..............................................................................
FROM THE HISTORY OF SANDUSKY COUNTY OHIO (Page 709)
James Lemmon, the founder of the family in Townsend Township, came here from
Livingston County, (formerly Genesee County) New York, in 1827. It is said of
him as typical of his strength, courage and perseverance, that he walked the
whole distance to Columbus, in order to enter his selected tract of eighty
acres, and provided for his subsistance with his gun, being somewhat noted as
a hunter. The land which James Lemmon secured is partly located on the North
Ridge and partly in the marsh. It is supposed that the place at one time was
the site of an Indian village or graveyard, but if so, the fact antedated the
knowledge of the indians who yet lived in the county when the whites came
here. When the Lake Erie & Western Railroad was built was built through
Sandusky County, the Lemmons sold a tract from the north end of the farm for a
gravel pit. In excavating this pit numerous bones and skulls, together with
stone utensils and tools, were found, at a depth of from two to three feet.
This discovery which aroused much interest among local scientists, is
elsewhere referred to in this volume.
James was a veteran of the War of 1812. He was a member of Captain William
Bacon's company of Infantry which was from Livingston County, New York. He
served in Western New York.
At the time of his death, James owned 200 acres and was counted one of the
leading men of the township. James Lemmon Sr. was born in Northumberland
County, Pennsylvania, July 17, 1779. He married Rebecca Blake, a native of
Connecticut, in 1805. He settled on the North Ridge in Townsend, where he
died May 7, 1854. His wife died March 29, 1855. The family consisted of 5
sons and two daughters.
His son, Matthew M. was born in Livingston County, New York in 1812. He
came to Sandusky County with the family in 1827, and still resides on the
farm on which his father settled.
Matthew married Sarah McIntyre in 1848 and has a family of four children -
Frank married Hannah Kellor, and lives on the homestead; Harvey married Bessie
Nearkoop, and Lives in Townsend; Etta, wife of Luther Wilt, resides in
Townsend. George is unmarried.
