[Remembrance]
Mary Cordelia Wilcoxson SHACKELFORD
--
Wednesday 9 December 2009 Santa Cruz Sentinel, p. A-13
--
A resident of Santa Cruz since 1946, Mary C. Lemmon, 91, succumbed to
complications related to advanced dementia on Dec 2 in the home where she had
lived since Nov 1954.
The first child of David Wilcoxson and Cordelia Shackelford Wilcoxson, Mary
was born on May 15, 1918 in Stockton. She grew up in Tuolumne, though for a
time she lived in one of the West Side Lumber Company camps where her father
operated a donkey engine. Later the family moved back to Tuolumne where her
father eventually ran the stock room for West Side.
Her main interests in school were music and art. Her Senior Class Prophecy
in her yearbook saw her as an art and English teacher at Half Moon Bay High
School. She spurned an offer to live with a great aunt in Stockton and major in
music at College of the Pacific. Instead, she attended San Jose State College
and majored in art.
While living at the YWCA in San Jose she ignored the admonitions of the
ladies who ran the "Y" and often ate with a bus-boy and fellow student from
Fort Bragg who had curly, black hair. During the Thanksgiving vacation they
eloped via train to Reno, where Mary married Bob Lemmon on Nov 25, 1938.
The birth of a son in 1940 forced Mary to quit college six months short of
her BA in Art. The family moved to Sonora when her husband was hired as a
teacher/principal at Shaws Flat Elementary. Three more children followed and a
fifth was on the way soon after her husband returned from a brief stint in the
U.S. Navy at the end of WWII.
After a brief stay during late 1945 with her husband's parents in Fort
Bragg, in 1946 Mary and family moved to Santa Cruz, where husband Bob had
accepted a position as a State Farm Insurance agent.
Mary's first house was a small one-room affair in the Beach Flats area; her
four small children slept in a fold-down Murphy bed. With the birth of a fifth
child imminent in May 1946, the family moved to California St. a half a block
from the high school.
When the five children were older and bigger, the two-bedroom house seemed a
bit crowded -- especially the bathroom. In Nov 1954 Mary and family moved to a
house near her husband's State Farm office; she lived the remainder of her
life in that home.
Though Mary did work in her husband's insurance office as an unpaid
secretary for 19 years, a number she never forgot until the onset of
Alzheimer's, she was principally a homemaker. As such she did a lot of sewing
not only of clothes for her daughters to wear but also to create dolls for
them; she also crocheted. She learned to upholster furniture, paint walls, ceiling,
chairs, etc., and still have dinner ready for the family of seven in the evenings.
She was a member of several organizations associated with those to which her
husband belonged such as the Opti-Mrs, the American Legion [Women's]
Auxiliary, and the Jayceettes, serving as a chaperon for several Miss
California Pageants. In later life she also belonged to the Christian Women's
Association; in connection with the latter, she often supported several young
students in foreign countries.
Mary continued playing the piano until her homemaking chores limited her
time; she did play at several State Farm parties, returning home more than
once to gather up some of her sheet music. And her two daughters both went on
to become music or piano teachers. She also liked to dance. And if husband Bob
was not around she sometimes danced with her late brother, who used to like to
twirl her until she got dizzy; she told him more than once, "Don't you dare
let go of me when the music stops."
The family would like to thank Hospice of Santa Cruz County for its
assistance as well as the excellent care-givers of Florence Kuo: Aimee Day,
Malerma Casana, Paulina Ramones, and Lorelie Lugtu as well as others who
stayed with Mary while Bob Jr made fishing trips to the Sierras.
Mary is survived by Bob Lemmon Jr of Santa Cruz, Jane (Phil) DiGirolamo of
Salinas, David (Louise) Lemmon of Santa Cruz, Eloise Lemmon of Portola,
daughter-in-law Cynthia Kaarsberg Lemmon of Scotts Valley; 8 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Eleanor Lemmon Holberg and Lillian Ikola
Lemmon, both of Fort Bragg, and Sue Hellyer Lemmon of Vallejo; and brother-
in-law Loyal "Jasper" Lemmon of Fort Bragg. She was preceded in death by her
brother David Wilcoxson Jr, PhD in Feb 1968, her husband of 67 years, Bob
Lemmon, in Nov 2005 and son Warren Lemmon in Oct 2008.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday Dec 12 at Benito & Azzaro's Pacific
Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz followed by a private burial at
Santa Cruz Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers contributions in Mary's name to one
or more of the following: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, 940 Disk Drive, Scotts
Valley CA 96066; the Salvation Army, 721 Laurel St, Santa Cruz CA 95060;
and/or the American Red Cross, 2960 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz CA 95062.
