaster does lookups in Santa Cruz County, Calif.), some of the
smaller counties (particularly where the weather is a bit adverse this time of
year) do not appear to have someone who regularly does lookups.
If you make a post to a RootsWeb County board and receive no response within
two to three weeks, consider what may be a better alternative: RAOGK, an
acronym for Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness. A link to to its County
Volunteer listing is included in GENLINKS.TXT. However, some (smaller)
counties (eg., Steuben County, Indiana) do not currently have a listed
volunteer.
Some public libraries (eg., the Steuben County Library in Angola, Ind.) will
do lookups for a small copying & mailing fee. Others (eg., the Corpus Christi
Library in Nueces County, Texas) do not charge but do suggest a donation to
the program that provides genealogical information. Your best bets are to
check a library's web site (see Libdex in GENLINKS.TXT), send them e-mail or
a letter asking if they do lookups, &/or phone them with your questions.
-
No new Photo Pages with this update, but there is a photo of Clifford Earl
"Tip" Lemmon, on his web page. We hope to have some new Photo Pages for the
February 2003 update.
Also plan to begin including the parents and brothers & sisters of the spouses
of any Hugh Lemmon descendant. If you see that we do not have those family
members listed and you have information that will help us, please send us
either e-mail or a letter.

Four new photo pages have been added for Clifford Anderson, Electa Jane Lemmon
Houston, Cyrus Adhill Lemmon, and Uriah Blake Thorpe. Clifford Anderson was
the oldest offspring of Blanche Lemmon Anderson and taught music in Fort
Bragg, Calistoga, and Monterey, Calif., before retiring to the Mendocino coast
where he was born.
-
Electa Jane Lemmon's photos are a study in contrast. In her wedding photo she
looks even younger than her nineteen years. In the second photo with her two
surviving middle-aged daughters, Ina and Ida, she stikes a rather defiant
pose--as if to say, "Tell me something I haven't already learned." While she
did smoke a pipe for a while, she gave it up, telling one of her daughters that
didn't think it was "lady-like." (At least she didn't chew Beechnut--and I
don't mean the gum!)
-
Cyrus Adhill Lemmon, a Civil War vetetan, went west to seek his fortune. While
he apparently found little gold in Colorado, he did help populate the west
with many of his descendants, some of whom moved further west to California or
Oregon.
-
Uriah Blake Thorpe helps perpetuate one of the more notable names in the
Lemmon Clan. And for those of you old enought to remember what television sets
looked like in the early 1950s, check out the set in the background of the
second photo. A wide screen in those days was often no more than twelve inches
diagonally.
-
Finally, a fourth photo has been added to Loyal Lemmon Sr's Photo Page just to
show what he looked like when he still had most of his hair.

August 2002

This August 2002 update was delayed in part to include some photos the
webmaster first saw in Mar 01. While attending a reunion of the descendants of
Loyal Lemmon in Fort Bragg, CA, on the weekend of 24/25 August I came
prepared. I installed the scanner software on my brother's old Acer computer,
and loaded it along with a scanner, keyboard, monitor, mouse, & assorted
cables into the car for the trip. (The used Thinkpad laptop I had intended to
use is now being repaired or replaced by the seller.)
-
Of the 21 photos scanned on 24-25 August, two were of George Thomas Lemmon,
who left the Mid-West (Nebraska) in 1883 and headed west, perhaps along the
Santa Fe trail. After spending some time in Los Angeles he slowly moved
northward, with stays in Tulare, where daughter Blanche was born, San Miquel,
where son Loyal was born, Santa Cruz, San Jose, where son George C. was born
and daughter Gratia Mae was married, and Santa Rosa before arriving in the
Fort Bragg area in 1898.
-
The two photos of George Thomas Lemmon were provided by granddaughter Eleanor
J. Lemmon Holberg. One was taken sometime before wife Angeline Richards died in
1915; it's clear she was fond of flowers, as one can see in the photo of the
two of them. George, however, may have been more interested in things he could
eat, for the other photo is of him standing next to a peach tree he planted on
his place just north of the Noyo River. Eleanor also provided a photo of her
father Loyal taken when he was in his early 20s.
-
Another George is the subject of the fourth new photo: George Harmer Lemmon.
After his father was killed [or murdered -- see the June 2001 below], George
apparently moved with his mother Eva Page Lemmon to California, eventually
settling in what is now known as Silicon Valley (the Santa Clara Valley). The
photo provided by Eva's granddaughter Jan Anderson is some sort of gag shot
taken at a "for sale" sign, perhaps for property in the Golden State.

