[7] HAZEL MARGUERITE LEMMON
Hazel Marguerite Lemmon was born in Hampton, Iowa in 1904. Her obituary
outlines her life.
.............................................................................
OBITUARY
Tacoma News Tribune & Centralia Daily Chronicle (1973)
--
MRS LILBURN H. STEVENS
Hazel Marguerite Stevens was taken by the Lord at 11:10 PM, the 11th of
January, 1973 after suffering a stroke at her home on the same day. She had
been active and in good health. Mrs Stevens was born in Hampton, Iowa on the
12th of May, 1904. Her parents were the Reverend William S. Lemmon and Anna
I. Beardsley Lemmon. Mr Lemmon was a protestant minister and Marguerite's
younger years were spent primarily assisting her father and mother in their
religious pursuits. In 1907, the family moved to Spokane, Washington and
after 1912 moved to Hoquium where she attended from High School. Thereafter,
the family resided in Centralia, Chico, Napa and Porterville, California. It
was in the latter city that she met Lilburn H. Stevens and they were joined in
marriage on August 10, 1923.
She and her husband moved to Centralia in February, 1924 where Mr. Stevens
became a well known businessman. They jointly owned and operated the Singer
sewing Center in that city. In addition, Mr. Stevens was an officer in the
local National Guard unit and commanded an armored battalion in Europe during
World War II. In 1949, Lilburn Stevens was appointed the Adjutant General of
the State of Washington and the family moved to their new residence at Camp
Murray, near Fort Lewis, Washington where they resided until 1958. During
that period, Mrs Stevens was involved in various church activities and owned
her own children's wear retail store on 6th Avenue in Tacoma. In 1958,
General Stevens retired and both went into the real estate business. They
moved to Wenatchee in 1959 where Mrs Stevens was active in church and
community affairs and her husband was employed by the County of Chelan.
After their second retirement in 1969, Mrs Stevens and her husband toured
the United States and thereafter made their retirement home in Port
Townsend, Washington in April, 1971. Mrs Stevens was a member of Eastern
Star, the First Christian Church of Centralia and a regular member of the
Church of Christ in Port Townsend. She participated continuously in the
affairs ofthis church and on the last day of her life taught a bible class to
the ladies of the Church, and so she was with God and her family uppermost in
her mind that she passed without suffering from this world into a far better
place.
She leaves behind innumerable friends, her husband and three children and
nine grand-children. Daughter Nina M. George of Thorp, Washington, son Kerry
N. Stevens of Riverside, California and son Sherrill H. Stevens of Puyallup,
Washington. She is also survived by her brother Sherman B. Lemmon of
Cumberland Beach, Ontario, Canada and a sister, Vivian Lemmon who is a
protestant missionary in Japan. Another brother, Fred B. Lemmon of Stockton,
California had passed away in December, 1972.
While her children realize that they have lost their best earthly friend,
they knew her faith in God and know that all is well.
She was a friend to everybody and loved nothing better than to do deeds of
love and kindness for those in need. Those who knew her best, loved her most.
[As of April 1995, Vivian, Hazel (Marguerite), Fred and Sherman B. (Boyd)
Lemmon have all passed away. (author)]
