Announcement of Marriage in The Democrat, dated 31 August 1898
--
Yesterday at high noon, at the residence of the groom's pareents in North
Durango, Rev. C.H. Miller pronounced the words that united Miss Pearl Warren
and Mr. Ira Lemmon in the holy bonds of matrimony.
The ceremony was witnessed by the immediate friends and relatives only of
the contracting parties. The bride was a picture of lovelinesss, dressed in a
[part of article was destroyed] Mack Warren.......and Miss May Lemmon, as
bridesmaid. After congratulations the assembled company sat down to an elegant
dinner. Later the couple drove to Trimble Springs and today continue the
bridal journey "around the circle."
Upon their return they will take up their residence in La Plata City where
Mr. Lemmon is engaged in mining.
The bride was the recipient of many costly and handsome presents, tokens of
the respect and admiration she has gained in her brief residence in Durango
and La Plata.
The Democrat joins the numerous other friends of the happy couple in wishing
them bon voyage.
............................................................................
Ira and Pearl lived at mines in and around Durango, Colorado. They came
West along with Ira's sister May. Pearl's brother Mack and some other folks
came on October 14, 1899 heading to Alaska to find gold. When they reached
Baker, they heard that there was a gold strike at Sumpter, Oregon, so they
went there. They lived in mining camps at Geiser, Greenhorn, Bonanza, Sumpter
and Susanville. Ira prospected in various places, mostly in the Greenhorn
Mountains. Ira eventually settled on a claim on Granite Boulder Creek on the
middle fork of the John Day River and stayed there until his death. The mine
never paid out. The place became the family's summer home until their son
Wendell was in High School.