Because GED2HTML, the program the webmaster uses to create the web pages you
see of various Hugh Lemmon descendants, essentially limits the user to only
one photo per individual, photo pages have been created for four descendants:
Uriah Blake Lemmon, William Sherman Lemmon, George Thomas Lemmon, and Loyal
Albert Lemmon. You'll find them marked with an asterisk in the
Photo Index.
-
The October update should see more Photo Pages, especially for individuals for
whom we have two or more photos--assuming the webmaster spends more time
working on them rather than fishing in the Sierras.
-
Hereafter all new photos in a given update will be marked with "**", making it
easier to see "What's New."

Obituaries often provide some of the best clues about our ancestors. The
webmaster spend three hours Saturday at the San Jose State library viewing
microfilm of San Jose's main newspaper from the late 1800s to the 1960s. The
purpose of the search was to find obituaries of an almost-forgotten branch of
the Lemmon Clan.
-
After ariving in Southern California in 1883 George Thomas Lemmon gradually
worked his way northward from Los Angeles to Tulare County, then westward to
the southern end of the Salinas Valley, to Santa Cruz, San Jose, Santa Rosa,
and finally to the Fort Bragg area of Mendocino County in 1898. The oldest
daughter of George Thomas and Angeline Richards, Gratia Mae Lemmon, remained
in San Jose, where she married a native of Missouri, Thomas Gunter, in 1897.
-
But Thomas Gunter died in 1914 when he was only 39 years old leaving five
children and even more brothers and sisters. Gratia Mae or Grace died three
years later when her youngest was only 11 years old. While it's not known who
helped raise their children, Thomas Gunter's obituary as well as those of two
of his sons did provide the heretofore unknow name of the only surviving
daugher. For more information, check out the individual web pages of Thomas
Gunter and/or Gratia Mae Lemmon.

As mentioned two months ago, some changes are underfoot regarding the use of
photos on this web site. Because the use of "(p)" in the World Connect Gedcom
file is likely a mystery to others, the first step in eliminating those three
characters have been taken by the creation of a Photo
Index.
-
While time constraints may preclude including photos previously shown at the
bottom of an individuals web page for this update, work is underway to create
a separate page of photos for those individuals where many photos exist.

Bill Grinnell of Seattle has helped increase the number of Lemmon descendants
by providing information of the descendants of Beatrice Lemmon, his
grandmother. Additonally, he sent us the URL of a cousin who has photos of
Beatrice and her parents on his web site. (For more info, see the
Resources Page.)
-
Cheryl Arver, in response to a question from Jan Anderson regarding her
grandmother's reference to an Aunt Caroline in a diary, provided information
from the 1850 Census of Branch County, Michigan, that confirms the Aunt
Caroline in question was not Jason Eli Lemmon's first wife but was rather a
sister of his mother, Rosetta Babcock. Rosetta's parents as well as brothers
and sisters have been added to the Hugh Lemmon data base.
-
Finally, Cheryl helped resolve a cross-link in which her father-in-law had two
sets of parents: his brother and his parents. She also offered more DOB, POB,
DOD, and POD for some of the Arvers. [She sets a fine example for those
descendants who see only the names of their ancestors -- and nothing else!]

While there are no changes in this April 2002 update, the webmaster is
examining a method by which the limit of two photos per individual can be
exceeded -- perhaps by creating a separate photo page for those Lemmon
descendants where more than two photos exist.

