Death of Matthew M. Lemmon, of Townsend
One more of the very old settlers of Sandusky county passed to his rest on Friday night of last week, shortly before the hour of midnight, in the decease of Matthew McHenry Lemmon, of Townsend. Mr. Lemmon was taken ill on the
Sunday previous, on arriving at his home after attendance at church and Sunday school services; he gradually grew worse as the week advanced, though most of the time able to move about the house. At four o'clock in the afternoon of the day he died, he
walked from his bed to a chair. Rheumatism of the heart is believed to have been the immediate cause of death. He had been more or less of an invalid for a time, but was wonderfully well preserved for one of his years.
Matthew M. Lemmon was born November 23, 1812, at Livonia, Livingston county, N.Y.; his parents were James and Rebecca Lemmon. His father having enlisted in the forces called out to fight the second war with England, was not at
home at the birth of his son. Matthew had four brothers, all now dead, -- the late James Lemmon and the late Uriah B. Lemmon, of Clyde, having been two of them. Their only sister survives all the brothers.
In the spring of 1826 [or 1827] Matthew was brought to Ohio by his parents, with the rest of the family. His father purchased a farm on North Ridge, and settled there. In time Matthew became owner of this farm, which has been
his home, as boy and man, for a period of more than sixty-two years. In fact, his entire lifetime after coming to Ohio was spent there. And we may be assured that he did his part in clearing up the wild lands and endured his share of privations
incident to those early days.
December 30, 1847, being then a trifle past thirty-five, Matthew was married, Miss Sarah L. McIntyre becoming his wife. They continued to reside on the family homestead, where five children were born to them. One of these died
young; the other four, three sons and a daughter, are living. Rev. Chas. H. Lemmon is a United Brethrn minister, resident of Fostoria; Frank C. lives at the family homestead, and George, the younger son, still unmarried, has his home with Frank. The
daughter is Mrs. Ella Wilt, wife of Luther Wilt, also living in Townsend. Ten grandchildren complete the family circle of survivors.
The funeral of Mr. Lemmon occurred Sunday, December 2d. Rev. J.T.N. Braithwaite conducted appropriate services at North Ridge church, which could not contain all the people in attendance. "Uncle Major," as Mr. Lemmon was
generally known among his acquaintances, was a man who commanded the respect and esteem of all. He was a true type of the early settlers of nearly every farming community -- honest in dealings, faithful to obligations, kindly in disposition, indulgent
though strict in the bringing up of his children, observing a regard to his neighbors' good equally with his own. Having lived to the ripe age of seventy-six, he was permitted to die without undergoing the pains of a lingering illness, as had been his
Interment of the remains was made in the family lot in the Tew cemetery, Townsend.