Theresa Ferguson has again provided us with another obituary clipped by a
great aunt from newspapers in Steuben County, Indiana. This update's obituary
is of [David] Riley Lemmon; and it in part lends ammunition to one side in a
running gun battle between Hugh Lemmon descendants.
-
That is, is Riley's father Maurice or Morris Lemmon? Until a death
certificate, a cemetary record, or a birth certificate provides more evidence,
we shall assume that the reporter who compiled the obituary had not first been
to the local pub or tavern and, therefore, copied the names as given to him by
a family member correctly.
-
Several new photos were again provided by S.H. Stevens, principally of his two
uncles, Sherman "Boyd" Lemmon and Fred B. Lemmon, his aunt, Vivian Lemmon, and
his mother, Hazel Marguerite Lemmon. Two of his aunts and uncles offer a study
in contrasts. Vivian followed in the footsteps of her father, William Sherman
Lemmon, and became a missionary. Boyd, however, chose a rather active life on
the high seas. While he was not a pirate, his short text file indicates that
he did some things of which his father might not have approved. But we
know that all reverends' sons are paragons of moral rectitude.
-
Two slides taken by the webmaster at a Lemmon Clan Reunion in 1976 were
cropped to provide views of the husbands of the two oldest daughters of Loyal
Lemmon, one of George Thomas Lemmon's sons.
-
If you're holding back photos of Hugh Lemmon descendants, please help us
increase the number photos on the web site. While some may claim they're tired
of seeing Lemmons with their big noses and big ears, remind them that those
appendages are not merely ornamental. If you have a photo, scan and e-mail it
to us, copy it at Kinko's and mail the copy to us, or, if it's a particularly
good photo, and you can afford it, have Kinko's copy it onto glossy photo-type
paper.

The biggest event since the October update was e-mail from a distant cousin of
Chaplin H. Lemmon's wife, whom we had listed as Hattie M Gramling. Theresa
Ferguson sent us an obituary for Mary Hattie Geamling. We were close -- but
close only counts in grenades and horseshoes, not in genealogy.
-
Theresa indicated that she has a shoe box of clippings collected by a great
aunt. Though she's stationed in Hawaii, she says she's willing to share what
her great aunt accumulated over the years -- music to any genealogist's ears!
-
A new photo was provided by S.H. Stevens of his grandfather William Sherman
Lemmon. That photo, which was cropped from a photo of eight of William H
Lemmon's nine children, is now at the top of Wm S Lemmon's web page and the
photo of Reverend Lemmon and his wife formerly at the top of the page now
follows the text portion of the web page. And all but one of William Henry
Lemmon's children now have photos at the tops of their respective pages.
-
Similarly, the webmaster has dredged up an old photo of his grandfather, Loyal
Lemmon Sr, and placed that at the bottom of his page. And R.A.J. Thorpe's web
site provided a second photo for the page of Uriah Blake Thorpe and his wife
Hetty. The plan is to include more photos from early in a descendant's life at
the top of a page and, where available, one from late in his or her life at
the end of any text material.
-
Because the photos at the bottom of an individual's page must be hand-coded,
there are only three with this update. As time permits the webmaster will
add others where he has more than one photo. If you're holding back back
because the web site already has one of a particular descendant, don't be
bashful. Scan and e-mail it to us, copy it at Kinko's and mail the copy to us,
or, if it's a particularly good photo, have Kinko's copy it onto glossy
photo-type paper if Santa gave you gold instead of a bundle of sticks.
-
Other changes, corrections, or additions included entering the death and
burial dates and places into the data portions of the pages where it was given
in the text files for descendants of William Monroe Thorpe and Sarah Annett
Lemmon. Finally, the parents and brothers and sisters of Eli Lemmon's wife,
Jane Morrill, were added.

Because the webmaster broke his left wrist while backpacking near
Florence Lake, CA, on the South Fork of the San Joaquin
River on 16 Sep and his father underwent triple bypass on 26 Sep, this
bimonthly update will be somewhat smaller than normal.
-
Two different photos were used of Cyrus Adhill Lemmon as well as William
Sherman Lemmon and his wife Anna Ione Beardsley; they show each of the
subjects at a later age than the previously-used photos. The photos were
provided by a well-know source; see the table of contributors
on the Resources Page.

whose e-mail address is on the home page.

Whether you are interested in military history or not, the text files
accompanying Martha McHenry's father and brothers make interesting reading.
And if you have a specific interest in the French-Indian wars that preceded the

different life would be today if your neighbor wanted your
scalp.

Evelyn Lemmon Williams, granddaughter of Clarence L. Lemmon, pointed out that
Clarence had a younger brother named J.D. Lemmon, who, after Clarence's death

While the entire web site is new, some recent entries have been made just this
month. There had previously been no information on Clarence L Lemmon, Edward
Orlando Lemmon's only son and one of Eli Lemmon's many grandsons.
-
He had moved from the Tri-State area of Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan where he
and many other descendants of Hugh Lemmon were born to Fillmore County in the
southeastern corner of Nebraska. There he met and married an English woman
named Eva Page.

But he met an untimely death. Was it suicide or murder? Read
the text file on his web page and decide for yourself.
